DS and DD Wage Difference Surprise

DD, 29, is a nurse, went to uni, did placements of 12 hour shifts in various hospitals as a student, all for zero pay. Fast forward and she is now a band 6 nurse on a busy nhs ward doing 13 hour day and 12 hour night shifts, often gets verbally abused by patients but loves her job.
She gets free uniform but has to pay to park. Her salary is now 28k after 7 years.

DS, 21 decided uni wasn't for him and was lucky enough to be offered an apprenticeship straight from school. Got paid from day one and will be a qualified gas engineer in the summer. He has a permanent job lined up, he has free uniform including shoes, a phone, all paid for, a van, and an allowance to buy tools. His starting salary at age 21 will be 36k.
He works 8 hour days and admits a lot of time is spent in the van drinking tea waiting for the next job.
I love both my DC equally and am so glad they are in jobs they love but AIBU to think a nurse should surely earn more than a gas engineer?

Wow wondering why I bothered with a law degree... ...

Alsohuman · 20/02/2019 09:34

@IheartNiles, she certainly has, she’s at it on another thread right now. Only it’s the entire NHS over there.

JellyBaby666 · 20/02/2019 10:04

@Playmytune I'm not talking nonsense. I clearly stated I wasn't referring to extra shifts that you're asked to do to cover shortages - those I have been paid for, because I chose to do them. However my 10 years in the NHS I have never, ever, been paid for overtime for staying beyond the end of my shift or for not getting a break. Ever. I am speaking from personal experience, whereby you cannot just stop what you are doing and walk off.

I am very pleased your daughter can accrue time owing. That is probably department specific, it's never been my experience.

I'm a nurse and have worked mainly in the private sector and yes the money I'd generally better but the terms and conditions are not, I'm currently working with a local authority and nhs post and the pay tk rate is less but the sick pay, retirement and support package make it better. My 21 year old earns more than me as he landed a rather niche job, he helps his older sister more than I do financially as she's a student.

It's bonkers

I have been here for 15 years under various accounts and name changes and I can’t remember when I noticed this but yes, I completely agree.

I am also wondering about the comment about a law degree?

XingMing · 21/02/2019 21:09

I don't know that I'd expect a law degree to usher anyone in to riches, unless your specialism is commercial or corporate, with or without litigation. Give criminal and family a very wide berth if earning well matters to you, and standard conveyancing is also poorly paid.

Froggyface · 21/02/2019 22:59

Maybe she should go in to medical negligence as her opinion of nurses is so low? Wink

urkidding · 02/03/2019 08:43

The problem with nursing is that women hold other women back. The attitude is 'I suffered , and was badly paid when I was training, and so should you'. In other countries, nurses have acquired professional status and have a professional and knowledgeable ethos. Basically, the salaries would be higher if they all pulled together, and saw themselves as professionals instead of winging and whining. The Royal College of Nursing has the same power as any other professional organisation.

beanaseireann · 02/03/2019 09:15

What annoys me is that nursing is badly paid compared to to Marketing, PR and such like.
Good nurses are simply amazing.
