To be so happy for Olivia Coleman?

I don't give 2 shiney shits about the Oscars, who wins, what they wear. It's just not something I've ever had an interest in.

Having said that I saw Olivia Coleman won best Lead Actress and watched the accompanying video.

I'm so pleased for her. It obviously means a lot to her and she is one of Britain's greatest actresses who has really done a great slog to get where she is and I've enjoyed so many of her shows and films.

Congratulations Olivia.

Have you read the thread? There are people on here who actually know her and have said that is what she is like all the time and how she was at school too.

I love how people just ‘know’ stuff about people they’ve never met. Hmm

See also Meghan Markle.

It always comes across as jealous and bitter.

BeatriceBee · 26/02/2019 18:10

Her speech made me feel like crying and I am not normally easily reduced to tears. So pleased for her, she was obviously overwhelmed and didn't expect to win. I have always thought of her as 'one of us' and hope she remains so, I feel sure she will. Well done Olivia!

mommybunny · 26/02/2019 18:29

Olivia Colman’s acting is clearly of a calibre that it was always a matter of when, not if, she would get an Oscar. She was criminally underused in Les Miserables but still managed to make the most of it / her delivery of the line “oh my darling Gavroche, to think you were almost left behind” spoke volumes of her desperation and exasperation at the same time. Brilliant. I can’t wait to see The Crown!

I rarely go to the cinema and hers is the only performance I’ve seen this year and it was definitely Oscar worthy. I must also admit I have never been a huge Glenn Close fan so I’m not heartbroken she didn’t win. She always comes across to me as Acting and it irritates me. I only recall seeing her in Fatal Attraction and The Big Chill and she didn’t move me terribly.

I will say, however, that I far preferred Glenn Close’s dress to Olivia Colman’s.

"...Or is the film industry just mightily up its own arse ?"
Hmm
Eh Yes !

Bowchicawowow · 26/02/2019 19:34

The Oscars are fun. They are great for UK films because they get great publicity.

cauliflowersqueeze · 26/02/2019 19:37

I think she’s amazing. I’m also slightly obsessed with her in that I find myself absolutely riveted to the screen when she’s on. I don’t know what it is. She’s not beautiful but she’s stunning. Her voice isn’t gorgeous but it stands out in an attractive way. Her smile isn’t Colgate but it’s so warm and genuine. She’s got so much charisma on screen. I’d love to know her.

Lottapianos · 26/02/2019 20:32

'She’s not beautiful but she’s stunning.'

She really is stunning, her whole face lights up when she smiles

YouTheCat · 26/02/2019 20:35

That's exactly what I was going to say.

Raffles1981 · 26/02/2019 20:46

I watched her speech a couple of times. I am so, so happy for her. She may have been over the top but I think she genuinely believed this was her one chance. Emma Stone's face throughout, it was just pure and lovely. And so pleased for Rami Malek as well.

Genuine50 · 26/02/2019 21:09

I like Olivia but having seen both films think Glen Close should have got it. Melissa McCarthy was excellent too. The pretentious American Oscar judges always equate an English accent with a thespian to be put on a pedestal. Judi Dench was a mediocre British actress appearing in sitcoms for years before the USA ‘discovered’ and lauded her and now she’s a dame! I’m over the moon for Rami Malek though - his performance was mesmerising.

WhoGivesADamnForAFlakeyBandit · 26/02/2019 21:11

Have any of you listened to David Tennant''s podcast with her? She sounds sooo nice in it. She talks about not wanting to be, or be seen as, the twat on set, so being as nice as possible. And she's nervous, even with DT and her dog there.

derxa · 26/02/2019 21:17

Genuine I don't like lovies as a rule but Judi Dench is an acclaimed Shakespearian actress. I loved her in Philomena. I cried buckets,

StarbucksSmarterSister · 26/02/2019 22:17

Genuine50 Judi Dench was a noted Shakespearean actress long before making any TV sitcoms, mediocre or otherwise. I have no idea when America "discovered her" , since she was already very famous here.

GoFiguire · 26/02/2019 22:19

You are genuinely thick to say that about Judi Dench.

Alice913 · 26/02/2019 22:23

Her genuine surprise at how highly she is regarded is refreshing. There is so much ego around these days. She comes across as someone I’d be friends with. I was really happy for her.

Alsohuman · 26/02/2019 22:26

It takes a fine level of ignorance to say something like that about Judi Dench.

Clawdy · 26/02/2019 22:33

Genuine50 will get a shock if she googles Judi Dench.

I was pleased for her as I think she's great.

But her acceptance speech got on my tits. Too ditsy and fey.

LiveThisLife · 26/02/2019 22:46

I love Olivia Colman, and thought she was fantastic in the night manager. Loving her pixie hair cut.

The Judy sends xomment being discovered by America? Huh?

Pishogue · 26/02/2019 22:49

It’s perfectly possible to be in A Fine Affair and The Duchess of Malfi, Genuine.

Febuarystar · 26/02/2019 22:51

Muffinmad it was a channel 4 programme called run.

Embarrassingstoryteller · 26/02/2019 22:57

I absolutely loved her speech. When she said "all you little girls watching at home, practicing your speeches...well it can happen!" it really resonated as she isn't a typical movie star type.

Reese Witherspoon said something similar in her Oscar speech a few years ago, and it came across as much less genuine as she looked so polished and ambitious in comparison.

What is the Bechdel test??
