It's called Fences.
It's essentially a monologue from Denzel Washington.

Perhaps it's supposed to be a study on social injustices at the time, but I have endured 40 minutes of it and literally can't take one more second!

Please don't tell me that this is some sort of award winning film and that I'm a bit thick or something?

I'd heard the title before which is why I thought it would be good. 40 minutes in, and literally nothing has happened. Except yer man ranting on and fucking on and fucking on.

I love Denzel usually, and his acting is good, but fuck me, the writing is pure and utter unadulterated shite!

Just after watching bird box, which I thought was drivel, I watched Extinction on Netflix, which I thought was terrific. I never saw it coming, either.

MorrisZapp · 23/02/2019 11:23

There's a film in which the redhead from a Mad Men is married to a small town shop owner and dabbling in the furry scene behind his back. The husband finds out and dresses up as a furry, only to be mistaken for Bigfoot by the gullible townsfolk.

This film exists. I have seen it.

BartonHollow · 23/02/2019 11:27

@MorrisZapp

The film does exist. It's called Pottersville. I just googled

Gth1234 · 23/02/2019 11:29

Never mind films, what about books. Years and years ago, I read a lot of SF. I read a (highly rated ) book by Samuel Delaney called Dahlgren. I vaguely remember the plot, but it was awful. It was about 700 pages, and I gave up at about page 650.

MorrisZapp · 23/02/2019 11:29

I watched it to make sure. The reviews are hilarious, unlike the actual film which is mind bendingly bad.

GabsAlot · 23/02/2019 11:29

love in bruges one of colins best i think-also recomend the guard

NunoGoncalves · 23/02/2019 11:34

I third the recommendation of The Guard. Also Calvary, which has the same director and Brendan Gleeson yet again, is also good.

In a similar but not really vein, I like Shane Black's writing: Kiss Kiss Bang Band and The Nice Guys are both really good.

Dohee · 23/02/2019 11:50

I've seen The Guard and wasn't utterly blown away by it but did enjoy it. From the hype, I'm not sure what I was expecting.

Having forgotten this thread and we started watching Roma last night on Netflix - we were getting fidgety after the opening credits (as someone mentioned earlier - complete silence as you watch water being sloshed down a drain).

Then Roma went into a courtyard, spoke to a dog and disappeared through a door - my other half said 'I'm not sure about this' and then it all came back to me - a poster on this thread saying she goes through a door and you stare at the door for 30 secs until she comes back out again.

We turned off at that point and watched The Kite Runner instead which was brilliant - I sobbed all the way through though.

Smotheroffive · 23/02/2019 16:27

Oh kite runner, yes!

PuppyMonkey · 23/02/2019 16:52

Just popping on here to add Lost in Translation to the overrated shite list. Also Brokeback Mountain.

And I know nobody ever rated that reboot of Charlie’s Angels with Drew Barrymore and someone who was possibly Cameron Diaz, but that is definitively the worst film ever made.

Although I haven’t watched Fences tbf.

tradition · 23/02/2019 17:32

In Bruges, so funny and shocking. Loved that film

IcecreamSodaWithVanillaOnTop · 23/02/2019 19:57

American Beauty.
I actually went to the cinema to watch it as there was so much hype at the time (back when Kevin Spacey was beloved by all). It wasn’t awful, just totally overrated!

poundoflard · 23/02/2019 20:07

I Loved Moulin Rouge, I had no idea about it, it was newly released and I saw it on a plane so probably 10 years before it arrived in the UK cinemas :) so hadnt heard any hype or negative reviews

Worst one I saw was Wild at Heart. Waste of time , money and my imagination hoping it would get bettter.

Ditto Magnolia

And dont get me started on Mamma Mia

Smotheroffive · 23/02/2019 20:09

Cringing now at American Beauty, can't unknow!

BartonHollow · 23/02/2019 20:12

I saw it with my DM we were Confused

I remember him winning the Oscar and my DM being like

FOR THAT SHITE???!!!

StroppyWoman · 23/02/2019 20:13

Nuno
Love Calvary and the Shane Blacks, which I've seen about 3 times each.

Some of the 'worthy' award winners have been tedious. The English Patient has one beautiful scene in a candlelit cathedral paintings scene and was otherwise 2h43 I won't ever get back.

poundoflard · 23/02/2019 20:22

I liked Inception, but we watched it at home and kept pausing it so my DS could explain the plot to me, I hate sci fi but I found that mesmerising as I tried to keep up and figure it out.
(It does help having someone with prior knowledge of the film giving a running commentary) Grin

BartonHollow · 23/02/2019 20:47

I ADORE the English Patient

"You were holding his collar"

"You'll never come to Dorset"

Etc etc BlushGrin

Travisandthemonkey · 23/02/2019 21:45

I’m watching la la land
I want to kill them both. Twats

poundoflard · 23/02/2019 22:00

my thoughts too @travisandthemonkey

utter nonsense silliness
doesn't help I don't much like the music either.

BartonHollow · 23/02/2019 22:00

La La Land is very overrated I must say

It literally only made any impact on me due to its last 5 minutes resonating personally

LifeCasting · 23/02/2019 22:27

So many hours wares on shit, emperor’s new clothes, films.

Planet of the Apes
Inception
Then all those shit, overhyped films e.g. Holiday with Camera-on Diaz & crap Jude Law, she should marry Adam Sandler, or is it Ben whatsit? who morphed into one... various Friday nights endured on the sofa with Keira Crapleigh’s one facial expression, many, many “art” or edgy films featuring lesbian kisses - oh no, not aimed at creepy men at all...

I fucking hate mainstream cinema! Is all shit.

LifeCasting · 23/02/2019 22:28

Wasted, not wares.
I don’t belong to this century, hence typos.

Travisandthemonkey · 23/02/2019 22:29

@BartonHollow
Great thanks! Now I have to watch the last 5 mins!!! Aaaaaah
He’s a twat. She’s a twat. End of
