Disgusting David Mitchell

Listening to Radio 4 at 12:00 today. Programme called The Unbelievable Truth, panellists trying to get 3 truths mixed with ridiculous lies past each other. At the end DM,who has always appeared benign, says which are which. One 'truth' was that wolf packs are lead by the chief sexual predator, fine. Then the foul mouthed fool added 'so are cubs' and by the sound of it a panellist or three tittered.
What a nasty double meaning. Yuk, yuk and yuk.
How dare he insult Scout and Cub leaders who have put up with enough? They are voluntary and give their time to making it possible for kids to have out of school activities and learn first aid and other useful skills.
I hope the BBC make him apologise loud and clear. A money contribution would be good too. Or could he be sued for slander.
I'm upset that a man like that makes grubby fun of people willing to help kids on a regular basis.

As GreenThing and pp have mentioned, there is an element of truth in it. My DH is a CO at a maximum security prison and has read countless case files on pedos. It's always the same. They always had jobs or volunteered for anything involving close prolonged contact with kids. It may not be pretty, but it's the truth.

The fact is, not all of these organisations background check as well as they should
They do the same background check as anyone else, a DBS check. Same as for teachers, nurses, anyone working with potentially vulnerable people. These checks pick up convictions (and in the case of enhanced ones, as for people working with children, accusations). We can’t ban people from contact with children on any other basis, surely?

It's a bit of a cheap joke, given the strides Scouting organizations have made. But as well as the recent case in the news, it refers back to a time in Scouting history they really should be ashamed of, so it's not really the joke that's disgusting, is it?

My DFriend is a Social Worker and has not sent her DS to cubs etc for this reason.

It was a joke and is a bit funny.

He wasn't saying he doesn't think of highly of Scout leaders who put in a lot of effort. For all you know, he might wholly support Scouting.

I found it funny. Then again I can watch Ricky gervais be offensive and laugh a lot. The fact you are asking for money donations (a ridiculous trend recently) just shows what type of person you are. If you don’t find it funny, that’s okay. Let others enjoy things though, yeah?

My brothers scout leader had a very unhealthy interest in young boys, some of the things he did were disgusting and he should have gone to jail.

The joke has an element of truth in it and unfortunately groups that work with children will always attract people wanting easy access to children.

Just to say the only reason my husband is a leader is because of the lack of volunteers and my son is in the cubs and we didn’t want it to fold. He had to have an enhanced DBS and safeguarding training

It is a joke OP, perhaps not a very funny one.
20 years in child protection and I wouldn't be keen on my dc joining the scouts or if I'm fair the Catholic Church.
Child sex offenders are drawn to hierarchical organizations with easy access to dc. It doesn't mean it is a high risk but it is a risk.
