I don't give 2 shiney shits about the Oscars, who wins, what they wear. It's just not something I've ever had an interest in.

Having said that I saw Olivia Coleman won best Lead Actress and watched the accompanying video.

I'm so pleased for her. It obviously means a lot to her and she is one of Britain's greatest actresses who has really done a great slog to get where she is and I've enjoyed so many of her shows and films.

Congratulations Olivia.

OC is phenomenal!
Sooo delighted she won!

WhiteDust · 26/02/2019 07:20

She really is great in everything she does & I thought I really like/d her but her acceptance speeches are bloody irritating to watch.

ShatnersWig · 26/02/2019 07:57

Melissa was robbed.

What I really don't understand is how Bohemian Rhapsody was up for best film. It's really not that good.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 26/02/2019 09:59

I think she's a good actress but I read a comment btl in the Guardian esterday which sums her up for me:

"I'm just a plucky little Brit who should really be at home listening to radio 4 and having a nice cup of tea"

So is that an insult? Or...? I can't tell?

Tinkobell · 26/02/2019 10:25

Love her...so versatile and can’t be type-cast. But I just hope we don’t get Colman overdosed that would be shame. The bbc in particular tend to do star of the moment overload, then you’re sick of them. I used to like Judy Dench and Helen mirren but now I don’t; only for the publicity overkill!

GreigLaidlawsbarofsoap · 26/02/2019 10:39

@BlueJeansNiceTop

The point is not that, but that they can't really have been on their bare bones as reported, if less than 12 months later they were able to buy a property in London!

One massive pay cheque from a very good role? ? ? That's all it would need.

Know someone years ago, very skint actor, landed a part in a long running popular series, earned over £250k in one year.

It's completely possible!

dustarr73 · 26/02/2019 10:52

Loved her in Hot Fuzz. She is a great actress

GreigLaidlawsbarofsoap · 26/02/2019 10:57

@Whisky2014 big fuss here in U.K. over Olivia, in the US it was much more for Glenn so yes I think she was genuinely surprised.

Whisky2014 · 26/02/2019 11:39

Mmm I understand but I'm still sceptical. Either way, if i was up for this nomination I'd have practised a speech. Unless that was her practised bumbling fool speech...she did a good job if that's the case.

WhiteDust · 26/02/2019 11:50

The 'look at little old me' persona is irritating. 'Unrelenting, self-deprecating comments feel like a fishing expedition for compliments. '

Apparently it's known as fake humility. false self-deprecation or humble bragging.

We know she's bloody good, the people voting for her to win the awards know she's good, the directors, writers and producers giving her job after job know she's good.
I'm sure she doesn't want people to think she's up herself and is over compensating with the humble 'little old me' act. She knows.

southeastdweller · 26/02/2019 12:07

So depressing, the nastiness

Alternatively one could say that people are expressing different opinions to the OP, which is the way internet forums go. I think you're being oversensitive.

Nope, that's pretty clearly nastiness, and your attempt to turn it into a personal attack on me isn't going to work either.

You quoted my post. Are you replying to someone else? Who turned what into a personal attack? I have directed nothing towards you.

MilkGoatee · 26/02/2019 12:35

I just watched the speech, and I didn't think it was (as) cringy (as I thought it would be). So all good.

I did come away with the impression she's genuine - when she was getting up from her seat, she was standing slightly with her back to the camera and was mouthing "What am I going to do???". You may be a good actor and improviser, but I reckon it's a high moment of stress unless you're super controlled, that's a moment to be caught off guard.

I think all nominees are very much conscious of the fact they cameras are on them when the winner is called and they don't want to look sour or spiteful if they've lost out. Melissa McCarthy was caught ot somewhat, but don't know whether that was positive or negative, I think she was actually looking at Glenn Close (think they were near eachother).

ssd · 26/02/2019 12:45

I thought Glenn Close looked pretty gutted which must be par for the course at these things and it's all on camera
What I don't get is awards for someone just doing their job?? Most of them are very well paid why all the fawning and awards, you never see postmen awards it joiners or air stewards awards

Or is the film industry just mightily up its own arse?

LaurieMarlow · 26/02/2019 13:01

That’s not true, most industries have awards. It’s just that no one else cares and they don’t get televised. Grin

LaurieMarlow · 26/02/2019 13:06

It’s tough to win against someone like Glenn Close who is being ‘shunned’ for whatever reason.

I’m sure Colman thought Close was a shoe-in. However she can’t control the circs of her win and it’s the type of performance that ticks the academy’s boxes, so it’s not a big surprise in retrospect.

dustarr73 · 26/02/2019 13:34

I can see Glenn getting an Oscar within the next few years.Theres only so many times they will shun them.Look at Leo.He won a few years ago and it wasnt his best film

Kennehora
Apologies for causing confusion. But not apologies for calling out nastiness for what it is.

False humility is a real character trait and enacted by many.
I'm sorry if you think my opinion is just plain nasty. Read my other posts. She is a brilliant actress in everything she does. Her oscar speech was contrived IMHO.
