To think a Marxist society would be an improvement

Lots of people are so anti corbyn but there are many forms of Marxism and many could be far better than the system we have now imo.

Obviously corbyn isn't looking to replicate venezuela, that's been horrendously managed for a long time and was always going to end badly

*The problem is that Marxism was used and abused by dictators and controlling regimes, Marx had some great ideas but. other than perhaps in Russia between the revolutions, they have never been put into practice.

I like the Star Trek version of Marxism, everyone working together for the betterment of society.

The world has enough resources for everyone to have a good life, it is the fact that these are horded by the rich that causes suffering.*

Exactly this, lots of the Marxist ideas were unfinished and have been developed on. I agree the star trek version is compelling.

It's a shame so many are so narrow minded here to think there is just one form of Marxism that would never work.

Ah yes. Star Trek. My go to resource on socioeconomic matters.
Love Star Trek btw.

OP,

Can't you see how you totally eradicated your own point about how Marxism could work when you immediately dismissed janitors.

You're a fan of Marxism and you couldn't get that right.

Downtroddenhousingass · 12/02/2019 14:02

How did I dismiss janitors? That was a paste from socialism 101.

To be honest this country wouldn't be Marxist if Corbyn was Prime Minister. Should he continue to do as he has done since taking over as leader of the Labour Party then party would decide policy, not him - even if that didn't tally with his own beliefs (see Brexit). The last manifesto was written by the Labour Party, not Jeremy Corbyn, and indeed contained policy he personally doesn't agree with. There's no way the entire party are that far left. Should he cease to consult with the party in the way he does now I don't see him lasting long as leader, he'd be out very fast.

Guide To Marxism

  1. Take Power
  2. Purge the Moderates
  3. Kill millions of people.
Walkingdeadfangirl · 12/02/2019 14:12

Marxism could work perfectly well, if only for one thing. Human beings.

So the ideal solution would be to get rid of humans and replace them with robots. The janitor & doctor will then be happy to earn nothing, work for free and we will have a Marxist utopia. 👌

Just need to figure out how to get rid of all the pesky humans. Confused

mummymeister · 12/02/2019 14:16

If labour get into power it wont be Corbyn in charge. It will be John McDonald and Momentum. They would follow the Venezuela model.

they would also "soak the rich" so of course the rich that could leave would and the "rich" that couldn't would be an ever diminishing group and the definition of "rich" would move down to anyone who works and anyone who owns their own home.

all theories look fantastic on paper. they don't take any account of real people and how they are and how they feel.

the only thing we know for certain is that one single theory or ideology never works on its own. nowhere is perfect because people aren't.

KissingInTheRain · 12/02/2019 14:17

Scandinavian countries aren’t remotely Marxist, or even socialist (as socialists use the term). At most they’re (mildly) moderated capitalist societies, depending which one you look at.

Marxist organisation of government has been a murderous disaster each and every time.

Gulags. Show trials. Killing fields. Cultural revolution. And many more examples of mass killing, torture and enforced misery besides.

safariboot · 12/02/2019 14:25

It used to be the norm to take a job and know which hours you would be working

Not so, not for everyone. Stuff like factory work and manual labour often worked on the basis of turn up in the morning and hope you get picked for work today. Little different from the zero-hours contracts nowadays.

The economy and society today are flawed but I don't think Marxism is the answer.

NotDavidTennant · 12/02/2019 14:35

The French system and Scandinavian are often seen as a form of revolutionalist Marxism

By whom?

I've never heard anyone describe the French and Scandinavian systems as Marxist, let alone 'revolutionalist' (whatever that means as I think you've just made up that word). Indeed, I suspect there are Marxists living in those countries who would be amazed to discover that they are already living under Marxism.

mimibunz · 12/02/2019 14:37

No.

StepLadders007 · 12/02/2019 14:38

I'm a laid back kind of person but if I ever thought there was a real chance of Marxism being introduced into the UK I would be fighting on the streets to prevent it.

StepLadders007 · 12/02/2019 14:39

I'm worried the OP is being radicalised.

Thesuzle · 12/02/2019 14:43

Ocean,
Humour me, but can you see parallels with the Government in 1984 and the EU - or is that just me?
Probably just me smile*

Unfortunately I live on other side of the world and have no experience with the EU. I just googled and read the goals and values of the EU and from what I read I can't see any similarities to George Well's 1984.

From what I understand of Brexit is that Britain is exiting the EU. When I read 1984 and how the world is divided into 3 super states Oceania, Eurasia, Eastasia as a result of ' the absorption of Europe by Russia and of the British Empire by the United States' it made me think of what is happening now with Brexit. I'm no expert nor have any experience on what is happening with that so I could be lacking in understanding. There are many parallels between the book and what is happening in the world. I only finished the book 2 days ago and still processing it.

StepLadders007 What did you think of the book? What parallels between the government in 1984 and the Eu do you observe?

I find myself in the odd situation of agreeing with @StepLadders007 on this.
Op, how old are you?

Tiscold · 12/02/2019 14:57

Sixth forms and schools haven't broken up yet have they?

StepLadders007 · 12/02/2019 15:04

I believe that Marxism is rife in our Universities, look at Identity Politics for example.

What does Identity Politics do? it helps a society tear itself apart.

Karl Marx would be proud.

TheRiverIsAComfort · 12/02/2019 15:52

I think Jeremy is a very gentle man, filled with care for others.

I hope that if Labour win an election, it will be he that is at the helm and, although he may not be able to introduce Marxism, I think he will usher in a golden age filled with respect and equality.

There is nothing wrong with that: a country filled with respect and equality led by a caring, thinking leader.

Downtroddenhousingass · 12/02/2019 15:54

Why the need to belittle? His critical analysis of capitalism raises some good points. There isn't one form of Marxist, it's a set of ideas that's been developed on. The current system is perfect?

OP posts:
Patroclus · 12/02/2019 16:07

Despite the OP, Venezuela is an idiotic example and always shows up the ignorance of the person saying it. Are the conditions, industry, environment, culture and diplomatic in any way comparable with the UK?

The UK's best government was it only socialist one, in 1945. As people often say, it was also 'more methodist than marxist'. Extremely ambitious despite what had just gone on. Economic policies which put british people first, not politician's mates.

OP have a read of Orwell's 'Why I Write'. Any party which ran with his simple ideas in there as a manifesto would get my vote. Please dont get all american and lump alll politics to the left of George Bush as communism. Simple democratic socialism is very different- lower the wage gap, properly regulated, reasonable trade unions, progressive tax system and support for small business.

If capitalism goes on forever as it is, the environmrnet is finished and then we are finished. People voting on the basis of wanting their children to be able to afford 3 nice cars, think about it please, its perhaps already too late.

Jeremy is a useless twat.
