Listening to Radio 4 at 12:00 today. Programme called The Unbelievable Truth, panellists trying to get 3 truths mixed with ridiculous lies past each other. At the end DM,who has always appeared benign, says which are which. One 'truth' was that wolf packs are lead by the chief sexual predator, fine. Then the foul mouthed fool added 'so are cubs' and by the sound of it a panellist or three tittered.
What a nasty double meaning. Yuk, yuk and yuk.
How dare he insult Scout and Cub leaders who have put up with enough? They are voluntary and give their time to making it possible for kids to have out of school activities and learn first aid and other useful skills.
I hope the BBC make him apologise loud and clear. A money contribution would be good too. Or could he be sued for slander.
I'm upset that a man like that makes grubby fun of people willing to help kids on a regular basis.

It’s a joke

And are we to pretend that sexual predators are not attracted to certain jobs and positions where they are in a position to easily manipulate those around them and abuse children

SaturdayNext · 04/02/2019 06:49

ADropofReality, if it were clear that the joke about gay people was purely intended as a joke, I'm sure Stephen Fry would defend to the hilt the right of the individual concern to make it.

Why can't a joke highlight a social problem? He did not belittle the experience of the children. He solely focused on the leadership problems.

Pk37 · 04/02/2019 07:21

Sheesh...

ShowOfHands · 04/02/2019 09:52

I live just down the road from Mr Fry and see him regularly. I'll ask him next time I see him.

OhDearGodLookAtThisMess · 04/02/2019 10:03

Why would you think that him giving money would compensate in any way for the offence you've taken?

DGRossetti · 04/02/2019 10:45

A keen viewer of QI would know that in it's run, Mr. Fry was known to make jokes about homosexuals himself, as well as daring to laugh at jokes made by others about homosexuality.

Strugglingtodomybest · 04/02/2019 11:20

They[don’t know who “they” were]ought to round up all the gays, put them on an island somewhere, and have the RAF use them for target practice.

But this isn't a joke? He may have said it in a joking manner, but it's not actually a joke is it? The example in the OP is an actual joke so it's completely different (and funny).

LakieLady · 04/02/2019 11:43

There are rumours - based on circumstantial evidence only but not denied by the Scout Association - that B-P himself was suspect.

Tbh, no-one today would publish a book called "Scouting For Boys", would they?

PBo83 · 04/02/2019 11:43

I'm very much in the 'It's a joke' camp.

MikeUniformMike · 04/02/2019 12:24

Not RTFT but it was probably the scripwriters not DM. Unless he is the scriptwriter.

As it happens, I turned out to be a teacher, and I'm an adult instructor for the ACF. I can promise you that these days the background checks are, happily, far more stringent. So yes, back then there were far more nonces. Now there aren't.

Sadly not the case with my son's cub leader.

This was only two years ago.

The wonderful and longstanding group of leaders had been wanting to retire for some time but kept hanging on because there were no new volunteers coming forwards to run the pack.

Suddenly they announced that they had found two young and enthusiastic men who had come through the ranks of the scouting movement.

They had a phased handover and then took over fully.

They were useless to be honest. They couldn't control the kids and had zero personality. They were not my idea of positive make role models. One was socially inept and the other showed a serious lack of personal hygiene.

They lasted about six months and left very suddenly so the old leaders came back out of retirement.

It came out after one of them was arrested , charged and convicted of grooming 12 year old boys and downloading indecent images of children , that he had had a police record of doing the same thing 5 years earlier.

We tried to contact the senior area leaders to get to the bottom of why this wasn't picked up in the back ground checks but gave up in the end as the it was obviously all being swept under the carpet.

I removed my son as even though the original leaders had returned and were wonderful I had no faith in the senior leadership to protect the boys.

I am very much in the comedy should not be censored camp and that this is an example of some people over-reacting.

However, I do feel there is also an element of hypocrisy involved sometimes. For example, I'm almost certain that some of the people who defend the nice middle class intellectual Mr Mitchell would take the alternative view if the comment had been made by, say, someone like Jim Davidson.

Jim Davidson would never come out with something that funny.

Theres a massive difference between mitchell's or should i say dan gaster's, risque satire and a davidson's rasist and homophobic rants

I am currently listening to the interview again, and the response from the audience and the panel was actally a gasped ohhh then laughter rather than as the op suggests they all found it hilarious. Ie it was kind of anknowledged that it was a rather risque joke and close to the knuckle.

Gilead · 04/02/2019 15:58

Two points.
The Fry quote: taken out of context, yet again.
The Mitchell joke: Grow up.

Gina2012 · 04/02/2019 17:49

You sound a bit simple, OP.

I wondered this

He/she doesn't seem to have a grasp of current affairs nor how humour works

Nor a grasp of the adage 'he protests too much ' 🙃🙃🤪

Limensoda · 04/02/2019 17:54

It's a joke ffs.
If you take offence that's up to you.
