9 year old daughter told to wear sports bra/crop top

movinonup · 06/02/2019 10:29

DD came to me last night saying that she needed a sports bra or crop top for P.E in the future as the teacher had told this to a group of girls who had been doing gymnastics and their tshirts had fallen down when doing handstands .

I can only assume this is to cover up their 9 year old nipples for fear of...........what exactly?

Are the boys to cover their nipples also?

AIBU to be cross about this?

It's freezing why weren't they all boys and girls wearing vests? I'm 34 and wear a vest in winter

Magenta82 · 06/02/2019 17:06

Male PE teachers need to protect themselves.

Telling 9 year olds to wear sports bras is way creepier than letting children be children.

JacquesHammer · 06/02/2019 17:08

also get them a crop top for PE. shirts never stay tucked in

Where are you all buying these tops that don’t stay tucked in?!

DD managed 9 years of PE, two different types of PE shirt (generic supermarket and then school uniform one) and they stay tucked in.

The societal norm is covered by the PE shirt. A girl shouldn’t be forced to wear a crop top to protect a PE teacher Confused

SoupDragon · 06/02/2019 17:12

Male PE teachers need to protect themselves.

  1. what from? Violent attacks by the pre-pubescent nipples?
  2. was it a Male teacher?
melissasummerfield · 06/02/2019 17:12

Im suprised shes not wearing a vest anyway, its flipping freezing! ( misses the point completely )

movinonup · 06/02/2019 17:12

@JasperKarat I can barely convince my two to wear a jumper over their school shirt never mind a vest underneath it. :)
They both run very hot, DS came home with his jacket in his bag the other day...it was -5.

I know it's not a laughing matter, but your comment creased me up @SoupDragon 😂

RiverTam · 06/02/2019 17:15

DD hasn't worn a vest this winter at all, just a long sleeved T shirt (sometimes) and some kind of hoodie or fleece. Vests appeared to have been demoted to summer night wear.

JacquesHammer · 06/02/2019 17:22

Mine never wore a vest once she was out of baby popper vests.

School shirt, pinafore, cardigan rendered them unnecessary!

movinonup · 06/02/2019 17:22

@SoupDragon

  1. Well said
  2. No it was a female.

@Yura WTAF?!?

Male PE teachers need to protect themselves.

From what Hmm

Let me tell you, from fucking idiots. That's what they need protected from. Idiots.

ambereeree · 06/02/2019 17:26

Why didn't the teacher send a letter to parents rather than telling a select group. It's all a bit weird really.

Loftyswops988 · 06/02/2019 17:26

In two minds over this one. I don't think 9 year old flat chested girls need to cover up, it should be a choice, but then maybe I think the teacher is just trying to prepare them. In a years time it is likely one or two of them at least will need some support for sports

Papermover · 06/02/2019 17:28

DDs PE teacher is a lesbian. Does she need to be protected from breast buds too?

2birds1stone · 06/02/2019 17:44

Why aren't they wearing leotards l? Or is this gymnastics within the pe class?

IncrediblySadToo · 06/02/2019 17:49

It is not the teachers place - at all.

Like you, I’d be pissed off that she was now self conscious where she wasn’t before.

DC, flat as an ironing board, asked for some in Y7, so I bought some, she wore them for a bit but not for long, she couldn’t see the point 🤣 Y8 and she still makes an ironing board look curvy & still doesn’t wear anything under her school shirt.

It’s up to the individual child to make that choice. Not the teacher.

I wish one of the girls had asked how wearing a crop top or bra would stop their t-shirt ending up around their necks...

movinonup · 06/02/2019 17:51

It's gymnastics within P.E class *2birds1stone

This thread has reminded me to ask dd1 (9) if she wants a crop top.

wheelygo · 06/02/2019 19:01

I developed really very early and was left by my mum to tell her when I wanted to start wearing bras. She also was unaware of sports bras, and I ended up leaving it too long without, and was left humiliated when a girl in my class made a nasty comment.

There's a fine line and I don't see any problem with suggesting that they get into the habit of wearing a crop top before they need actual support, it will just help the transition.

Zoflorabore · 06/02/2019 19:15

Like I said earlier in the thread, my year 3 dd wears vests mainly but has crop tops too. She said that all of the girls wear something and a handful of the boys wear a vest too.

I've always assumed most little girls wear vests!

Yura · 06/02/2019 19:27

@SoupDragon protect themselves from parents who are complaining about a male teacher seeing their child’s exposed chest, or at their bum when they do a handstand in a skirt with no pants on. yes, ig happens, blame a couple of idiot parents for the rules but bot the teacher

Yura · 06/02/2019 19:32

@Bryjam yes, sime parents are idiots. child wears no pants but does handstands while wearing a skirt. parent goes in about a male teacher (on playground duty) staying where he could see her daughters bum. a bit more extreme than chest on show, but it only takes one idiot parent to create massive problems for a teacher

NaturalBornWoman · 06/02/2019 19:32

What is the point of a crop top or bralet other than to cover the nipples? No support, not extra warmth as doesn't cover most of the torso. Just a garment which has been invented to cover the bra area for girls not yet in need of a bra. So why? I'd have been fuming OP if anyone had suggested my prepubescent daughter should cover her body in shame. Fuck that.

Bryjam · 06/02/2019 19:37

No. Some people, I was, and still am, looking at you, are idiots.

This is nothing to do with pants so let's ignore that bit and perhaps you could explain why you think Male teachers need protecting from 9yo children?

SoupDragon · 06/02/2019 19:45

parents who are complaining about a male teacher seeing their child’s exposed chest

Yeah... any parent who is that prudish would put their child in a vest.

And it's irrelevant in this instance a the teacher is not Male.
