I am glad that this monster has been named publicly. The idea that he would have been protected after murdering Alesha MacPhail made me sick. His picture is all over the news now.

The reason he was named is because Campbell blamed Toni McClachlan, the father’s girlfriend, for Alesha’a murder and made a series of horrendous allegations against her, all of which were published alongside her name and photograph.

Was that officially given as the reason?

He should get an extra 5 years (at least) for doing that but sadly I doubt it will be taken account of at sentencing.

Good that he was named, if only because sticky-beak Katie Hopkins won't be able to go off on another of her Syrian refugee rants.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 24/02/2019 15:16

violent psychopath Campbell is violent, yes that’s proven.Psychopath no.
He was assessed by a psychiatrist and no mental health issues were put forward at trial
Because an act is heinous doesn’t mean there’s a mental health cause
Pathologising depraved acts doesn’t explain,it just adds an erroneous label

NunoGoncalves · 24/02/2019 16:08

He may or may not have been born “bad” but frequent strong cannabis, alcohol and extreme internet violence really didn’t help, did it?

Tbh that stuff all just seems like tabloid shit-stirring to me. Probably based on his defence bringing it up in a desperate attempt to imply that external influences were to blame for his actions.

He drank sometimes - like most teenagers and like almost all young adults!
He smoked weed sometimes - like LOADS of teenagers and adults
He played violent videogames and streamed himself playing them while making jokes - teenagers do this ALL THE TIME

One article I read even said he was into "bodybuilding". "Despite his lean frame he could bench press 50kg". What? Basically any vaguely in shape male can bench press 50kg. That was reported because it was brought up in court to demonstrate that he could easily have carried the girl, but the good old British tabloids seized on it to make out like he was some roid-raged gym freak.

In everything I've read about him and his youtube videos and how he spent his free time has made him sound like a very very normal teenage boy. Maybe that's what scares people so much.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 24/02/2019 16:11

When something dreadful happens it’s natural to seek explanations and seek a cause
Labels and half baked theories have been postulated on this thread to try explain
However,it isn’t always that straightforward and there may be no apparent cause/reason

LagunaBubbles · 24/02/2019 16:45

Oh there will be a reason even if its something that's unfathomable to most people, such as he wanted to rape a child. Simply because he's a bad person.

ohcarriemathison · 24/02/2019 18:58

@NunoGoncalves yes, this is what I find really scary. My son has a YouTube channel, he has a GoPro, he has a trampoline, he plays Fortnite.
I said this to my husband and he said yes, but our son is kind and caring with bags of empathy for others.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 24/02/2019 22:46

nuno I don’t know what world you inhabit, but daily strong cannabis, heavy drinking and violent internet viewing isn’t “normal” for 16 year old boy.

And it if is becoming more normalised then girls and women are literallly screwed.

Butchyrestingface · 25/02/2019 00:21

Where do you stand on the fire raising and skinning live cats?

NunoGoncalves · 25/02/2019 01:28

Where do you stand on the fire raising and skinning live cats

I don't know what fire raising even is but my point was more that tabloids will sensationalise literally anything, not that he wasn't possibly doing other weird crazy shit. I never knew this boy, after all! Just saying that drinking alcohol, smoking cannabis and playing violent computer games is not weird or crazybehaviour for teenagers.

YouBumder · 25/02/2019 07:33

Fire raising is the Scottish term for arson.

There does appear to have been definite red flags in his behaviour that weren’t followed up.

Shookethtothecore · 25/02/2019 07:39

Where does it say he skinned cats? I’m not doubting you btw I’m just wondering how the red flags got ignored

StoorieHoose · 25/02/2019 07:43

Where are you all reading that he was a heavy strong cannabis user? Everything I've read says he was an occasional user not a heavy daily user?

MarthasGinYard · 25/02/2019 07:47

So the evil child murdering scumbag rapist gets to play on his x box and the poor thing is finding it boring Hmm

Lethal injection would save millions

Butchyrestingface · 25/02/2019 08:12

Where does it say he skinned cats? I’m not doubting you btw I’m just wondering how the red flags got ignored

Google it. It comes up immediately.

I tend to agree with you, btw. But even some of the milder stuff his lawyer said in opposition to him being named (i.e., he suffers from anxiety, depression), his mother denied.

pinkhousesarebest · 25/02/2019 08:38

Did he skin cats or is this hearsay? If he had been doing such a despicable thing, surely it would have been reported to the police.., so far I am not seeing any tangible evidence that he did.
As someone said upthread, the appalling thing is that he seems like a fairly normal teenager. No massive red flags. The DM have been ferreting around since the verdict but the best they can come up with is that he was eyeballing people on the bus.

