To think current pop music is telling us something very disturbing about the nation’s youth?

Watching the Brit awards (I know, why).
Ed Sheehan. Calvin Harris. Sam Smith. All of whom in my day (hitches bosom) would have been pure radio two fodder.
Only grime gives me hope. What the fuck is wrong with kids today? Not enough class As?

I do really like Jorja Smith and love her Lost & Found album

NotaSpringChicken · 20/02/2019 23:35

We oldies find ourselves being lectured about diet and alcohol consumption by our adult DCs. It is supposed to be the other way round.

Watched Bohemian Rhapsody at the cinema last night for the second time, those truly were the days! As teenagers from the 1970s I still think our music was brill.

HollySwift · 20/02/2019 23:35

Oh yeah, damn us sensible young people who don’t want to end up like our drunk, stupid, selfish parent’s generation Hmm

Millenial

LoisWilkerson1 · 20/02/2019 23:37

It might be an urban myth, but apparently Sam Smith's mummy bought him his career. I could probably afford to buy my ds a milk float.

LoisWilkerson1 · 20/02/2019 23:39

You'll have the last laugh holly when you live to 105 years oldGrin

Catchytune · 20/02/2019 23:39

My mate ( in her 50’s) has taken her daughter to this. They are having a lovely time celeb watching. Not sure the music comes into it.

spudlet7 · 20/02/2019 23:41

At 34, I feel somewhere in the middle of this debate. I'm not as precious as younger millennials but I do indeed love me some Sam Smith BlushGrin

NotaSpringChicken · 20/02/2019 23:44

LoisWilkerson1

Our DCs don't really want us to live to 105, they might prefer an inheritance at an earlier point lol.

Missdread · 20/02/2019 23:44

But Sam Fender though! Amazing talent. He will be huge this year!

Missdread · 20/02/2019 23:47

Plus they missed a huge trick by not asking the superlative Christine and the Queens to perform. There is no-one like her!

FamilyOfAliens · 20/02/2019 23:53

If you think new music is rubbish, have a listen to Steve Lamacq or Marc Riley on BBC Radio 6 Music.

Fat White Family, Karen O, BC Camplight, slowthai, Monster Florence, White Denim, Callum Easter, Young Fathers ... so much fantastic new music.

jacksonmaine · 20/02/2019 23:58

Yes Radio6 is playing a blinder at the moment. So much fantastic music.

GunpowderGelatine · 21/02/2019 00:07

drunk, stupid, selfish parent’s generation

Oh so sorry we didn't let our lives revolve around children who weren't yet born, why didn't anyone tell me I had to stay at home and knit because the Amelia's and Harry's of the world will frown and tut in 19 years time

GunpowderGelatine · 21/02/2019 00:07

But then it is very like millennials to think the world revolves round them Grin

jacksonmaine · 21/02/2019 00:15

Yes I'm afraid we gave them too much love and attention. Smile

Jitterbugz · 21/02/2019 00:23

And my 19yo daughter takes the piss out of the music I listen to. Hah!

Moanger · 21/02/2019 06:42

Me and dh have been moaning about this for ages. Everything is so bland. Whilst I don’t want my kids to grow up to be druggies, I want them to have fun while they’re young, go to clubs, experiment, laugh and be laughed at for doing ridiculous stuff and wearing silly fashion. Where has all the fun gone?

gotin2amess · 21/02/2019 07:41

My nearly 18 year old listens to Drill (prefers London and Manchester sounds to Chicago) and dead artists such as Lil Peep and XXXXtension (I am sure that is not the correct misspelling).

However, he shares his music with ME! We have discussions about gangs, drugs and mental illness! He does not smoke or vape, would never consider taking illegal drugs and eats really healthily.

Some of the videos he shows me are of rappers 'flexing' (showing off their bling) or wearing ridiculous costumes (diamond encrusted flak jackets and so on). Others are of drill artists who have been murdered in gang feuds (a shockingly high number). Perhaps this generation, who have been brought up on social media, just let other people do the edgy and ridiculous stuff.

Applesaregreenandred · 21/02/2019 08:20

Seriously? I listen to that music because I choose to listen to Radio 2 /Heart /Smooth radio - I like Ed Sheehan, Adele, Sam Smith etc. I'm 55.

Do they not play different stuff on stations kids listen to? DS likes 5 Finger Death Punch, Slipknott, HollyWood Undead and a load of stuff I can't remember But it's either Nu Metal noise with grunts for singing and the only word I can hear clearly is 'Fuck'. Otherwise it's stuff about drinking, bitches and drugs. I had to tell him to turn something off the other day with the lyrics 'I want to put my dick in your ass..'

Seriously some of the lyrics are so bad putting women down, glamourising drugs, weapons etc

He does also like some older more classic rock - some of which is the stuff his dad would listen to and I like that less.

YouTheCat · 21/02/2019 08:27

I blame the internet. When I was young and daft the only people to judge my drunkenness were people out drinking. These days it's all over youtube for the world to see.

Halloumimuffin · 21/02/2019 08:32

To be real, there is nothing more boring than a loutish drunk or someone on MDMA (and I've done most things).

You spend years educating about the dangers of drugs and alcohol, making it prohibitively expensive, nightclubs shit and overly policed, and then complain when they actually take it on board and make better choices.

A lot of young people are very, very embarrassed by their drunk parents desperate to relive their 'mad' youth.

HamiltonCork · 21/02/2019 08:34

As if I give a crap that my children are embarrassed about me.

LoisWilkerson1 · 21/02/2019 08:42

Yes 6 Music has some great new stuff. It's a shame it doesn't filter through. I went to see Massive Attack recently and there were a few youngsters, I think a lot of them are having to listen to our stuff to hear anything decent Grin My DS15 loves a bit of 90's Indie.

easyandy101 · 21/02/2019 08:57

On my way to work a little while ago and ended up outside a nightclub at tipping out time AND EVERYONE WAS SOBER, not a crossed eye in sight

Imagine going to a club and not getting shitfaced?

I swear this is why everyone cares all of a sudden

ChesterGreySideboard · 21/02/2019 09:10

I’ve been watching the re runs of Top of the Pops on BBC 4. They started in 1973 (I think) and now we are up to 1986.
The music had changed hugely in those years. What has changed in the last 13 years?
