To think they shouldn’t be advertising that they’re stocking up for Brexit?

So with Brexit approaching, some people (including me) are concerned about the possibility of food shortages etc afterwards.

One of my Facebook friends has started posting photos on Facebook of them stocking up.

Photos of crates and crates filled with a variety of tinned food, dried food, UHT milk, bottled water and other drinks, toiletries, medicines etc.

With comments along the lines of “we’re stocking up for Brexit, we’ll be ok”

I think they’re daft.
Not about the stocking up, I’m buying in extra stuff just in case too - but I think it’s daft to be telling hundreds of people on Facebook.

If things get to the point where shelves are bare and they’re reliant on their stash of food, then there’s now loads of other people who know they’ve got loads of non-perishable food stashed. People who might be very hungry.

AIBU to think that telling everyone about your food hoarding is a really bad idea if you’re planning for possible food shortages?

Desperate hungry people do desperate things they wouldn't normally. We have no idea what will happen post brexit but being prepared is sensible. If nothing changes and there's still everything I need in the shops and prices remain the same then I'll just need to go shopping less often. If there are food shortages and prices go up then I have a nice buffer for my family which on my limited income means I can feed us better and for longer at pre-brexit prices. There's no panic, just sensible precautions.

[Stolen food] would be very, very easy to sell

Wot, on street markets? Where is the outlet? The price will have to be lower than what's in shops yet enough to pay for trader's time & the pitch fee (£20 for all day, I think?). Not a lot of profit margin if the food is basics like beans and flour.

Career criminals view time in gaol as a hazard of the job, but it's also time away from making money. Most career crims live with their moms, anyway. So factor in the time to break in, a way to transport many hundreds pounds of food (from the robbed home to storage, and again to the street market), more erosion to profits.

Let me guess.... y'all live in places where there are dodgy guys down t'pub selling cases of baked beans for £2.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 01/02/2019 19:25

I think it will quickly become very obvious who has a stockpile and who doesn't

PositivelyPERF · 01/02/2019 19:26

Please, people. Let’s not get into a slanging match. I think we can have different opinions, without becoming insulting. I have actually really enjoyed discussing the different reasons for people prepping or not.

lljkk · 01/02/2019 19:26

... local shop. But ok, I don't think many corner indie shops have baked beans in Tesco wrappers or flour in large vats any more. Or do we think folk will buy tins with no label... or with home-made labels? Avery made a family fortune with the technology to put labels on tins. More profit margin erosion.

Updated definitions in the new Brexitannian English Dictionary:

PANIC : taking gradual action, in January, for an event in March.

SMUG: having taken gradual action in January.

SHORTAGES: something that will definitely happen in January, when supply chains are not disrupted, due to PANIC (see above), but somehow will definitely not happen in March, when supply chains are disrupted.

CAUSATION: people who buy smoke alarms in January cause fires in March.

BLITZSPIRIT: something apparently very good and quintessentially British, a highly desirable state of the nation, which will come about in March (but not in January) due to the SHORTAGES (see above) which are not going to happen in March (but are in January).

OBESITY CRISIS: an undesirable state of the nation, caused by European strawberries, and which will be cured by the SHORTAGES which aren’t going to happen, or alternatively by a patriotic government mandate for the thin people to eat slices off the fat people.

ARMY: SMUG (see above) group who are UNPATRIOTICALLY PANICKING (see above).

BELITTLING: asking basic questions of someone with whom you are in conversation in order to identify whether you are both proceeding from the same level of comprehension of the relevant issues.

STOCKPILE: simultaneously
(1) a hoard of essentials literally taken from the mouths of proper ordinary people by posh elites who have pushed prices up and CAUSED (see above) SHORTAGES (see above),
(2) a hoard of luxurious irrelevant fripperies like caviar and au pairs, that only posh elites care about thus irrelevant to proper ordinary people,
(3) a vast load of stodgy unappetising inedibles, not proper food, that no proper ordinary people would want anyway, and which will end up being thrown away and wasted thus destroying the environment thanks to posh elites.

CRESS: Level of agricultural and food distribution expertise required to assure everybody not to STOCKPILE (see above).

