To think they shouldn’t be advertising that they’re stocking up for Brexit?

So with Brexit approaching, some people (including me) are concerned about the possibility of food shortages etc afterwards.

One of my Facebook friends has started posting photos on Facebook of them stocking up.

Photos of crates and crates filled with a variety of tinned food, dried food, UHT milk, bottled water and other drinks, toiletries, medicines etc.

With comments along the lines of “we’re stocking up for Brexit, we’ll be ok”

I think they’re daft.
Not about the stocking up, I’m buying in extra stuff just in case too - but I think it’s daft to be telling hundreds of people on Facebook.

If things get to the point where shelves are bare and they’re reliant on their stash of food, then there’s now loads of other people who know they’ve got loads of non-perishable food stashed. People who might be very hungry.

AIBU to think that telling everyone about your food hoarding is a really bad idea if you’re planning for possible food shortages?

Because this is a goady thread, designed to draw in the usual remainers.

Ehh? 🤔

A thread about prepping is designed to draw in remainers, is no more goady that discussing shoes to draw in the fashion follows. I’m not feeling very goaded? are you feeling goaded?

themoomoo · 01/02/2019 18:03

Alright themoomoo, why are you so contemptuous of preppers? How are they impacting on your life
They don't impact on my life at all. I'm just slightly contemptuous of gullible people. The same as I am of flat earthers etc.
Preppers whoare just general preppers as w ay of life I'm all for. very sensible: people who think the country is going to descend into Mad max levels of violence and civil unrest on March 31st are frankly rather silly.

PositivelyPERF · 01/02/2019 18:04

I'm both a Remain voter and a general prepper so it's like it was designed to goad me. grinand yet I am unmoved.

Are you sure, bellinisurge? I can offer you a safe place, if you’re very upset. shifts cases of beans and puts cushions on top of peas, for a seat. 😁

Nomorechickens · 01/02/2019 18:06

There are plenty of people stockpiling. When I checked online last week, IKEA and Wilko were both out of stock of large plastic crates with lids.
I am just getting in a stock of essentials - tea, coffee, chocolate, olive oil, quinoa Grin

ginghambox · 01/02/2019 18:06

I’ll only steal from brexiteers.
Didnt take long.

bellinisurge · 01/02/2019 18:08

Nah @PositivelyPERF , I'm ok thanks Grin

PositivelyPERF · 01/02/2019 18:09

I really don’t see any panic on here, themoomoo. I see people hoping for the best, but putting away a few extra things in case of delays or shortages. That sounds very sensible to me. I’ve been a low level prepper for a number of years, but for different reasons. I will admit I’ve bright in extra in case of delays, but I call that smart. I think the unrealistic ones are those that are sticking their fingers in their ears and going ‘La la la’. 🙈🙉

Helmetbymidnight · 01/02/2019 18:09

Why so sad, brexiteers? Sad Sad

It’s going to be great - getting control back, sovereignty, democracy, making Britain great again, money pouring into the nhs etc etc

PositivelyPERF · 01/02/2019 18:10

It’s ok bellinisurge, I’ve forgotten where I’ve put the blindfold anyway, in case you’re a secret brexiteer. 🕵️‍♀️

hopelessatthinkingupusernames · 01/02/2019 18:11

If people buy extra now then it gives the supermarkets time to replenish before Brexit.

But yeah, bloody stupid to advertise your stash!

Oysterbabe · 01/02/2019 18:12

Except for not having the space or money I don't know why anyone wouldn't stock up a bit. There might not be shortages but there might so better to be prepared. Prices will more than likely go up so its just good financial sense no?

themoomoo · 01/02/2019 18:12

then there’s now loads of other people who know they’ve got loads of non-perishable food stashed. People who might be very hungry

People who might be very hungry

not a scaremongering, panic phrase at all then?

Siameasy · 01/02/2019 18:14

I’m feeling I need to stockpile olives. Fatty, filling and not native😩my olive tree has never delivered the goods despite last year’s summer.
I can’t see the great unwashed fighting over olives.
I’m cautious about possibly not being able to get some of my continental faves for a bit. Chorizo😭 canned tomatoes?
But I don’t think food will run out. Maybe people will have to eat less-not a bad thing. I often eat one meal a day so maybe practise fasting or start growing your own food if you really think it’ll be that bad.

themoomoo · 01/02/2019 18:14

Why so sad, brexiteers?
I'm tickety boo actually.
Had a lovely day, chilli is tasting exceptionally good and about to have a glass of wine. Feel mostly happy and contented with my life the vast majority of the time so really, no need to think I'm sad my love

JumpOrBePushed · 01/02/2019 18:16

themoomoo

I’m not seeing the harm in prepping in case Brexit goes bad.

If I stockpile food and everything’s ok, then I’ll end up looking a bit silly, but on the plus side, I won’t have to buy any more non-perishable food for a while.

If I stockpile food and we do have food shortages, then I can fall back on the stockpile and feed my family for a bit longer.

Frankly the risk of looking rather silly seems preferable to me.

Good, then don’t let the preppers worry you.

BusySnipingOnCallOfDuty · 01/02/2019 18:20

If we had the space, we would have stores saved up. But we don't. I wouldn't boast about it. My friend was just burgled last weekend. In a year, it'll be people raiding cupboards, not telly units 🙄

PositivelyPERF · 01/02/2019 18:20

Maybe people will have to eat less-not a bad thing. you do realise there are people going without to feed their children, already?

There’s no getting away from the fact that food prices will go up and there will be a hiccup (at least) in the selection of food available. This is going to impact on those on low income, the worst. Shortages of any sorts, will see a decrease in donations to the food banks. That’s very worrying.

P.s Siameasy, don’t forget the chickpeas. Fab for salads, warmed or to make hummus. Tempted to put my list on here, but I think those who are already irritated by preppers, will have a complete meltdown. 🤣

themoomoo · 01/02/2019 18:20

I've always had vast quantities of food in the house / outhouse anyway.
I think if you have dependants it's a little remiss not to.
bugger all to do with Brexit but I reckon we could easily go 3 or 4 months without having to leave the house. Food combinations may get a bit interesting towards the end but would mean the 2 tins of chestnut puree would finally get eaten ( 10 years old now)

themoomoo · 01/02/2019 18:23

I think if you have dependants it's a little remiss not to
excepting very skint/

bellinisurge · 01/02/2019 18:25

Obesity crisis in this country is complex. Yes, too many calories and not enough exercise is part of the problem. But to fix it you need a healthy balanced diet that is affordable and accessible and good mental health support.
Using Our personal reserves of fat is not going to help much.

PositivelyPERF · 01/02/2019 18:26

You’d be surprised where you can store stuff, BusySnipingOnCallOfDuty. I’m lucky I have a good sized house, so it’s not an issue, but my friend keeps cases of tinned soup, beans, spuds, peas, etc behind the kick boards in his tiny kitchen. He has health problems and doesn’t like crowds, so the thought of being in a crowded supermarket unnerves him.

bellinisurge · 01/02/2019 18:27

@themoomoo , it is not too late to buy a couple of extra tins as you can afford it. Panic buying is to be avoided at all costs. It's horrible to be in that situation and a lot of people can't afford it.
Jack Monroe, who I personally dislike, has a whole blog about it including suggestions for cooking from tins.

PositivelyPERF · 01/02/2019 18:29

Hang on themoomoo, you have a large store of food, yet you’re criticising preppers? By definition, you are a prepper! I’m very confused.

Ninoo25 · 01/02/2019 18:29

I’ve got a small stockpile and haven’t told anyone other than DH.
