To think they shouldn’t be advertising that they’re stocking up for Brexit?

So with Brexit approaching, some people (including me) are concerned about the possibility of food shortages etc afterwards.

One of my Facebook friends has started posting photos on Facebook of them stocking up.

Photos of crates and crates filled with a variety of tinned food, dried food, UHT milk, bottled water and other drinks, toiletries, medicines etc.

With comments along the lines of “we’re stocking up for Brexit, we’ll be ok”

I think they’re daft.
Not about the stocking up, I’m buying in extra stuff just in case too - but I think it’s daft to be telling hundreds of people on Facebook.

If things get to the point where shelves are bare and they’re reliant on their stash of food, then there’s now loads of other people who know they’ve got loads of non-perishable food stashed. People who might be very hungry.

AIBU to think that telling everyone about your food hoarding is a really bad idea if you’re planning for possible food shortages?

I have a pantry of Hotel Chocolat and cheese so I think I’ll be okay.

PositivelyPERF · 02/02/2019 16:41

Can anyone recommend a good brand of tinned carrots? It’s the one thing I want to get, but never seem to get a decent tasting one.

PositivelyPERF · 02/02/2019 16:42

Oh! And I’ve never bought tinned meat, but would like some for my youngest. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

bellinisurge · 02/02/2019 16:49

PositivelyPERF not a fan of tinned meat either but corned beef is ok. I used to batch make a load of Cornish pasties to take to work with corned beef, sweet potato and baked beans. When I was short of cash.
As a 70s kid I used to eat meat spread in little jars. Not my first choice now but I wonder if it would appeal.

I personally don't have a low opinion of my friends, but there is one household in my extended family where the adults are of the Brexit as religion type, and they live nearby. That's not about my opinion of them, it's just what they're like. I've discussed getting a bit extra in with family members who are Remain and moderate Leave, and they've decided to arrange a few supplies too. But I know full well there will be some people close to me who would scoff at the idea as they genuinely think it'll be all marvellous. They do have a chest freezer so hopefully there'll be stuff they could eat in there anyway, but if not then I could envisage a situation where they'd expect some of the stuff I've put by for my kids. If I am going to assist ill prepared family members in the event of disruption to supply chains, I want it to be because I've offered and to be food that I can manage without, not for any other reason.

PositivelyPERF · 02/02/2019 16:57

Thank you bellinisurge. I was just thinking of getting a few tins in, in case of prolonged bad weather. We had a very bad March, last year. My youngest has SN and I don’t want to have to leave her, in order to walk to the shops.

lljkk · 02/02/2019 17:22

Venezuela. Where food shortages are a long term real Thing. "Home invasion" as they call burglaries, are still about obtaining valuables not raiding pantries.

PositivelyPERF · 02/02/2019 17:27

Oh well that’s ok then, lljkk. People will just break into homes to steal valuables, because the cost of food has gone up so much. I’ll feel much better knowing that. 🙄

lljkk · 02/02/2019 17:36

not convinced they're stealing valuables to buy food... but I guess we can't rule it out.

PositivelyPERF · 02/02/2019 17:43

Tbf lljkk, I’m more concerned about the family scroungers wanting my extras. I once told one of the younger couples to take a large bag each and help themselves to food from my walk in larder, as they were just trying to get onto their feet. I really didn’t expect them to take all 12 large tins of sweet corn amongst all the groceries. They’re lovely people, but FFS, they could have left one tin. I’m sure they had trouble getting all their 💩 to flush that week! 🤣

Lovelyflowerstoday · 02/02/2019 17:52

My DC's have started eating my stock of sweet corn already Confused

nancy75 · 02/02/2019 18:03

Home invasions happen in this country now & have been happening since long before the Brexit vote

PositivelyPERF · 02/02/2019 18:13

My DC's have started eating my stock of sweet corn already I’m afraid I’m guilty of eating a few tins of sweet corn from my stock. But it’s so bloody tasty. Blush

I went through the store yesterday and realised I’ve only five tins left. I’ve been lazy and just grabbed from the store and not replaced it, but I’m handy with tools, have lots of wood and plan on building a rotation system so I can see what I have at a glance and can replace it easily. It also makes it easier to keep on top of the dates.

PerverseConverse · 02/02/2019 18:21

I was thinking tinned sweet corn instead of frozen to give more room in the freezer. It's more expensive than frozen but handy to have.

HollaHolla · 02/02/2019 18:24

I have quite a bit of essential medication for a chronic long-term health condition. The two main medications I take are manufactured in France and Switzerland. I’m ensuring I’ve got about a month’s worth extra in the house, in case of supply problems. I know that’s probably selfish, but I’d cost the NHS way more by landing up in hospital, if I don’t have it....

SalrycLuxx · 02/02/2019 18:29

I’ve got a larder sufficiently well stocked that my elderly relative could move in and be supported in addition to the kids. I do t actually think we’re headed for a mad max dystopia, but should things get hairy then everyone outside my immediately family can f**k off and find their own supplies.

nancy75 · 02/02/2019 18:31

HollaHolla medicine is very different to food, you can’t just take whatever they’ve got in the shops & it is sensible to have a supply of the meds you need.

PositivelyPERF · 02/02/2019 18:49

PerverseConverse. Try Tesco tinned Naturally Sweet Sweetcorn. It’s my favourite and, in my opinion, far nicer than the branded ones. 50p for a 325g tin. They have a new Growers Harvest one in, but I haven’t tried it yet.

PositivelyPERF · 02/02/2019 18:50

Your comment started of so nicely, then BAM! 💥

then everyone outside my immediately family can fk off and find their own supplies That really made me laugh. 🤣

Lovelyflowerstoday · 02/02/2019 18:52

I love these threads, they make me feel just a teeny bit less despondent.

CoughLaughFart · 02/02/2019 19:15

The op explains that she had seen pictures of people's supplies in Facebook. You can have the highest privacy settings in the world but if you announce on FB that you have supplies, you have no way of knowing who else sees that announcement.

Isn’t controlling who sees what exactly what privacy settings do?

bellinisurge · 02/02/2019 19:18

Up to a point. But you can export photos out of FB.

bellinisurge · 02/02/2019 19:27

I have a couple of FB friends who , it turns out, are rabid Leave supporters. Rather than draw attention to my distaste at some of their Leave means leave bollocks by unfriending them, I just ignore. But if I were to post a picture of my stash on FB, they would see it. And I don't know who they know. Nor do I particularly trust them.

yolofish · 02/02/2019 19:34

DH has bowel cancer. I am currently stockpiling loo roll and bleach and disinfectant wipes (sod the environment). Am also trying to buy in tins and dried stuff. I think this is only sensible due to potential disruption and price rises. I think the more of us who can add little bits to our shopping every week the better, it means we can be safer and also means we dont have to fight with the zombies... and leaves more stuff on the supermarket shelves for those who cant afford/dont have the forsight.

PositivelyPERF · 02/02/2019 19:48

yolofish, I’m so sorry about your husband. I nursed my husband, so I’m aware how stressful it already is, without Brexit looming.

Is there a Home Bargains near you? In my opinion they do the best quality loo roll and it’s inc cheap. I get the one in the green wrapper called Nicky and their kitchen roll is only a pound for a really good quality one.