BejamNostalgia · 25/02/2019 08:51

It was established at trial he and the girlfriend had been selling to the accused and his 14 year old sister. That was admitted. He doesn't have to be in Pablo Escobar's league to be doing wrong.*

It’s effectively been decriminalised. Police don’t bother prosecuting it. You can walk past a policeman now smoking a joint and they won’t do anything. Plenty of teenagers have the odd joint with the parents knowledge. An awful lot of respectable and professional people smoke weed. Plenty of them will sell a bit to their friends too.

I don’t and I’m not a fan of it, but banging on about that somehow making it her family’s fault and that Alesha was in some sort of dangerous squalid drug den full of lurking addicts is not true.

BejamNostalgia · 25/02/2019 09:07

Was that officially given as the reason?

Yes:

Mr Graham also pointed to the defence used by Campbell, who tried to blame Toni McLachlan, the girlfriend of Alesha’s father, for the crime while maintaining his own anonymity

He said: “There is a distinct lack of equity to this if the accused can impune the character of someone of 19, where the wrongly accused can be identified quite legally and properly by the media and the dishonest accuser enjoys statutory protection

There was a slightly longer version I saw when it was first reported which mentioned McClachlan would always turn up on the internet in relation to the case, but I can’t find it now.

The main reasons given were revulsion at the case, his name already being widely available online and the fact he had made accusations about McClachlan. Any suggestion they had to do it because of racism is just an utter fabrication.

Some people have been watching too much tv. Diagnosing him with various disorders from their armchair Hmm

Those saying he won't last two minutes inside. Oh, he will. There aren't a group of thugs waiting to pounce on every paedo that sets foot in jail.

And he won't be kept in solitary or in a high security establishment throughout his sentence just based on his offence. The whole point of the system is to rehabilitate and reduce risk in time for release. He will be decategorised throughout his sentence.

Nobody is going to run around attacking random people with the surname Campbell and if they do then the police can deal with them.

Likening him to Thomson and Venables is pointless. They were 10 years old. It was different.

LagunaBubbles · 25/02/2019 09:23

Some people have been watching too much tv. Diagnosing him with various disorders from their armchair

Who has diagnosed him?

I said there was a high chance he's a psychopath, let's see:

Fire raising, killing animals, rape, murder, lack of remorse and lack of empathy, compulsive liar mmm. Hmm

LagunaBubbles · 25/02/2019 09:30

Shpoot searched the thread and still can't find anyone diagnosing him with anything?

shpoot · 25/02/2019 10:07

You just diagnosed him as a "compulsive liar". Not sure where you got the information that his lying has been diagnosed as compulsive behaviour

LagunaBubbles · 25/02/2019 10:32

Shpoot, I didnt diagnose him as a compulsive liar, that is what his behaviour was around Aleeshas disappearance, and his court appearance. He lied about what he did that night and then he lied and tried to blame someone else for his crime. That was such an awfull lie it was the main reason the judge lifted reporting restrictions.

shpoot · 25/02/2019 10:38

That type of lying is not "compulsive". It serves a purpose. Covering up his crime.

He's a liar. That we know. Compulsive? Not a fact as you have no evidence he's been diagnosed.

My whole point is that this thread is wild assumptions from people who have never spent time with people like him. Have never worked in a prison environment or dealt with prisoners.

You said there will be people who want to make a name for themselves by targeting him. This kind of stuff is rare. Yeah, he'll get a few smacks along the way, almost everyone does. More likely for looking at someone the wrong way or not repaying a debt.

Just the way it is

NunoGoncalves · 25/02/2019 11:01

Did he skin cats or is this hearsay?

It's hearsay. Gossip among the locals. Skinning animals alive as a precursor to becoming a deranged killer is such a cliché that I wouldn't be surprised if there's nothing at all to it. Similar rumours probably go around whenever something horrific like this happens tbf.

LagunaBubbles · 25/02/2019 11:05

I said he was a compulsive liar to describe his behaviour. I also know of other things he has lied about. My son and him knew someone in common. Couldn't care less if you believe that or not. My post was also after your post stating Diagnosing him with various disorders from their armchair so couldn't have been what you are referring to?
