It's called Fences.
It's essentially a monologue from Denzel Washington.

Perhaps it's supposed to be a study on social injustices at the time, but I have endured 40 minutes of it and literally can't take one more second!

Please don't tell me that this is some sort of award winning film and that I'm a bit thick or something?

I'd heard the title before which is why I thought it would be good. 40 minutes in, and literally nothing has happened. Except yer man ranting on and fucking on and fucking on.

I love Denzel usually, and his acting is good, but fuck me, the writing is pure and utter unadulterated shite!

It's a terribly dull film, I agree. I think I managed half an hour. The absolute WORST dull film though is The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford. They don't even give you the interest of a whodunnit!

Nancydrawn · 21/02/2019 03:32

It's a wonderful and seriously important play. It doesn't translate well to screen. In the theater, it's mesmerizing.

BitOfFun · 21/02/2019 03:32

Oh, and The Knowing. I was happy to remain in ignorance after I fell asleep an hour in.

Dohee · 21/02/2019 03:41

Just watch the damn thing. Don't pick on me when you haven't even watched what I'm talking about. You're like someone butting into a conversation throwing all sorts of accusations around when you don't even know what the conversation is.

captainpantbeard · 21/02/2019 03:42

Blades of Glory is a great film!!

Dohee · 21/02/2019 03:43

This one isn't one you could even fall asleep to though as he just rants on and on and on. I had to just take my headphones off in case my brain exploded.

MissLanesAmericanCousin · 21/02/2019 04:05

Dohee, Seriously? You think that's being picked on? I'm not attacking the film at all actually. I'm offended by the way you think the main character acts like he is both Bipolar and has ADHD and concrete evidence shows that most people with mental illness are not violent. Especially those with ADHD. Annoying maybe. Forgetful absolutely. But, I have never heard of someone with that particular MH issue and be violent. You expected him to be violent because you have these preconceived ideas of what these MH illness look like. And, I'm telling you from experience and being in therapy for close to 30 years and making a study of it, that this presumption that you have with those that those issues a hardly violent. I will admit that men with Bipolar tend to be more aggressive than women and that there are cases of men with Bipolar being violent but they are not as prevelant as the tabloids would suggest.

I have no problem, otherwise, of your critic of the film. It does sound quite shit, I am just disappointed that you jump to the conclusion that he has these MH disorders that is all.

I am trying to have a civil discussion with you. I actually complimented many times. Did you just glaze over that?

Not to mention, how can I be butting in a conversation, when you posed a question on an open forum? It isn't some closed chat room, Can't you step back a little and open your scope. To try to see my side of it?

I did not mean to offend you. Quite the contrary. I'm just really tired of the constant stigma being attached to various mental disorders.

Yes, the plot seems very stupid and incorrect. I believe your assessment, and you come off as someone who has really good taste in film. I'm just trying to say, please be a little more mindful with the things you post, misinformation isa dangerous thing.

I do not wish you ill will. I really don't. I just can't abide things like this. There is such a terrible stigma surrounding MH and the misinformation out there is enormous.

Please forgive me, if I was too abrasive. It has been a long day and MH issues is a sore spot for me.

GreenOliveOrBlackOlive · 21/02/2019 04:12

Agree about Moulin Rouge. I really wanted to like it but I hated the juxtaposition of modern music set in the past. And it was so confusing.

And omg yes to The Shape of Water. What a load of pants.

I’ll add ..Big Fish. Ludicrous.

The Revenant. Something about snow, a bear, a big beard. Hours of nothing happening.

Lincoln was awful. great rambling speeches. Like a two hour party political broadcast.

A pp mentioned Vanilla Sky. I can completely understand why, but strangely I really liked it. Confused

MissLanesAmericanCousin · 21/02/2019 04:57

GreenOliveOrBlackOlive, I absolutely adored Vanilla Sky. As a matter of fact, I think I'll go on youtube now and listen to the soundtrack. It's beautiful

As for Big Fish we will agree to disagree, the book was utter shit, but I thought the film was both magical and incredibly romantic. But, we can agree to disagree. Smile

kateandme · 21/02/2019 04:59

totally off topic but I found something great tonight. the bold and the beautiful.who knew.

Seahorseshoe · 21/02/2019 05:01

This did well in awards season a couple of years ago. I've been meaning to watch it. Thanks for the heads up.

sequinafortune · 21/02/2019 05:07

Inception. The Revenant. Titanic.
Just give Leo the bloody Oscar so he stops!!! Grin I did like Wolf of Wall Street though.
(he may already have one, I'm an uncultured swine with little pop culture knowledge!) Grin

MrsTerryPratcett · 21/02/2019 05:08

Solaris

Even George Clooney's bottom couldn't improve that shite. We walked out talked about how boring and awful it was and a man overheard us and cheerfully said, "you should see the three hour Russian original"

I'd rather eat worms.

sequinafortune · 21/02/2019 05:08

The series Dirty John on Netflix is good if anyone is looking for a new binge watch. I watched 5 episodes in a row. I have no regrets, and a house that still requires vacuuming!!

onemorecupofcoffeefortheroad · 21/02/2019 05:09

Moulin Rouge is one of my favourite films - adore it - and I loved The Shape of Water but oh my gawd the Sandra Bullock one of her floating around in space (was it Gravity?) was dreadful - completely pointless drivel and mind numbingly boring.

Nephilim1964 · 21/02/2019 05:25

Thank Go I'm not the only one who found Gravity as dull as f*ck.

Loved The Shape of Water though. Mind you, I am a bit of a del Toro fan.

Nephilim1964 · 21/02/2019 05:25

*God

PrettyAmazingGrace · 21/02/2019 05:26

Have you ever seen (endured) Falling Down with Michael Douglas?

Oh my, it's grim.

MissCharleyP · 21/02/2019 05:31

I remember the Elvis one - Heartbreak Hotel?

Meet Joe Black is one of the worst films I have ever seen, I was just waiting for Death to claim Antony Hopkins so I could go home.

I also found Closer total crap, waaaaay too much dialogue and not one character I cared about - they were all vile.

Dohee · 21/02/2019 05:43

No, I expected him to be violent because of how his character is portrayed. I also drew the conclusion, simultaneously and separately, that there was something wrong with him.
You can tell me 10 times over that I'm trying to say that I think people with MH problems are violent. I can respond 10 times over that that is not either what I'm thinking or saying.
Watch the fucking film! God, you're as infuriating as the film woman!

OP posts:
Orangeyouglad · 21/02/2019 06:00

Oh god meet joe black was just so bad, also castaway was just so dull as well

stayathomer · 21/02/2019 06:02

Dh recommended Fences to me, he says nothing happens but the acting and the speeches are definitely worth seeing, especially from Viola Davis. I don't normally love that kind of thing so I don't know. And can I put forward Wedding something or other ( Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson) or the last SATC movie? I love romantic comedies but both made me want to throw stuff at the screen!!

Santaclarita · 21/02/2019 06:07

Haven't seen fences but I hated dear John. Liked it up until the bitch left him for another man. Was it that fucking difficult for you to stay faithful?! She annoyed me so much.

MissLanesAmericanCousin · 21/02/2019 06:07

Dohee, okay. I'm tapping out you win. That's fine.

I've had a very long and quite distressful day. So, I'm done.

Again, no ill will. I apologize for any offense I caused.

Enjoy the rest of your evening/night/morning whatever.

I do still stay my the compliments I gave you. You can take that however you want.

But, like I said, I'm tapping out and leaving this thread.

Best wishes to you dohee, and I hope the next film you watch brings you copious amount of joy.

I mean that

Peace. x
