To go grey?

Mid 30s and I just feel too young to be this grey! Currently as soon as the roots appear and my mother starts looking back at me in the mirror I quickly dye it.

But it would be so liberating to ditch the dye and let it go natural...I see women with lovely long grey hair but am I too young/ not cool or brave enough to pull it off? Will I look much older than I am? (I have otherwise dark hair and dark brows, so the greys really show!)

Has anyone taken the plunge?!

But see how all your examples are women with grey hair, men with grey hair are silver foxes, George Clooney-esque. Total misogyny.

picklemepopcorn · 08/02/2019 18:42

Grey is looking really good on young women at the moment. Perhaps because it is unapologetic.
When grey hair is worn unstyled and with no make up, it's a different look but dying hair darker or blonde doesn't fix that!
Styled hair, makeup, smart clothes- grey hair looks great.

slcol · 08/02/2019 18:43

That's the rub...young women dying hair grey is cool, women letting their hair go grey naturally...not cool. Women shouldn't age. 🤷

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 08/02/2019 18:43

I think it depends on your overall look to whether you look good or not personally. I know quite a few women with grey hair and some of them look amazing and others not so much.

OneStepSideways · 08/02/2019 18:46

slcol I can't think of any examples of grey haired men. Either I haven't noticed them or men's hair doesn't really feature in stereotypes/films/lit? Perhaps because a lot of men go bald instead, there's less emphasis on hair?

Cocolepew · 08/02/2019 18:51

I've seen plenty of men with grey hair who look nothing like a silver foxes Hmm they don't automatically become attractive when they go grey.
I've seen plenty of women with grey hair who don't look how I would want to look like. But that also goes for women who dye or have natural coloured hair.
You can't like everyones look, but it's none of my business.
People are free to look like how they want.
I would never be so rude to comment or argue with them to change because I think I know better.
That's just bizarre.

slcol · 08/02/2019 18:51

I'm only going on what posters have talked about on here tbh, about how men (all men apparently) suit grey hair while women (again, all women) don't. 🤷

ILikeyourHairyHands · 08/02/2019 18:53

I think you're right OneStep, I was at a smart restaurant at lunch today for a meeting and I was the only woman there with visibly naturally grey hair.

From the attitudes shown on this thread it's obviously seen as a mad subversive act just to have your own hair colour as a woman, which, when examined on any level is utterly bonkers. It's madness that women are in some way 'not allowed' or seen as somehow lesser or letting the side down if they present as they are (as evidenced by newnames bizarre vitriol).

And we buy into that shit, we let the world sell us products that mould us into what we're told we should be. I know lots of beautiful women, and the essence of that beauty is an absolute knowledge of their place in the world and their confidence. Not the fact they've bought into the prevailing idea of what beauty should be.

crispysausagerolls · 08/02/2019 18:56

likehairyhands

You are sooooooo beautiful and look extremely young!!!!

maggieandhopey

Point taken!

RockyFlintstone · 08/02/2019 18:58

It's not 'misogynistic' to state a fact. And it's nothing to do with 'having expectations of women that you do not expect of men'. What a load of guff. It's just a fact that men (especially under 50,) suit grey hair better than women...

Why do you think men suit grey hair better than women?

newnameforthis7 · 08/02/2019 18:59

@Ilikeyourhairyhands

what is wrong with looking one's age?'

There is nothing wrong with looking your age, and I never said there was! Did you actually bother to read my posts properly, or are you just cherry picking the bits that suit?!

I said, I don't care about looking my age, but why would I want to look OLDER?

And I am sorry but your hair does NOT look grey on that pic. (From 17.55.) It just looks blonde.

@crispysausagerolls

Scared to admit it newname, but I agree with you.

Grin

I understand you being scared to admit you agree though, because anyone who DARES to have an opinion that goes against the majority gets accused of being horrible, gets yelled at, and gets threatened (although the offending post has been removed now.) In addition, people even stoop as low as to pick apart peoples posting styles when they realise they are losing the argument.....

