To only have £100 until 28th Feb

As the thread title says, I only have £100 until the 28th of February, when I get paid. I've paid all my bills, rent and travel for this month - the only thing I need to buy is about five more days worth of food (I have a load stocked up from a big shop earlier in the month, so I'm pretty much okay on that front). I live in London with my DP and we have no DC.

AIBU to think the next two weeks will be a struggle and also extremely boring?

OP posts:
FuzzyPuffling · 12/02/2019 19:24

Yikes. £100? I've got 20p. Want to send me a sub OP?

CaseofEllen · 12/02/2019 19:24

🙄

LuckyLou7 · 12/02/2019 19:24

@snowball28 she doesn't have children so half-term activities are hardly going to matter

I thought this was a begging thread...

Deadbudgie · 12/02/2019 19:29

People live to their income. If op is used to having say £500 at this time of the month of course she’ll be worried as she normally needs £400more to make it to the end of the month. If you only have £25 normally and suddenly had £100 you would feel rich as you would have £75 spare cash.

A man with a family to feed in a third world country would think those with £25 with a roof over their heads and clothes on their back, free healthcare we’re having a fucking laugh as he tries to feed his family for a year on that.

But the lonely rich man, with no friends or family, dying at a young age with cancer would probably be the poorest of all.

Be thankful for what you have. Your struggle is someone else’s aspiration

3out · 12/02/2019 19:29

‘The struggle is real’...except of course, it isn’t.

Popc0rn · 12/02/2019 19:30

I have £79 left to last until the 27th when I get paid, which I think is quite good and won't find a struggle/boring at all! But then I really doing things that are free/cheap, like walking, reading, going to the gym, hibernating with a film, cooking for friends or them cooking for me.

I'd have a ball if I lived in London town Grin:

I never get MN, and of course it's not a bloody hive mind, but even so, you can get threads like this, where OP is clearly going to be a bit strapped for a couple of weeks, then there'll be another money thread where if you're not able to overpay your mortgage by thousands every year, then put away hundreds of pounds a month and manage several foreign holidays, you're really doing something wrong.
OP, you'll be fine, even though things like the travel you've just noticed will inevitably crop up. But it won't be fun. On the rare occasions I go to London, I always feel as if I'm being legitimately mugged. It's not a cheap place to be in.

£100 is plenty if you are careful. You have paid your bills and have almost enough food. I am the same every month as my bills all go out the first week wiping out my bank, I then have to save for next months bills. I shop online which seems to save me around £30 a week on food (because I don’t pick up things I don’t need). I don’t think I have £100 to last the month but technically I don’t need to spend anything other than food. Just don’t go out, don’t order a take away and all is fine.

Sparklingbrook · 12/02/2019 19:33

Looking at what you have already covered you should be ok, just no going out.

Lumene · 12/02/2019 19:33

Mr Money Mustache is a good website for inspiration for great things to do with no or little money.

MSE moneysaving chatboards also worth a look.

clairemcnam · 12/02/2019 19:34

Of course I and others get that if you are used to having a lot of money, this is going to feel like deprivation. But if I was in OPs shoes I would maybe moan to my partner, but not to anyone else. As I have enough insight to realise that it would make me look like an idiot.

MyKingdomForACaramel · 12/02/2019 19:35

Everyone talking about all the “free things” you can do probably aren’t taking into account that travel costs around tenner (assuming you’re not in zone 1).

It’s not a lot of money tbf, but like many have pointed out, you’re not at risk of starving, but yes, it will be boring.

IveGotAlpen · 12/02/2019 19:37

My food shopping around ever 3 weeks is £100 for 2 adults and a baby. Because that's all I can afford. I have £1.94. To last me till next Monday. That will cover milk for the baby. And you are moaning cause you only have £100 for five days ?
I'd give anything to have that and find it quite offensive that you are moaning about it. I'd give anything to have a nice sum of £100 for five days.

snowball28 · 12/02/2019 19:37

@LuckyLou7 I know, I was just making a lighthearted comment about how rough half term will be for me with no pennies.

Redglitter · 12/02/2019 19:38

Oh my heart bleeds. I thought you were going to say you still had bills to pay. Ffs £100 disposable income to last a fortnight. Hardly skint!!

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 12/02/2019 19:38

How much is a travel card?

LuckyLou7 · 12/02/2019 19:38

How much is a bottle of white lightning in London?

£2.72

It's only £1.99 oop north Grin

OnNaturesCourse · 12/02/2019 19:38

Lucky you.

After bills, food, travel in our household of three we have literally nothing left... And thats with my DP working overtime.

Occasionally we have a little left over that we put away until we have a little pot to treat ourselves with. Lucky to have £5 left over so it takes a while to save up.

Bluerussian · 12/02/2019 19:43

Oh bless you, I remember being in same position many years ago - even less,

Wish I could help you girl, even another hundred would make a difference.

Do you have parents or family who can lend you some?

All I can say is things improve tremendously with time, That doesn't exactly help right now of course.

raeray · 12/02/2019 19:43

People are being a little harsh to OP I think.
The OP didn't say she has less money than everyone until end of the month, just that she has £100 which is tighter for her.

This comes from someone who has a lot less than £100 to last until end of month.

OP where in London are you? Supermarkets do some amazing reductions late on a Friday in business areas that'll be much less populated over the weekend - might be worth a look for some bargains to stretch budget!

Iggly · 12/02/2019 19:45

The cost of a travel card depends on which zones

Maybe this is a goady post by the likes of a DM journalist looking to take the piss out of “stereotypical” rich mumsnetters.

clairemcnam · 12/02/2019 19:46

The OP has a travelcard for work so can travel around some zones. So yes there will be places she can go for free.

NameChangeNugget · 12/02/2019 19:47

It’ll be tough OP but, you’ve got this
