To think baths are completely overrated

Single parent and my children are with their father this weekend.

I’ve worked flat out all day on laundry, chores, admin. Thought I’d have a bath as a treat. Usually I love a long scalding shower. However I’ve got a bad back and thought that soaking in a bath with my book would be perfect.

Wrong.

I’d forgotten I don’t enjoy baths!
It’s lovely and warm for first five mins but I can’t stand the temperature gradually dropping. And so begins cycle of release of water, top up with hot water. Repeat. Repeat. But never really warm enough, or nor beyond a few minutes.

So many, especially women, love.

What am I missing?!

Baths are very out of fashion now but my favourite time each evening was a pile of toddlers laughing and larking in the bath and then all wrapped up cozy in towels. Somehow showering children isn't as delightful

Amrad · 23/02/2019 17:22

You've got to really prepare to have a fabulous bath. I don't like baths in our current bath as it's too short and too steep so you can't really sink into it properly.

U2HasTheEdge · 23/02/2019 17:24

I don't like showers.

Love a hot bath, reading my kindle.

rosinavera · 23/02/2019 17:24

I LOVE baths too and I HATE showering. :-)

BrizzleMint · 23/02/2019 17:25

For a successful bath you need:

One long enough to lie down in.
A waterproof kindle.
Bubble bath.
A shower attachment.
A combi boiler.

and keep topping the water up as needed.

userxx · 23/02/2019 17:25

@chillpizza Sit in your own filth? I'm intrigued to know how you get so filthy! The mind boggles.

mydogisthebest · 23/02/2019 17:26

I hate baths too. I haven't had one for over 20 years. Complete waste of time in my view and a waste of water. So so boring sitting in a bath and no way do I want to sit in one and read.

We recently bought a house with only a shower and plan to replace it with a large walk in shower.

chillpizza · 23/02/2019 17:28

I work the land and deal with animals. However regardless you sweat so filth.

Mmmmbrekkie · 23/02/2019 17:29

Thank you
I love that I’m not alone

Showers all the way....

Re. Walk in showers/wet rooms..

Do you not find it freezing? Unless you have the room temp up very high i just can’t get warm in a shower, no matter how hot the water.

bigbluebus · 23/02/2019 17:30

Couldn't agree more. I can't remember the last time anyone had a bath in
this house. We have a longer length brand new bath which was installed last summer and has never been used except when the plumber filled it with cold water to weigh it down. We only had it installed because it is a 'family' house which we will be selling at some point in the nest few years as it is too big for us now. We also have a shower room which is used all the time. I think baths are great for small children but that's it.

Ellie56 · 23/02/2019 17:30

I can't remember the last time I had a bath, but the only time I ever do, is when I've got back ache.

I agree, it is a total pain having to keep topping up the water. showers are so much easier and you don't go all wrinkly either.

The Japanese bath sounds interesting moonlight.

ShowMeTheKittens · 23/02/2019 17:31

I have no idea how people ever attend to their feet if not in the bath.Or shave their legs. However, I love bathing and others do not.

wanderings · 23/02/2019 17:31

"Then there comes that dreadful moment when the water's running cold,
in the bath, in the bath.
When the soap is lost for ever, and you're feeling tired and old,
in the bath, in the bath.
It's time to pull the plug out, time to mop the bathroom floor.
The towel is in the cupboard... and the cupboard is next door!!!!"

I don’t do baths, but if I did, I would shower first and then into the bath - the Japanese way. The thought of sitting in dirty water is vile.

greenelephantscarf · 23/02/2019 17:33

the size is anotherthing.
I'm 5.9
apart from a japanese bathtub all baths are just not big enough. I can either recline or stretch my legs. not both.

woollyheart · 23/02/2019 17:33

I think some baths are better insulated than others. So they hold heat better.
My bath is wonderful and holds heat for ages.

FuerzaAreaUruguay · 23/02/2019 17:34

I want a tub that maintains the temp of the water. That would be my dream.

Singlenotsingle · 23/02/2019 17:36

Not keen on showers, especially if I've got to wash my hair as well. I drop the soap, or the flannel, or something else. Bang my elbow on the door, scrabble around looking for the towel (which is usually just out of reach). Not relaxing at all. Give me a bath any day, especially on a cold winter's day when I need to warm up.

TheyGotMyName · 23/02/2019 17:36

I go through phases.. today I'm dying to hop in the bath. I mainly use it as an excuse to get away from dss and dh when they are getting on my tits, so about once a month rather than hit them with a pan in the face, I have a long soak in the bath.... today is one of them days. Other wise I'm a shower person but it has to be really really hot

BrizzleMint · 23/02/2019 17:40

@greenelephantscarf for about £250 you can get a 1800mm by 800mm deep bath from Homebase - we have one and it's bliss, no cold knees or shoulders.

Februaryblooms · 23/02/2019 17:41

I enjoy both, but LOVE baths when I'm pregnant (such as now) it's like a non edible craving. Bubbles Grin

Currently spending 30-60 minutes submerged in bubbles every night before bed. Lathering soap on my bump and watching Netflix = heavenly!

I do see where you're coming from about the temperature dropping quickly though. That is a nuisance.

AlexaAmbidextra · 23/02/2019 17:43

The thought of sitting in dirty water is vile.

See, I don’t get this. If you’re sitting in dirty water then the dirt has come from somewhere, ie. your body. So if you’ve been going about your business quite happily with all this ‘dirt’ on you, why does it suddenly become vile and a problem when you’re supposedly sitting in it? Confused

MaggieAndHopey · 23/02/2019 17:51

@AlexaAmbidextra

For me it's more the thought of a bath as a sort of bacterial soup, encouraging conditions for bacterial growth. I read somewhere that there's 100 times more bacteria in the average bath than in the inside of a rubbish bin. Add body-temperature water and you've basically got a microbial free for all.

BlueSkiesLies · 23/02/2019 17:54

Sit in your own filth? I'm intrigued to know how you get so filthy! The mind boggles.

The only time I ever want a bath is after some kind of endurance sport event. Where I am usually cold and very muddy.

So yeah, I do end up sitting in my own filth!

Bath for the muscles and to relax. Shower after to get clean.
