AIBU to think some posters on here lie?

This leads on from the drinking thread. Yes, when my daughter was a baby I barely drank but she’s now 12 so I don’t think twice about smashing a bottle of wine on a Friday or Saturday night.

Obviously if she was ill it would be a different story.

When she was at junior school her pack up regularly included Pom bears or the the Aldi equivalent. And, every now and again we have dinner which consists of freezer tapas or a beige platter (chips/goujons etc). We even sometimes have said platter in front of the tv.

I also swear inadvertently in front of her and I don’t use my recycling bins properly.

Sometimes when I read things on here I think I must be the worst mother in the world. AIBU to think I am normal? Are there others out there like me?

I'd say there are people who shower multiple times a day. I do think these people must be living in a constant state of angst. Especially if they think not doing it makes someone vile.

On top of elaboration of the truth and outright lying, I'm fairly sure there's people who read certain post and think it's lies because the reader has there own insecurities and feel don't like how the post makes them feel.

Such as drink threads. Someone is drinkng two bottles of wine a night reads another poster drinks rarely. They might feel this is either gloating or smug because they can't just drink occasionally no matter how hard they try. Or they might just decide it's a lie so their situation is normal.

(I chose drink as I've been on both sides!)

tomhazard · 10/02/2019 08:54

I also find it unbelievable how many people are No Contact with close family members such as mums and siblings.
I cannot think of one person I know who has zero contact with someone like this: even those who have difficult relationships have some contact.

derxa · 10/02/2019 09:04

I drink like a fish.

evaperonspoodle · 10/02/2019 09:09

I hope think the holiday threads are a tad embellished. Everyone goes on at least 5 holidays per year and each one is circa £10k as the OP 'prioritises holidays'. Anyone who asks how they afford it is told they just need to cut back in other areas. No one on these threads ever goes to Haven or AI or a resort, it's all road trip through Rocky Mountains or a scuba holiday in Seychelles.

I came across a Reddit thread where some people keep tabs on certain posters lies. There was a show me your bedroom thread and a poster had actually taken the image from a well known 5* hotel in Paris, as well as lots of other things.

The recent thread about MC dc looking scruffy really brought out the climbers on MN. Every poster was boasting about how scruffy and dirty their dc were, with blackened finger nails and knots in their hair Hmm

Knittedfairies · 10/02/2019 09:25

One of the (smaller) fibs here is the I-spat-my-coffee-over-the-keyboard one. Of course you did.

LemonTT · 10/02/2019 09:26

I think Easyandy makes a good point about the toxic bullshit “support” on threads. This sadly happens when the OP bats away all reasonable suggestions and sanity leaves the thread. The OP gets to run riot with a delusional version of events to the cheers of equally delusional PPs. Who then get to validate their mad opinion because it’s based on what they read on here.

I’m very🤔 about poll type threads. Primarily because they are skewed anyway, it’s a biased sample, it’s anonymous and an excuse for people to push an agenda. But they encourage people to out themselves. Strange how detail changes always makes their lives wealthier and more perfect. One notorious blagger gave away far too much about her “gilded” life and complains and wonders why she (and her family ffs) got doxed elsewhere. Maybe she and those like her need to think about why they continue to boast and post details about themselves that help no one and no situation.

I still find it appalling that any serious professional would offer advice on a forum. Maybe a fact or two if you had too. But advice, really ?

I do believe there are people out there that live a completely different way to me and make my eyes roll, I'm unlikely to put my experience on a thread like that because it frankly isn't worth the "OMG I don't touch alcohol until my grandchildren have graduated university how could you DO that?" responses, my eyes would ache too much. I do like a little browse and giggle though :) it's just a bit exasperating being the "other" voice on a thread sometimes, I have to be in the mood lol so I think it can skew a thread if others feel that way too.

DerelictWreck · 10/02/2019 09:36

It's all so subjective though. I could pop on a drinking thread and honestly say that most weeks/months I don't have any alcohol. But I'm not lying or being 'worthy', I'm just not adding that when I do drink at occasions and nights out I binge drink and I get hammered! Plus drinking might not be my vice, but you should see the amount of sugar I eat. But the OP didn't ask any of that, so my answer to 'how much have you drunk this day/week/month' might honestly be 'nothing'.

Rubusfruticosus · 10/02/2019 09:37

I will tell the truth, except to protect mine and my dc's privacy.

We will have a couple of dinners a week of crumbed chicken or fish out of the freezer, but in a wrap with half a plate of salad. Or half a pizza each with salad. On the sofa with book or electronic device, or while watching Netflix.

