It's called Fences.
It's essentially a monologue from Denzel Washington.

Perhaps it's supposed to be a study on social injustices at the time, but I have endured 40 minutes of it and literally can't take one more second!

Please don't tell me that this is some sort of award winning film and that I'm a bit thick or something?

I'd heard the title before which is why I thought it would be good. 40 minutes in, and literally nothing has happened. Except yer man ranting on and fucking on and fucking on.

I love Denzel usually, and his acting is good, but fuck me, the writing is pure and utter unadulterated shite!

He he Peach although seriously also sorry to hear you have such stuff derailing you. Hope things get better.

Dohee · 21/02/2019 21:26

@DrunkUnicorn I was determined to see it through! Alas, even my sheer grit and determination couldn't carry me through Grin

Well I have a long list of films to avoid tonight thanks to this thread.

If some poor unfortunate does happen to attempt to tackle Fences, please do report back! Wink

Was so glad to hear you hated Tree of Life too Barton and Cardigans had to laugh that someone had beaten you to it on page 11 when I'd already done before that!

Actually fairly early on, but I couldnt recall the name, that took another twelve hours on, and then Barton agreed with me,but it was awarded the highest of honours Cannes film festival awards, so much to that!

I really enjoyed Falling Down

Glad to see others have Moulin Rouge as high on their rewatch list. Love love Ewan, amazing musical selflessly indulgent extravaganza.

BartonHollow · 21/02/2019 21:46

@peachgreen

Oh bless you Thanks

There's been times before under various names over the years where I've looked back and thought

Christ! Did I write THAT? What crawled up my arse that day?! and I can only think of a couple of times when I've gone back and apologised

We actually DO seem to broadly share the same film taste also so the arguing was a moot point

BartonHollow · 21/02/2019 21:49

@Smotheroffive

Moulin Rouge even with its cheese now and I still don't like for some reason the Sound Of Music bit is still high on my favourite films list at least top 20

BitOfFun · 21/02/2019 21:52

I LOVED Lobster! It would be a dull world indeed if we all liked the same stuff though.

flapjackfairy · 21/02/2019 21:59

The house of sand and fog. What the heck !
And Mamma Mia ! I can't stand it !
Oh and Lost in blinking translation ! What total rubbish !

tradition · 21/02/2019 22:21

Another Sandra bullock film which is absolute shite is Bird Box, also has John malkovirz and Tom Hollander. An absolute pile of crap.

BartonHollow · 21/02/2019 22:23

Bird Box falls into Watchable Shite for me whereas Alita : Battle Angel was Unwatchable Shite and I wish I'd had the courage to say something to my friend who was also hating it because then we could've left !

peachgreen · 21/02/2019 22:23

Thanks @BartonHollow and @Smotheroffive No excuse for being a dick really, so I appreciate you both being so kind.

@BartonHollow haha I know, every film you've posted so far I've been like "maaaaan I love that film". I've booked tickets for Can You Ever Forgive Me off the back of your recommendation!

My husband is a massive Terence Malick fan but so far I've managed to avoid Tree of Life. Grin

BartonHollow · 21/02/2019 22:59

Oh I missed a couple of posts

@Rspu3

YES! VELVET BUZZSAW TOTAL SHIT NOT EVEN SCARY

@TinklyLittleLaugh

Stan and Ollie was like a BBC 1 Sunday Night Drama over the Christmas period, a decent enough tea and cake type film but nothing special

Smotheroffive · 21/02/2019 23:34

Omg yes, Being John Malkovich, what a load of ol shite (as nan would say)

ilovecardigans · 21/02/2019 23:38

Smother - I definitely need to work on my skim reading skills!

There are many films that I have watched and appreciated, but not particularly enjoyed. Manchester by the Sea is one. Also, Breaking the Waves, The Road and Dancer in the Dark.

My two favourite films are Pulp Fiction and Les Intouchables.

Plornish · 22/02/2019 04:40

OK, I’ve watched Fences now, and I can’t imagine enjoying it at the cinema, or if I sat down to watch it as a Denzel Washington film. You have to watch it as the filming of a play, the kind of thing you’d get on BBC2 at 10pm. It actually gets better as it goes on; the start is particularly wordy and unlike the way anyone talks in real life. I can understand why you might give up. Viola Davis is fantastic, as ever.
I didn’t find the main character hard to understand though: he was damaged and embittered by hardship and discrimination. The play is an indictment of the stunted life chances of African American men in the pre-civil rights era.
As a play, I thought the plot was melodramatic at times, and the symbolism - fences, baseball - a little obvious. It was as if August Wilson was telling us which bits of the text to highlight for our essays.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 22/02/2019 07:01

The Revenant was utter tripe - just felt cold watching it and started to hope he would die so the film would end

I live Blade of Glory it’s so stupid and Falling Down is a really good film shows a different side of LA we don’t usually see in films. I enjoyed Vanilla Sky at the cinema but wouldn’t watch it again but I was entertained

Spectre oh Lordy I thought it would never end it went on and on and on

Dohee · 22/02/2019 07:09

Plornish, I didn't find him hard to understand. I found the dynamics within the relationship hard to understand.

OP posts:
Dohee · 22/02/2019 07:11

And I don't think I have ever watched BBC2 in my life.

OP posts:
Dohee · 22/02/2019 07:15

I actually think that the dynamics of the relationship as they were portrayed, might be the perception a child might have had of a relationship? Anyone know much about the writer? It's like 'Daddy gets angry, Mammy is kind, Mammy & Daddy love each other'.

OP posts:
Mumphineasandferbmadea · 22/02/2019 07:43

Haven't seen that one but films I cant stand/didn't get are:

Ameli (or however you spell it) think I was just too thick for that one.

Moulin Rouge was just awful.

Titanic

One film I really hated was The Village it was so dull but on the plus side I went to see it with my mum who I had never really been close with and our hatred of that film helped us to bond.

I loved the Babadook I think I related to the dark place your mind can go as a single mum to a difficult child. I saw it as the mums depression was the monster. I wasnt in a good place when I watched it which may be why it resonated with me.

StroppyWoman · 22/02/2019 12:11

Dohee
Not serious, surely??
BBC2 is where they store the good stuff. Only Connect, Sewing Bee, Springwatch, all sorts of brilliance - and of course much of Bake Off. (Although Only Connect was better when on BBC4 because yo could play along online then)
BBC1 is for Doctor Who and Attenborough, BBC2 is for everything else.

BartonHollow · 22/02/2019 12:16

Dohee, are you Irish ? I am half Irish and the way you write reminds me so much of my family it's great Grin

WhoGivesADamnForAFlakeyBandit · 22/02/2019 17:21

Talking of monologues, I give you Locke. Almost two hours of Tom Hardy doing a shite Welsh accent while sitting in a car and yelling at people on the phone.

Firstly, he's not wearing a seat belt, he's speeding, he's talking on the phone (albeit hands free) and even reading while driving. He hasn't stopped for the loo either. He got into the car in the first two minutes and that's it - it's just him in the car.

Mummadeeze · 22/02/2019 17:39

The Straight Story. I like David Lynch films but that one was really sleep inducing!

NunoGoncalves · 22/02/2019 17:40

You can't go two hours without going to the toilet?

Kelp23 · 22/02/2019 17:52

Prob gonna get shot for this but I'm still annoyed I had to sit through Les Miserables. Absolute rubbish
