To think they shouldn’t be advertising that they’re stocking up for Brexit?

So with Brexit approaching, some people (including me) are concerned about the possibility of food shortages etc afterwards.

One of my Facebook friends has started posting photos on Facebook of them stocking up.

Photos of crates and crates filled with a variety of tinned food, dried food, UHT milk, bottled water and other drinks, toiletries, medicines etc.

With comments along the lines of “we’re stocking up for Brexit, we’ll be ok”

I think they’re daft.
Not about the stocking up, I’m buying in extra stuff just in case too - but I think it’s daft to be telling hundreds of people on Facebook.

If things get to the point where shelves are bare and they’re reliant on their stash of food, then there’s now loads of other people who know they’ve got loads of non-perishable food stashed. People who might be very hungry.

AIBU to think that telling everyone about your food hoarding is a really bad idea if you’re planning for possible food shortages?

My mum and best mate know I'm prepping and they are prepping too. I've chatted to people in the shops about prepping but they don't know me or where I live Grin I've met a few fellow preppers in recent weeks. Bloody stupid to advertise the fact on Facebook!

bellinisurge · 01/02/2019 18:31

There go go @themoomoo , I don't like her but her list is useful
Versions of this as suit your budget are a good idea.

By the way, if you can manage to be a bit more resilient it means that emergency services can focus on people who need it. Not people in avoidable dramas.

PositivelyPERF · 01/02/2019 18:32

How does he view your prepping Ninoo25?

themoomoo · 01/02/2019 18:33

positively I'm criticising the people who are so panicked by brexit that they are stockpiling specifically for that.
Not that tricky to figure out

bellinisurge · 01/02/2019 18:33

@themoomoo who's panicking? You mean anyone discussing it on here?

PerverseConverse · 01/02/2019 18:34

@themoomoo so what are you prepping for if you have enough for 3-4 months??

PositivelyPERF · 01/02/2019 18:34

I’m not a fan of hers either, but not because of her cooking, bellinisurge, but she does have some good ideas. I believe she’s bringing out a book?

PerverseConverse · 01/02/2019 18:35

@bellinisurge please refer to @TheElementsSong and her Brexitannia Dictionary Grin

bellinisurge · 01/02/2019 18:35

Love @TheElementsSong too!

themoomoo · 01/02/2019 18:36

perverse I live in a very rural location with literally one road in and out of the nearest village. we often get snowed in and I've just gradually built up a surplus of food.
Wouldn't say I'm an active prepper, just always buy too much food"!

Smileymoon · 01/02/2019 18:36

I've got tons of cereal as it is fortified with vitamin and minerals and filling. Lots of coffee, pasta, tinned tomatoes and toiletries. I'm not telling anybody. It's not because I think we'll get burgled. It's because if I tell people I will have to share my stash with them if there are shortages or prices soar. We have 3 DC and the stockpile wouldn't last very long if I'm feeding friends' families, my family and DH's family. I may as well not bother stockpiling if m going to do that as it would disappear rapidly.

themoomoo · 01/02/2019 18:37

bellini the OP saying there will be hungry people with designs on their neighbours' food supplies seems pretty panicky no?

WineGummyBear · 01/02/2019 18:37

The supermarket delivery driver who delivered our stash a few days ago was really funny. It was clearly a preppers shop. All tinned/long life food. He said 'planning something big?' and we both mumbled 'nothing much. He must have such a laugh at preppers who won't admit they're prepping.

Typing this has made me realise... come the carnage the supermarket delivery drivers are the people who know where all the food is!

PositivelyPERF · 01/02/2019 18:37

I’ve now seen how well organised her lovely larder is and have even more reason to dislike her. #jealous #mylarderisatip

🤣 I have visions of them going out like a marauding gang, robbing all the houses.

lljkk · 01/02/2019 18:40

I can't buy into narrative that food will be so scarce very soon that we'll start stealing from neighbours. Pffft. That part I can ridicule.

nancy75 · 01/02/2019 18:40

I’ve got no problem with people stocking up on extra food - each to their own, however I find it pretty ridiculous to suggest that they need to keep it secret for fear of starving people breaking into their homes to steal food!
I voted remain, I think Brexit is a stupid thing to be doing but it’s not going to actually lead to Armageddon

PerverseConverse · 01/02/2019 18:40

I used to laugh at my neighbour who only did a big shop every 6 weeks or so and had several bottles of washing up liquid, flash spray, deodorant, shower gel, toothpaste, packs and packs of paracetamol and ibuprofen, big bags of sugar, jars and jars of sauces, and a 2 freezers fills of homemade chilli, mash, meat and fish. He lives alone and has absolutely no need for all these things but he just kept buying stuff whenever he shopped as he never checked what he'd got first or made a list. I used to roll my eyes and tease him but he'll be sorted in the event of no deal.

PositivelyPERF · 01/02/2019 18:46

For me, not about starvation lljkk, but the fact that many people will have a sizeable about of food in their homes, which could fetch quite a bit of money, if stolen. themoomoo has already said she has three months supply, so imagine if that got stolen. It would be very, very easy to sell. Someone won’t risk breaking 8bt9 your house to steal a tin of beans, but hundreds of pounds worth of food, is a different matter.

bellinisurge · 01/02/2019 18:48

It's a prepper thing not to tell anyone. Look, my priority is my household. It's not your job to feed them it's mine. If anyone is avoiding stocking up because they think other people will do it for them, they are arrogant and naive.
I will help people outside my immediate family who are useful to me. I won't help lazy feckers who rely on the generosity of other people when they can easily sort themselves out but are too lazy or too addled by the Brexit cult.

themoomoo · 01/02/2019 18:49

positively everyone round here has a good supply of food. Don't think we're going to be storming the neighbours!

nancy75 · 01/02/2019 18:51

3 months worth of food is quite large & heavy, people don’t break in to a house & steal big heavy stuff, they nick iPads & jewellery. Most thieves would be caught in the act moving 3 months worth of food shopping out of a house.

themoomoo · 01/02/2019 18:52

nancy unless I have 3 months worth of prawn crackers Grin

bellinisurge · 01/02/2019 18:52

Let's hope no one rocks up on your doorstep with a sob story.
Not everyone is you @themoomoo . Some people don't live in lovely well stocked communities full of live and joy.
