To think baths are completely overrated

Mmmmbrekkie · 23/02/2019 16:03

Single parent and my children are with their father this weekend.

I’ve worked flat out all day on laundry, chores, admin. Thought I’d have a bath as a treat. Usually I love a long scalding shower. However I’ve got a bad back and thought that soaking in a bath with my book would be perfect.

Wrong.

I’d forgotten I don’t enjoy baths!
It’s lovely and warm for first five mins but I can’t stand the temperature gradually dropping. And so begins cycle of release of water, top up with hot water. Repeat. Repeat. But never really warm enough, or nor beyond a few minutes.

So many, especially women, love.

What am I missing?!

Not keen on baths, always made me feel a bit insecure rather than relaxed and when I heard Pauline Quirke's account of getting stuck in the bath in a hotel, it's been showers all the way ever since. Dodgy back and living alone, the thought of being unable to lift myself out of bath whilst my starving dog starts nibbling my cold wet toes as the days pass . . . Not appealing at all.

LaurieMarlow · 24/02/2019 10:38

*Stewing in your own filth basically.•

What a truly stupid thing to say.

However the Japanese point is a good one. I don’t understand why we don’t see more Japanese loos over here. They are mind blowing.

greenelephantscarf · 24/02/2019 10:40

how do you not 'stew in your own filth' if you don't rinse off with clean water after a bath? Confused

whatwouldyoubelikeat28 · 24/02/2019 10:41

I'm off to have one right now, so good! OP, YABVVVVU

LaurieMarlow · 24/02/2019 10:42

A) Soap/shower gel/sponges etc remove dirt. That’s their job.

B) People who bathe/shower daily do not accumulate filth.

HTH

PineapplePower · 24/02/2019 10:47

Unless you clean the bathtub and shower yourself beforehand, then yes, I do think it’s gross. Sorry if my opinion offends you.

Every time I’ve taken a Western-style bath, I see specks floating around and it’s just unsettling.

I’m not offended, I just think your opinion is idiotic.

I’m off for a lovely soak now. Wink

mydogisthebest · 24/02/2019 11:09

If you get cold getting out of a shower how does the same not apply getting out of a bath?

I also agree that baths, lie ins and breakfast in bed are overrated. Don't do or like any of them

woollyheart · 24/02/2019 11:15

Strange, I rarely see flecks floating around my bath....

If I spent the day working down a filthy coal mine or trudging knee deep through sewers, I would not take a bath and wallow in the muck.

I'm not usually filthy when I take a bath. It is for relaxation. If I am grubby I take a shower.

Do people who think baths are all disgusting never go into a swimming pool?

Loyaultemelie · 24/02/2019 11:19

I love baths it's my only me time. I subscribe to the waterproof e-reader, chocolate the kids don't know about and bliss. I have a broken knee at the moment and really miss a bath

PineapplePower · 24/02/2019 11:43

Soap/shower gel/sponges etc remove dirt. That’s their job

And where does all that go? Perhaps ... into the bathwater?

Do people who think baths are all disgusting never go into a swimming pool

I can handle it, as I shower afterward Wink

Alsohuman · 24/02/2019 11:48

Got out of a lovely hot bath half an hour ago and i’m still glowing, i’d be shivering after a shower. And i’m squeaky clean, you could eat your dinner off me!

DustyMaiden · 24/02/2019 11:50

I love my large bath, Netflix on the iPad. Don’t go in for candles.

happymummy12345 · 24/02/2019 11:51

I agree, I hate them. I haven't had a bath since January 2011, when I was nearly 18. That was only because I had chickenpox so couldn't shower (lovely cold bath in January, just what you want to have to do).
I highly doubt I'll ever have a bath again tbh.

Sakura7 · 24/02/2019 12:20

Baths are great and there's nothing filthy about them. If you wash every day you're not going to be particular dirty, and anyway think about the huge amount of soapy water that this 'dirt' is being dissolved into. As a PP said, this is just another manifestation of obsessive modern ideas about hygiene.

Busybusybust · 24/02/2019 12:23

I’ve lived in this house for 25 years and have only been in the bath once (when the shower broke down). Can’t see the point in wallowing in your own dirt, I’d rather spend the time in a nice warm, clean bed.

woollyheart · 24/02/2019 14:35

Some people enjoy baths.

Some people enjoy showers.

It really doesn't matter, and you can do what you like.

It is quite unpleasant to tar people who don't agree with you as dirty and filthy. That is not a good argument. It is opting out of a discussion to try to evoke disgust to shut other people up.

LaurieMarlow · 24/02/2019 15:43

It’s also goddamn stupid.

If people really believe that having a daily bath makes you ‘filthy’ then they’ve drunk the kool aid on the obsessive hygiene front to a degree that I’d be slightly worried for them.

ScreamingValenta · 24/02/2019 15:51

Bubbles, tea, wine, candles etc.

None of these are essential ingredients for a bath.

reallyanotherone · 24/02/2019 16:10

I hope you change the sheets every time you get out of bed. Or you will be lying in your own dead skin cells and the last hours dirt Wink

BertrandRussell · 24/02/2019 18:33

Love the “wallowing in your own dirt” people!

What about children? Very few young children have showers. Is their dirt different?

Alsohuman · 24/02/2019 18:37

Children get a lot dirtier than most adults too.

RomanyQueen1 · 24/02/2019 18:40

I love a soak in the bath it's my sunday evening after about 8pm. I rinse off with the shower though.
The rest of the week, I shower.

I totally agree. The "stewing in your own filth" people have got a problem.

greenelephantscarf · 24/02/2019 19:29

I always rinse off after a bath and am Shock at the amount of people who don't.