CRYSTAL BALL:
(1) A Heisenberg quantum device permitting Leavers to accurately predict that “it” will be “FIIIIIINNNEE” after a “short term” of “some adjustment” but which, when asked for measurements of “fine/short/some” ceases to exist.
(2) A device that Remainers definitely don’t have, which is why they PANIC (see above) and CAUSE (see above) SHORTAGES (see above) without any evidence for their actions.

STARVATION: an often-fatal and previously undesirable condition. Due to BLITZSPIRIT (see above) anything less severe than this is no longer deemed worthy of discussion. (See also: MAD MAX, ARMAGEDDON, END OF THE UNIVERSE).

GULLIBLE: keeping, for unapproved reasons such as Brexit, a STOCKPILE (see above), however keeping a STOCKPILE (see above) for approved reasons such as “just because” is FIIIIIINNNEE.

newnameforthis7 · 01/02/2019 19:27

I wouldn't tell anyone.

We always stock up well anyway though, as we live very rural, in the sticks, and some stuff we have is only available from a big town 20 miles from us, and we only go there twice a month.........

I’m relying on my parents. War/post war babies they have always have enough food to see anyone through a nuclear winter in their various freezers (they have at least 3).

Backwoodsgirl · 01/02/2019 19:29

Rule 1: Never tell anyone about your prepping

Rule 2: Arm yourself and be prepared to defend yourself from people trying to loot you.

PositivelyPERF · 01/02/2019 19:31

Don’t be silly, lljkk. I’ve worked in really poor areas where vans pull up and are suddenly surrounded by people looking a bargain. Have you never actually seen that? You don’t even need a pitch. They don’t have the same overheads as honest traders.

PerverseConverse · 01/02/2019 19:31

@TheElementsSong it was me as you sprang to mind when people started shaking their heads at "panicking/gullible/hysteria" etc Grin

bellinisurge · 01/02/2019 19:31

Hooray @TheElementsSong !

PositivelyPERF · 01/02/2019 19:32

I’m developing a girl crush on you TheElementsSong. 🥰🤣

Backwoodsgirl · 01/02/2019 19:32

If you have a stockpile that you want to keep, you need to learn to be the “grey man”

Blend in. Don’t be the only one on the street using a car, or with lights on etc. If people are waiting in line for food join in even if you don’t need it.

TheElementsSong · 01/02/2019 19:34

Aw shucks, you all Blush

PositivelyPERF · 01/02/2019 19:35

I’m just explaining about how much I have, lljkk not saying the local shop is going to rob me. My local shop only sells organic anyway. 😁 Anyway, the only Tesco label stuff I have is their gorgeous sweet corn and fizzy water. #foodsnob

PositivelyPERF · 01/02/2019 19:36

learn to be the “grey man goes off grumbling about sexism

😁

ItsMEhooray · 01/02/2019 19:39

'Why so sad, brexiteers?
I'm tickety boo actually.
Had a lovely day, chilli is tasting exceptionally good and about to have a glass of wine. Feel mostly happy and contented with my life the vast majority of the time so really, no need to think I'm sad my love'

Hope that's British wine you're drinking (Envy)

mobyduck · 01/02/2019 19:40

yeah, cos it's going to be like the apocalypse with people smashing down neighbours' doors and shooting them to get their avocado.
Get a grip ffs

LOL!

PositivelyPERF · 01/02/2019 19:41

I keep trying to stock up on wine, then friends call round and I end up drinking it. Blush

You're joking, right?

PerverseConverse · 01/02/2019 19:42

@ItsMEhooray brexiteets believe that we shouldn't import things out of season because strawberries cause obesity and we have enough food of our own but it's perfect rly fine to import some things. See the Brexitannia Dictionary above for further info and possibly Dh and his brexit cupboard thread (think that's where Ciderbrains said about crappy fruit and veg from abroad).

Luckyleprechaun80 · 01/02/2019 19:43

Do you really think parliament will allow a no deal? I certainly don’t, Yvette Cooper will put a legally binding amendment through again and it will be voted on to take that option off the table. There is only a minority in Parliament in favour of no deal so it hasn’t got a chance. So I’m not stockpiling anything and I’m sleeping easy at night.

bellinisurge · 01/02/2019 19:44

Hope you are right @Luckyleprechaun80 . Hope for the best. Prepare for the worst. Also a prepper thing.
