Listening to Radio 4 at 12:00 today. Programme called The Unbelievable Truth, panellists trying to get 3 truths mixed with ridiculous lies past each other. At the end DM,who has always appeared benign, says which are which. One 'truth' was that wolf packs are lead by the chief sexual predator, fine. Then the foul mouthed fool added 'so are cubs' and by the sound of it a panellist or three tittered.
What a nasty double meaning. Yuk, yuk and yuk.
How dare he insult Scout and Cub leaders who have put up with enough? They are voluntary and give their time to making it possible for kids to have out of school activities and learn first aid and other useful skills.
I hope the BBC make him apologise loud and clear. A money contribution would be good too. Or could he be sued for slander.
I'm upset that a man like that makes grubby fun of people willing to help kids on a regular basis.

OP posts:

I didn't laugh because I don't find jokes about child abuse funny

This is my reaction too. Don't like watching sexual assault in films or theatre either.

BartonHollow · 03/02/2019 19:33

YABU OP

and really rather precious and cringeworthy

iklboo · 03/02/2019 19:33

Is that you Victoria? Grin

Usuallyinthemiddle · 03/02/2019 19:34

Oh, dear Lord. Really?

MortyVicar · 03/02/2019 19:35

There are rumours - based on circumstantial evidence only but not denied by the Scout Association - that B-P himself was suspect.

SilverySurfer · 03/02/2019 19:37

I can only assume from the OP's over-reaction that they are a cub leader.

ApocalypseNowt · 03/02/2019 19:40

Opened this thread to check that David Mitchell wasn't actually a terrible person - phew! He is still fine in my book.

OP - as others have pointed out you are confusing the subject and target of the joke.

Subject: cub/scout leaders
Target: paedophiles

HTH.

longwayoff · 03/02/2019 19:40

David Mitchell is an actor who uses comedy in his work. You are free to find him unfunny and perhaps offensive. I find him acute and amusing and am not offended, neither on my own behalf not that of cub and scout leaders. Many of whom are fine upstanding citizens, some of whom are not. As we have read very recently.

DragonKiller · 03/02/2019 19:41

And here's me coming on here thinking that he might have dropped the C-bomb.

Amanduh · 03/02/2019 19:43

What a massive over reaction

Caticorn · 03/02/2019 19:47

Going off the point a little....the reason it is seen as 'in the past' is because now a safeguarding measures are put in place to ensure that abuse wouldn't go unnoticed.
I've been in scouting for about 7 years...in that time I've never been alone with one of the children or young people. Rules are strict, and procedures are in place for whistle blowing if leaders aren't following those rules.

Same goes for decent churches...at our church no children would ever be in a situation where they are alone with one of the priests... children's liturgy is done in sight of parents, alter servers are in groups and nearly always within sight of the congregation.

I'm not saying abuse doesn't happen, of course it does, in all walks of life...but the vast majority of adults in these organisations are working hard to ensure it doesn't happen on our watch.

Blatherskite · 03/02/2019 19:47

The scouts have been a way for a grimy sort of man to get too close to small boys ever since Baden Powell set the movement up!

GoFiguire · 03/02/2019 19:50

I don’t understand.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 03/02/2019 19:51

Uh huh. Yeah, let’s ban jokes, whilst letting perpetrators get away with it. That’s the way to go. ‘Joking’ about this stuff is a perfectly subversive way of disapproving and highlighting issues.

cricketmum84 · 03/02/2019 19:52

Sorry it's a joke. And quite an apt one at that.

Is there a reason it's got you so wound up??

Minglemangle · 03/02/2019 19:52

Total over over reaction to a joke. Unfortunately being a scout master was one of the ways that perverts accesses kids when I was young (I’m in my 40s).

BIgBagofJelly · 03/02/2019 19:54

I'm a club leader and can't be bothered to care too much.

Mushroomsarehorrible · 03/02/2019 19:54

Build a bridge and get over yourself

TheFaerieQueene · 03/02/2019 19:55

🤣

WitchenKitch · 03/02/2019 19:56

YABU and it is so refreshing to see so many people saying so. It makes me hopeful that the tide may be turning on the fad for Knee-jerk Outrage.

Ribbonsonabox · 03/02/2019 19:58

... I laughed.

thegreatbeyond · 03/02/2019 20:23

Indeed. Let's go back to the days where nobody mentioned it, because that's almost like it didn't happen...yeah. Oh, wait...

everythingisginandroses · 03/02/2019 20:31

David Mitchell is a bore.

Consolidatedyourloins · 03/02/2019 20:33

I thought you were going to say DM has been accused of rape. 🙄

I'm guess you aren't coming back as you had your arse handed to you.

cariadlet · 03/02/2019 20:34

I opened the thread to see what he'd done and so relieved that it was just a lazy joke. I was worried that he'd done something really horrible like had an affair.
