To think they shouldn’t be advertising that they’re stocking up for Brexit?

So with Brexit approaching, some people (including me) are concerned about the possibility of food shortages etc afterwards.

One of my Facebook friends has started posting photos on Facebook of them stocking up.

Photos of crates and crates filled with a variety of tinned food, dried food, UHT milk, bottled water and other drinks, toiletries, medicines etc.

With comments along the lines of “we’re stocking up for Brexit, we’ll be ok”

I think they’re daft.
Not about the stocking up, I’m buying in extra stuff just in case too - but I think it’s daft to be telling hundreds of people on Facebook.

If things get to the point where shelves are bare and they’re reliant on their stash of food, then there’s now loads of other people who know they’ve got loads of non-perishable food stashed. People who might be very hungry.

AIBU to think that telling everyone about your food hoarding is a really bad idea if you’re planning for possible food shortages?

I agree. I think a lot of people are secretly stockpiling just in case, but advertising it is stupid.

Racecardriver · 01/02/2019 17:24

Presumably they don’t actually believe that there will be serious shortages and are doing it for fun/attention. I don’t advertise where I keep my ‘run away stash’ because that would defeat the purpose.

OVAgroundWOMBlingfree · 01/02/2019 17:27

The first rule of prepping is don’t tell anyone you’re prepping.

themoomoo · 01/02/2019 17:28

yeah, cos it's going to be like the apocalypse with people smashing down neighbours' doors and shooting them to get their avocado.
Get a grip ffs

LoudBatPerson · 01/02/2019 17:28

They have broken the first rule of stocking up.preping.... but at least all your mutual friends will be at their door, not yours if things do go belly up Wink.

PositivelyPERF · 01/02/2019 17:35

I do discuss with some of my clients, but in a ‘I’ve just got a few days extra in and I would recommend they do the same’ way. In fact I’ve enough for a good while. I like to get people thinking about it and I’ve discovered that a very large percentage of my clients are doing the same. Many people here are taking it very seriously.

I don’t advertise to all and sundry because I don’t want to be robbed. After all, shops are robbed of their goods, so why wouldn’t a home with a lot of tinned foods, drinks, etc, be robbed.

Confusedbeetle · 01/02/2019 17:37

Best way to create shortages, and then you can blame Brexit, which will be the cause of the next global recession even though we have one coming anyway

arethereanyleftatall · 01/02/2019 17:38

It's a marketing dream for the producers of long life stuff.

I’m absolutely a remainer. Brexit is stupid. But I don’t think the worry is that there will be no food for people, the worry is there will not be the choice that people want and fresh food may be disrupted - but you can’t prep for the latter anyway. Ben and Jerry’s have confirmed they’re stockpiling so we’ll all be fine.

LoveWasAccidental · 01/02/2019 17:41

I feel the same way. Either people genuinely believe there will be food shortages necessitating stockpiling (personally I think this may well be the case) or they don't. If you genuinely think there will be food shortages to the extent that people are going to run out of food - do you think others will respect the fact that you've got food while they are going hungry?
"Oh, Janice down the road has a garage full of tins and my kids are crying because they're hungry, but oh well, I guess I should have stocked up. Bad luck me." Really?

Explain to me, how shopping and building up a store slowly, causes shortages. Have you seen any shortages in the shops yet? If there are shortages, it will be as a result of difficulties with supply and panic buying. Preppers aren’t panic buying.

Oysterbabe · 01/02/2019 17:41

Yanbu.

EmeraldShamrock · 01/02/2019 17:43

I sounds like Armageddon. I doubt masses will be breaking down their door to steal their food.
But who knows the outcome.
I haven't started to stockpile yet but if there is no deal, I think there'll be food shortages here and the UK.

themoomoo · 01/02/2019 17:43

POsitively* I don't think the word is "riled" more contemptuous of people who are so gullible.

ginghambox · 01/02/2019 17:43

FFS give it a fucking rest.

BowBeau · 01/02/2019 17:46

This. If you stockpile and the situation becomes dire, people will just rob you.

PositivelyPERF · 01/02/2019 17:48

If your in NI EmeraldShamrock, keep in mind, if there are any shortages in the uk, we will only get what’s left over. I know. I know. The thought that the UK might shit on the people of the North of Ireland is quite astonishing....oh hold on! 🤔 😒

I’m originally from a farming background and I know of one who supplies veg to one of the big supermarkets. When I was asking how he felt about it, he was saying that they’re expecting an increase in demand on local produce, but that’s no bloody help because so many of the people that helped pick it have already moved back to Europe.

bellinisurge · 01/02/2019 17:51

Prepping rule No 1. Don't tell anyone.

PositivelyPERF · 01/02/2019 17:51

Alright themoomoo, why are you so contemptuous of preppers? How are they impacting on your life? Why do you and ginghambox feel the need to give your well thought out counter argument.

ginghambox · 01/02/2019 17:54

Because this is a goady thread, designed to draw in the usual remainers.

bellinisurge · 01/02/2019 17:56

I'm both a Remain voter and a general prepper so it's like it was designed to goad me. Grinand yet I am unmoved.

JumpOrBePushed · 01/02/2019 17:56

I’d like to think that there’s no need to worry, but the way the government is handling things does not fill me with confidence.

I can’t really see how slowly stocking up causes food shortages either. I bought a few extra things during my grocery shop today and the shelves were still full of produce.

Anyway. I think if you’re considering food shortages seriously enough to be stockpiling, you should also be considering how people who haven’t got stockpiles might behave if their cupboards are bare and there’s no food in the shops.

I’ll only steal from brexiteers.

bellinisurge · 01/02/2019 18:01

Here you go in case anyone hasn't seen this. Apologies if you have - I wrote it long before the snow Grin
Imagine you are snowed in for three days. What will you and your family actually eat? Get freezer friendly and/or shelf stable versions of that. What are your hygiene needs - toothpaste, sanpro, shampoo etc. Make-up too if it makes you feel good.
Think about snacks and treats. And entertainment. Because being stuck indoors is boring.
Why 3 days? It's doable and storable and keeps you away from the shops while you suss out how things are locally. Want to do more? Plenty of advice on MN.
