To think dogs are not the same as human children?

I've seen this both on here and IRL, and I have to say it really pisses me off. This isn't just with dogs, I've seen people compare their guinea pig to their child once, saying they couldn't choose between them if they could only save one from a fireHmm but mostly people do this with dogs.

Most of the time when people say this it's a discussion about how they can't believe someone would rehome a dog because they can't cope, they wouldn't rehome a child would they so how is it different, yadda yadda. I don't agree with rehoming a dog without trying your absolute hardest to fix any problems first but ffs a dog is not the same as a human child! I'd hope that a parent would put the needs of their child over the needs of their dog if it came down to it..(doesn't seem so for the guinea pig coupleConfused)

AIBU to think it's ridiculous to say a dog is the same as a human child??

Yes, there are situations that means a dog needs to be rehomed when a child comes along - EXTREME situations such as aggression but not simply because there is a little bit less time for the dog, you make time for family just as you have for the child.

I did say that I don't agree with rehoming unless they've already tried their hardest..

SardineQueenII I'm sure most of us would have done the same but not sure how it's relevant to this thread unless it was a toss up to save the child or your pet from walking under a bus? As for the second scenario, not sure many pets look scarily at a man and need to be rescued.

Mamaisamermaid · 03/03/2019 20:41

@SherlockSays

Babies are time and energy consuming, just like dogs are.
If parents are having a hard time providing time, and/or energy and/or money for both the baby and the dog, I find it reasonable to rehome the dog.

Human babies should take priority over dogs, as (most) humans grow into much more intelligent beings than dogs will ever, therefore making such a decision to rehome the dog worth it.

Dogs don't need to do something like cause aggression towards someone, for the owners of said dog to have a valid reason to re-home the dog. Lifestyles change, and dogs might not be practical anymore for some people.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 03/03/2019 20:46

dogs are throwaway items.Mana So sad people have this attitude. It stinks.

SardineQueenII · 03/03/2019 20:49

"Human babies should take priority over dogs, as (most) humans grow into much more intelligent beings than dogs will ever"

This is very very dodgy and has been used as an excuse for atrocities against animals and against other groups of people, since forever.

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 03/03/2019 20:49

This thread just proves why dogs are better than people

I was going to write a post about who I would prioritise rescuing in a fire and then though fuck it. Enough of this utter madness. And then saw this post that sums up everything.

SardineQueenII · 03/03/2019 20:51

You'd prioritise the dog?
As they are better than people?
or have I misunderstood.

If that's the way you feel that's your perogative.

The intelligence thing is gross though.

Myownname · 03/03/2019 20:54

A friend of mine had 10 failed ivf cycles and never did have a child. Her dogs are her children in so many ways that I’d never be hurtful and say they can’t be as good as real children, for her. I’m lucky enough to have children and dogs, I see what you mean, they’re not the same for me, but I expect for others they are.

Mamaisamermaid · 03/03/2019 20:57

Humans are inventing extravagantly useful things in short periods of time. Humans deserve priority over dogs as they're WAY more likely to save the world than dogs. are Do you guys really think that a dog can do the same? I'd rather support a human, than a dog that does f*ck in comparison to a human.

Mamaisamermaid · 03/03/2019 20:58

didn't mean to write are and meant to say fck all*

SardineQueenII · 03/03/2019 20:58

Mama humans aren't saving the world we're destroying it.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 03/03/2019 21:01

You are joking Mama? The world would be a better place if humans didn’t exist on it.

Mamaisamermaid · 03/03/2019 21:01

Yes, but it's far more likely for a human to invent things to stop world destruction in the near future, as inventions are happening at a rapid pace due to human intelligence increasing significantly, all of which a dog is incapable of.

SardineQueenII · 03/03/2019 21:01

Dogs are what we made them, we have selectively bred them.

And in this country we killed off teh wolves they came from.

Humans have bred dogs so extremely that they have all manner of medical issues.

I see this as cruel.

As a species, it still makes no sense though and is totally counter-intuitive and counter to society to prioritise animals over children though.

I suppose though in the context of our aggressive destruction of the planet - the land the seas the animals - it follows that we also lose emapthy for others of our own species.

SardineQueenII · 03/03/2019 21:02

"human intelligence increasing significantly"

evidence for this one please.

LuvSmallDogs · 03/03/2019 21:03

Yeah, those types are annoying, just let it wash over you though as they’re usually compensating for something in their lives.

Costacoffeeplease · 03/03/2019 21:03

I’ll post on the thread if I want to, thanks all the same

Have you rung the nspcc yet?

SardineQueenII · 03/03/2019 21:04

You're talking rubbish mama, rubbish that has been used by others to prop up all sorts of grotesque activity including genocide.

I would still rescue the neighbours children before my pet though.

While we're here, it seems only right to try to ease the suffering of others. Even if most of it is caused by other humans in the first place.

bobstersmum · 03/03/2019 21:06

Adore my dog, would walk through fire to save him, but i love my children far more!

Mamaisamermaid · 03/03/2019 21:08

@SardineQueenII

Take a look at all the inventions made by humans over the course of human existence.

teteaclaque · 03/03/2019 21:09

It baffles me when people write a post in answer to an OP asking why do they care or shouldn’t they have more important things to think about. Have you read Mumsnet much?

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 03/03/2019 21:10

But so what? All humans have done is to invent things to further their greedy destruction. And design inventive ways to torture and kill each other. Sorry but I’m a bit negative about the human race just now.

Mamaisamermaid · 03/03/2019 21:10

@sardineQueenII

now look at everything a dog has ever invented over the course of their existence and let's see whether or not said dogs intelligence levels have increased as rapidly and as intelligently as humans have. I think I've given enough evidence.

SardineQueenII · 03/03/2019 21:10

You're seriously arguing that humans have had an overall beneficial impact on this planet Grin

Okaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Waiting for the evidence that human intelligence is "increasing significantly".

By the way with dogs, sheep, cows, we have bred them to be what they want to be. In many cases, docile and not wily. So, we bred intelligence out in a lot of cases. And you use the result to explain why animals are inferior. That is some fucked up logic!!!

Your arguments are drivel.

Prequelle · 03/03/2019 21:11

This new diversion is always something that interests me. I'm sure I read some theory that humans wouldn't be where we are today if it wasn't for the help of canines.