I use my recycling bin correctly as far as I'm aware.

Swear regularly in front of dc.

Drink up to four units when responsible for my dc, I need to be able at least pass as sober in an emergency. I see drinking too much when responsible for dc as worse than leaving dc home alone at night with a sober parent at the other end of the phone.

I think most parents are not perfect but not terrible either.

MrsWillGardner · 10/02/2019 09:39

You’re normal.

HTH!!

evaperonspoodle · 10/02/2019 09:48

I know a mum-friend who is building up an IG following and it is hilarious to watch as she is portraying her lifestyle as oh so middle class dahling, which couldn't be further from the truth. I do wonder if she genuinely believes it or if she's inwardly cringing.

PortiaCastis · 10/02/2019 10:00

There's changing details and then there's the attention seeking bollocks like I'm in an ambulance being blue lighted to hospital as I'm dying but I'm still able to whip out my phone get a signal and post on here how my dying is far far worse than anyone else's dying
Yeah ok luvvie

Sparklingbrook · 10/02/2019 10:06

I take most of the stuff on here with a pinch of salt TBH.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 10/02/2019 10:31

I tell the truth

Ive done most if the things in the OP though

I didnt have a hot drink around for about 8 years because i was too worried about them scalding themselves

That probably sounds like a lie Grin but people are weird

nakedscientist · 10/02/2019 10:36

Interesting thread.

I am intrigued by people's opinions which I assume they are less likely to lie about. I don't suppose " I hate London" posters really think it's the best! However, anecdote is often used instead of evidence which can really skew arguments.

Posters always ask if something is a reverse, but I've never actually seen one.

I tend to take people at face value in life and on here. If they say something then they have to be prepared to defend it.

I remain unmoved by claims of perfect lives and was pretty amazed by that bedroom thread!

But posters are fantastic with women in real trouble in their relationships and I think MNers should be proud of this.

Mysterian · 10/02/2019 10:36

Nobody ever lies on here. I certainly don't lie. It would seriously jeopardise my role as leader of The Venusian Republic.

paintinmyhairAgain · 10/02/2019 10:40

i often wonder how many mners actually have the degrees / studying for that they claim to have. sometimes the posts come across as a bit porky pie- ish. 'i've have 4 dc, work a 70 hour week and i'm studying for my third masters degree, do i have to really go to my twatish cousins wedding, what excuse would you give ? yeah right.

ashtrayheart · 10/02/2019 10:45

Exaggeration is demonstrated by people describing other people’s posts and threads too 🤷‍♀️

Monday55 · 10/02/2019 10:48

MN has definitely proven that 90% of all children have SN.

derxa · 10/02/2019 10:50

'I have anxiety'. That does my head in because everyone suffers from anxiety at one point or another. It's part of the human condition.

woollyheart · 10/02/2019 10:55

People lie to doctors when asked how much they drink. Some might do this deliberately because they don't want to be told off. Others really don't realise how much alcohol they take and under estimate.

They will do the same here.

Ifangyow · 10/02/2019 11:51

I think most do it for two reasons.
The first to ' fit in '
The second to prevent being attacked.
If you say anything that goes against the general contentious then it's guaranteed that the others are going to come after you with pitchforks and torches.
Example. Poster writes ' on a Saturday we drop the kids off at my parents after a KFC tea, the youngest is 3 months old and bottle fed. Me and my OH then get ready and go into town clubbing and getting pissed out of our heads till 05.00 when we go home and fall into bed. When we wake up later we have wild sex before showering and going to a transport cafe for a full English on the way to collect the kids.
Foookin Hell. Imagine the reaction to that from the outraged mnetters??
So instead the poster will probably write ' on the occasional Saturday evening, my parents babysit our children while me and OH have a rare evening out. The children have already had their evening meal and bath prior to my parents arriving. I always leave clear instructions which my mother follows.
Me and my OH usually go for a nice meal at a nice restaurant and share a bottle of wine before heading home no later than 23.00. We usually sleep a little later on a Sunday morning, when we then get up and make the children a healthy breakfast with home grown berries before walking to church.
The reaction to that is going to be much softer than scenario A.

Personally I prefer scenario A because I can relate to it. 😂

I am a normal parent. I have a damn good laugh at some of the tripe posted on here. I think some people work hard to build up an image. Lunchboxes/drinking/mothering threads don’t interest me much because I have no strong feelings. So the answers on those threads are probably skewed towards those perfect parents who do!