So I put some words in upper case and put 3 exclamation marks,

BIG!!! FUCKING!!! DEAL!!!

Especially for @Maggieandhopey........ Have 12 !!!!!!!!!!!! Grin

@slcol

.......young women dying hair grey is cool, women letting their hair go grey naturally...not cool. Women shouldn't age. 🤷

No-one said women shouldn't age. Do you have comprehension problems? Or are YOU cherry picking bits to suit your argument too?!

What has been said (by me and a few others) is that men (under 50) suit their grey hair growing through naturally, than women in the same age group do. Sorry, they just do.

newnameforthis7 · 08/02/2019 19:02

@RockyFlintstone

Why do you think men suit grey hair better than women?

The same reason as men suit a moustache better than women!

Cocolepew · 08/02/2019 19:02

…

To go grey?
To go grey?
RockyFlintstone · 08/02/2019 19:04

The same reason as men suit a moustache better than women!

Which is...?

Anyway, what has facial hair got to do with the colour of the hair on your head? Confused

newnameforthis7 · 08/02/2019 19:07

Big deal coco. We can ALL play that game.

To go grey?
To go grey?
newnameforthis7 · 08/02/2019 19:12

Ryan Reynolds is just out of his 30's and looks amazing natural grey.

Many actors let their hair go grey at a younger age, and look good.

There is a reason ACTRESSES don't do the same.

And no it's NOT misogyny. It's because they don't look as good.

To go grey?
ILikeyourHairyHands · 08/02/2019 19:14

Well newname my point is, my hair is grey, it's the slightly 'yellow' grey that was said up-thread is dreadful. My younger hair was very dark brunette. This is now my natural grey colour, a mix of brunette, some silver and some yellowy grey. That's grey hair doing what it does, there's no need to apologise.

You seem to be angry at women looking older than they should for some reason. Why does it even matter to you? No-one's keeping you from the dye if that's what you choose.

MargotLovedTom1 · 08/02/2019 19:17

OneStepSideways grey has also been the biggest trend in home decoration over the last ten years though. Although I've never understood it - why paint your walls the same miserable colour British skies are 80% of the year?

For me, I colour my hair brown because it makes look so much more vibrant. When it was grey it was a drab steely grey and did fuck all for my warm complexion or hazel eyes. It looked shit. Yes, it can be a faff with the upkeep but I'm not doing it every day, and I'd rather the faff every few weeks than the feeling of deflation every day when I looked in the mirror at a washed out, grey haired me.

newnameforthis7 · 08/02/2019 19:17

I am bored with this thread now anyway, so I'm out.

Ta ra......

slcol · 08/02/2019 19:18

🤦😂

Cocolepew · 08/02/2019 19:18

That's the point ffs, some people suit it and some don't, it doesn't matter what sex they are. The same as any colour hair. Obviously a model is going to look better no matter what sex because they are, they were probably attractive to start with, they are made up, lit better and photo shopped.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 08/02/2019 19:18

And if you don't think you have internalised misogyny I would advise sitting down in a dark and quiet room and asking yourself why you don't think an intrinsically attractive woman looks as good as an intrinsically attractive man when they have the same hair colour, if all other things are equal.

RockyFlintstone · 08/02/2019 19:19

And no it's NOT misogyny. It's because they don't look as good.

Why don't they look as good, you still haven't answered that? It's just hair colour after all.

MargotLovedTom1 · 08/02/2019 19:20

Also MaggieandHopey the OP started the thread to explore opinions on and reactions to grey hair so it's a bit harsh to say NewName was out of order to give her input, simply because it was negative.

Cautionsharpblade · 08/02/2019 19:22

I saw a woman in the supermarket the other day who had thick silver grey curly hair about shoulder length. It looked so lovely I wanted to tell her but I was too shy. She looked maybe about 40.
