Transgender athletes in sport

My dd plays ladies football. Recently she played against a team with a player who looked and sounded very masculine. It has been confirmed since that this player was transgender male to female.

Dh and I have had many conversations about the rights and wrongs of allowing this.

This player had a significant physical advantage.

We would both be really interested to hear peoples thoughts on this

Sports should be segregated by sex (xx/xy).

The idea of separating sports via gender is ludicrous to me. Last time I checked, there were 76 "genders". Therefore, if we do split by gender, we'll need 76 different categories surely?

Binglebong · 22/02/2019 23:23

Maybe sailing, in some categories,Binglebong? Basically things where skill rather than pure muscle makes the vital difference -- and something else provides the power.

Maybe, but there's a fair bit of strength needed in sailing. You hawl stuff around, getting sails up and down etc. I'm not very knowledgeable about it, sure we can find a poster who is though.

UrsulaPandress · 22/02/2019 23:50

Equestrian sports don't need to be segregated by sex. And I always say shooting as well but never done that so not sure.

Binglebong · 22/02/2019 23:54

That's as far as I got Ursula. Where something else does all the physical elements, where it is purely down to skill (ok holding yourself in a position) then it can be mixed. But not otherwise. I just can't think of any others.

FermatsTheorem · 23/02/2019 00:05

Someone said recently (I think on one of the Navratilova threads) that there was a shooting event which was open at the Olympics, until gold was won by a woman. At which point they decided to have a men's event... and no women's event in that particular category!

AGHHHH · 23/02/2019 00:39

Biological males should not be on the same team as a biological female, and vice versa. Sexes ARE different.

@sharedthismonth you think feminists don't think sexes are different? Confused

And you think there are so few women in the board room because..? Structural inequality is why there are so few women in the boardroom. Sexist stereotypes. Lack of equality of opportunity is why.

Women aren't in the boardroom in great numbers because of patriarchal attitudes to our sex and maternity and parenting and caring roles and on and on. Not because we're less capable.

I so hope I've read your posts wrong but I'm not sure...

Arrow I'm curious what you mean when you say that women who have had children have differences in your sport?

Also, I read somewhere that male vs. female muscle fibers themselves are different. Slow twitch fibers are important for endurance and conditioning while fast twitch fibers are important for power. Men usually have more fast twitch muscle fibers compared to women which is why men are stronger and women are more fatigue-resistant.

SignMeUp well, some women find their stomach muscles dont knit back together. Mine separated quite significantly in my final pregnancy & so i cant tense my stomach to absorb a punch like i used to. Also, the bladder. Not all women can jump like they used to Wink

CallMeSirShotsFired · 23/02/2019 12:31

Oh bum, I clearly missed the TRA infiltration.

Never mind, they'll be along again soon; they just can't bear it when the women speak without them! and when they know we're speaking truth

In the height of my competitive sporting carrier, I'm not ashamed to say I would have easily gone full on Tonya Harding with a MTF transexual that was beating me at my own sport because of their physical advantage.

I didn't spend 20 years grafting at stupid o clock in the morning for a man to Waltz in and take my trophy because he has the physical capability to jump quad combination in a dress and I didn't possess that strength.

Can't skate with no knee ligaments #justsaying.

derxa · 23/02/2019 14:29

England Rugby (see, not England Men's Rugby) has it's "Lions" - with all that it evokes of strength, power, king of the jungle etc. the England Rugby team are not the Lions

derxa · 23/02/2019 14:32

These transwomen should not be playing in women's teams. It's a disgrace.

averylongtimeago · 23/02/2019 14:57

Why isn't it fair for trans women to compete against women?
Well.... I will just leave these here:

I agree. People's feelings shouldn't come before facts and logic.

DataBreachCentral · 23/02/2019 15:26

Pregnancy has a significant impact when it comes to women in sport. Traumatic birth injuries, prolapses, c-sections etc. can have a long-term impact on a sporting career

When Serena Williams wanted to start a family she (obviously) had to stop training and competing at some point. Andy Murray on the other hand could merrily start his family with zero impact on his career.

No transwoman is ever going to miss so much as one training session due to periods or pregnancy, let alone an entire competitive season.

Thanks Arrow and Data, those make sense.

I saw posts deleted from them on another thread with a note from MNHQ to say they were a previously banned poster and troll, so they were banning and removing again.
