To think baths are completely overrated

Single parent and my children are with their father this weekend.

I’ve worked flat out all day on laundry, chores, admin. Thought I’d have a bath as a treat. Usually I love a long scalding shower. However I’ve got a bad back and thought that soaking in a bath with my book would be perfect.

Wrong.

I’d forgotten I don’t enjoy baths!
It’s lovely and warm for first five mins but I can’t stand the temperature gradually dropping. And so begins cycle of release of water, top up with hot water. Repeat. Repeat. But never really warm enough, or nor beyond a few minutes.

So many, especially women, love.

What am I missing?!

I hate, hate, hate baths but my dh spends every Sunday afternoon soaking in the tub. I just don't get the appeal.

Pk37 · 23/02/2019 16:38

I love baths , could spend hours in one .
However to feel clean it has to be showers

tattooq · 23/02/2019 16:39

I love bathing, in fact I am currently in the bath Grin I won't stay in hotels/airbnbs if they don't have baths, showers to me are only for a quick wash and do not compare to luxuriously soaking in the bath. But I don't find that the temperature drops that quickly, I've been in 20 mins and it's still hot, I couldn't be arsed having to top it up every five minutes.

littlemeitslyn · 23/02/2019 16:40

I 🥰 baths and have 2 a day !

SpringForEver · 23/02/2019 16:43

I don't mind either baths or showers as long as the shower isn't one where you have to run around to get wet.

However, I can't always stand long enough in a shower and would end up sitting on the floor with the shower head in my hand. If I am feeling OK a shower is good, I use the bath now, and rinse off with the shower hose before I get out.

Bath is good for aches and relaxing.

iolaus · 23/02/2019 16:44

I can be in the bath a long time and get my 8 year old to go in afterwards and he'll still complain that the water is too hot, so I'm surprised it cools down that fast for you - I do have it so I practically scald myself getting in though

I don't think I could lie there with nothing but with a book, yes I love it

Santaclarita · 23/02/2019 16:49

I would love to have a bath in the house. I do horse riding and after some days I'm in pain from sore muscles and a bath would be so lovely. But it's not a big deal, kind of just get used to the pain. Grin

userxx · 23/02/2019 16:51

Love a bath, don't like having a shower, never feel thoroughly clean afterwards.

WaterlooElephant · 23/02/2019 16:51

Tolerate baths but hate trying to get out of them. I don't have a shower and have been on at dh for years about getting one. Dh hates showers, he likes wallowing in a tub. I have saved up enough money now to get the bathroom and put in a new one, but we are having the bath/shower combi set-up. I really want a wet room but dh is so Hmm.

insancerre · 23/02/2019 16:54

YABU
I loathe showers
In fact, I can’t remember the last time I had one, probably not this year
It’s baths all the way
As for soaking in my own muck, how ridiculous!

reallyanotherone · 23/02/2019 16:54

It’s not the water cooling quickly it’s your body acclimatising to the heat.

Trick is to start the bath running at a comfortable temp, then get in and ramp up the heat until full.

I hate showers. Can’t get properly warm standing under a shower. Although i have recently discovered cabinet showers you can heat up to 40 deg with steam first. They’re bliss.

Bumblebeezy · 23/02/2019 16:56

I thought they were totally overrated until I moved into a house without one.

I'm never in long and can never understand how my DH can sit reading in the bath for ages, going all pruny. I get bored.

Some days I really miss having a bath though!!

Chelseajunior · 23/02/2019 16:58

Showers in summer
Baths in winter 😁

Time40 · 23/02/2019 17:00

The secret of a good bath temperature is to run it when you're in it - that way, your body gets used to the high temperature. If you run a bath that you can bear to get into, it will feel cold in about five minutes. My method is: fill a third full with water of a bearable temperature, then get in and run the rest. I only need to top up once (or at most twice) in an hour. And to make baths less boring, read. I do all my reading in the bath. Also, for perfect bath pleasure, you need a chair by the side of the bath with your towel and all the other things on it that you might need.

And yes, in answer to the original question: YABU to dislike baths. Baths are one of the best things in life.

TwoRoundabouts · 23/02/2019 17:00

I detest baths. I prefer a nice hot shower any day.

Oh and wet rooms are hell unless you have two or more bathrooms.

OhTheRoses · 23/02/2019 17:03

I love long hot baths with Badedas (reminds me of my gran) even have a little pillow. Good coffee, Archers Omnibus. Utter bliss.

greenelephantscarf · 23/02/2019 17:05

yanbu
baths are pointless.
much prefer a shower too.

GlitterPixie · 23/02/2019 17:08

I hate baths

Mokepon · 23/02/2019 17:08

Yabu.
I love a quick shower but a bath is truly one of life's little luxuries.
I don't get the whole ewwww you're stewing in your own filth, how dirty are you??!!! And I generally have a quick rinse under the shower after anyway to wash my hair.
Roasting hot water, glass of wine or water, kindle, soap and face mask. Has restored my sanity on many an occasion.

MaggieAndHopey · 23/02/2019 17:10

Same. Even on the maybe annual occasion I do fancy a bath, I regret it almost as soon as I get in. And then something about the heat of the water makes a terrible lethargy creep in, meaning I can't be bothered to get out, so I have to lie in a gradually cooling bath thinking about all my poor life decisions.

BackforGood · 23/02/2019 17:13

Well, each to their own. I love a bath. In fact I really hate showers. We're all different.

Strugglingtodomybest · 23/02/2019 17:14

Scalding water.
Bubbles.
Cup of tea.
Book/Netflix on the laptop.
An hour to myself.

^^ this

chillpizza · 23/02/2019 17:16

Last time I had a bath was errr 8 years ago just before back surgery due to pain. I hate hate hate them. They cool down way to fast, you sit in your own filth it’s gross. Shower all the way here.

Crunchymum · 23/02/2019 17:18

Oddly our first two (rented) places were bath only. Cannot abide having a bath these days.

moonlight1705 · 23/02/2019 17:19

Hate my bath.....too narrow and shallow so I end up either having cold boobs or cold knees or cold legs.

Best bath ever was a Japanese deep bath with inbuilt temperature control which kept it at your perfect temperature. I will eventually get it installed over here.
