To be so happy for Olivia Coleman?

I don't give 2 shiney shits about the Oscars, who wins, what they wear. It's just not something I've ever had an interest in.

Having said that I saw Olivia Coleman won best Lead Actress and watched the accompanying video.

I'm so pleased for her. It obviously means a lot to her and she is one of Britain's greatest actresses who has really done a great slog to get where she is and I've enjoyed so many of her shows and films.

Congratulations Olivia.

The Bechdal test is where two female characters have a conversation about something other than a man.

Are you her agent? Friend? Lover? DM journalist?
There is nothing 'nasty' in saying (multiple times) that she is absolutely brilliant in everything she does. I and others (RTFT) found her acceptance speech contrived.
That is all. It is an opinion. Not a fact. Maybe pick some of their opinions out to get het up about.
I'm sorry I have offended the fans of Britain's newest national treasure.
If the OP wanted a one sided thread she/he should have called it 'The OC appreciation club,'

Just think, without Judi Dench we would never have had Elaine Paige.

All together now, “Midnight....” 🎵

In Les Mis I thought Olivia Colemans character was hamming it up in front of the authorities re Gavroche as she and her partner really didn't want to bring him with them as he was just another mouth to feed.

Judi Dench - brilliant in Philomena.
She was Cordelia many moons ago in King Lear in Stratford upon Avon.

beanaseireann · 27/02/2019 07:30

Oops Regan in King Lear.

*Shakespearean

Did anyone see the above? Hilarious anecdotes from Judi Dench, Eileen Atkins, Joan Plowright and Maggie Smith
Bowchicawowow · 27/02/2019 09:14

Why do people have to tear down people in the public eye? The woman has just won an Oscar. As such by definition she is a brilliant actress. I can’t understand the horrible comments about her.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 27/02/2019 09:25

Yes. She didn't like Gavroche (says something about how she's never been able to take to him) and was deliberately trying to leave both him and the dog behind .

ralfeesmum · 27/02/2019 11:23

Wonderful for her. Queen Anne had a disastrously sad personal life - all those pregnancies and in the end no survivors, and Olivia put it all across very realistically.

Janecon · 27/02/2019 11:37

I wasn't that keen on her in The Favourite and she's not my favourite actress. But am I happy for her? Yes, of course. It's an amazing achievement and she must feel very proud indeed. Good for her, and I hope it's the first of many.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 27/02/2019 13:58

I will say, however, that I far preferred Glenn Close’s dress to Olivia Colman’s.

Agree mommybunny - and also about Glenn Close herself. I've said upthread that I think she's over-rated and I stick with it.

I think her dress was amazing, though - looked fabulous - looked the dress of a woman who was confidently expecting to be awarded and Oscar; the dress of a woman who thought the world's eyes would be upon her, and the world's press clicking away at her acceptance speech.

I felt a bit sorry for her.

Olivia's dress was lovely, but not in the same league by a mile - not the dress of someone who had taken triumph for granted, but of someone who was ready if the trumpet-call came, but not overly confident of success in that glittering world of bright whiney people.

jarhead123 · 27/02/2019 14:00

Thrilled too! She is so likeable

SchadenfreudePersonified · 27/02/2019 14:02

It’s perfectly possible to be in A Fine Affair and The Duchess of Malfi, Genuine.

Indeed, Pishogue -totally agree - it's what's called "versatility"

Our Jude is no one-trick pony!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 27/02/2019 14:04

deliberately trying to leave both him and the dog behind

Leave the dog behind?!

Victor Hugo! I will never trust you again!!!

VanillaSugarr · 27/02/2019 14:11

It was A Fine Romance.

beanaseireann · 27/02/2019 15:14

I was Shock that Olivia's dress was Prada.
Somebody up thread said it looked like they decided it was too plain so swiped the bow off a chair that was set up for a wedding. Grin
In fairly recent photos OC (2016 ish) has her hair long. I think it suits her.
I love when an "unluvvie" wins.

Another privately educated cleaner here 😁

mommybunny · 01/03/2019 16:37

Just to be clear, I totally understood Mme Thenardier’s real reaction to “darling Gavroche’s” return just in time for the carriage to leave! That’s what was so brilliant about Olivia Colman’s delivery.
