To ask you how you self-identify?

Flyingfish2019 · 31/01/2019 20:54

Inspired by the thread about people identifying as men/women. I wonder if any of you self-identifies as different than people would identify him.
To give an example: I am from a mixed cultural background. I self-identify as a member of several of those cultures... mostly of one but also a bit of the others... even though people typically say you can be a member of just one culture and that you cannot be a member of a culture unless you speak the language. In one case I do not speak the language but identify as a member of that culture anyway because me great-grandmother spoke the language and I knew her. I might not make sense to anybody but me but this is how I self- identify. How about you?

I self identify as a disenfranchised European and an outcast in my own country.

Smotheroffive · 01/02/2019 01:15

Nobody's bothered really. I can think whatever I want, makes no difference really. Who gives a damn what anyone thinks they are, so in that sense in agreement with Jamiels.

I don't bother going round telling people what I think I am, that would be weird.

I think its an odd thread considering that some men try to identify as women to rape them in safe women's spaces like prison, and refuges. So you might be trying to stir a hornets nest, or you might be particularly naïve, or just trtingto come across that way, but I expect more.

Let's talk about the weather! Yes! Good idea, is it also snowing with you Jamiels , others?

I identified as someone who throws snowballs earlier....pfft

Smotheroffive · 01/02/2019 01:18

You would be better off going over to far and reading up a bit, before continuing further here.

Smotheroffive · 01/02/2019 01:18

FWR...not far

Flyingfish2019 · 01/02/2019 01:22

@smotheroffive What please? You think prison is a safe womens space? As far as I heard life in prison is very violent. Also most men that identify as women are not in prison so why do you think they do it to end up in women’s prison when they aren’t even in prison.
Yes, if a male criminal suddenly identifies as female and did not do do before he was sentenced to jail I would be suspicious too... but honestly what percentage of the population is in jail at all?

I can't decide, it changes, either a fat old slag or a Jack Russell Terrier.

Purpleartichoke · 01/02/2019 01:24

I identify by the things I love and the things I hate. I like crafts, sci-fi, reading, and generally being a homebody. I identify as a person who is prone to helicopter parenting. I identify as a person who likes working with numbers. I identify as someone who hates camping and the outdoors in general.

My genetics play a big part in my reality, especially since for me they mean daily health struggles, but those aren’t part of my identity.

StoppinBy · 01/02/2019 01:41

I identify as a person, a Mum who tries her hardest and loves her children to 'infinity and beyond Wink '.

Sometimes I identify as little kid and think 'what the hell, I am not old enough to be doing all this adulting' haha but then I realise that I am 33 with two kids and have no choice other than to be adult lol.

PyongyangKipperbang · 01/02/2019 01:49

I was once asked if I identify as a "sort of black woman" (her words) because my daughter is mixed race. Hmm

I self identify as a 19 year old who wondered what the fuck happened.

Smotheroffive · 01/02/2019 01:56

pineapplebryanbrown · 01/02/2019 02:46

Smother i know, at least no one has recognised me in the street yet. Decided on JRT so i can marry my dog who doesn't care that I'm just a fat old slag.

Oceanbliss · 01/02/2019 03:14

Op some of your posts tells me you are not entirely understanding what self-identify means. So I've copy and pasted a dictionary definition for you.

self-identify
verb
assign a particular characteristic or categorization to oneself; describe oneself as belonging to a particular category or group.

Oceanbliss · 01/02/2019 03:30

You can like something and not self-identify with it.

You can enjoy hobbies and not self-identify them.

You can be aware of your biological sex and not self-identify as belonging to either gender as a characteristic or a group. Fwiw gender is a social construct not a biological reality. It's society saying if you are this biological sex you should have these interests and not those interests, play with these toys not those toys, be good at this job but not that job, like this colour not that colour. I think gender as a social construct is oppressive, controlling, abusive, damaging and destructive to all people of either male or female biological sex.

I also think us and them mentality, which can grow from segregating people into different groups and can arise from the notion of self-identify getting completely out of control, is unhealthy.

pineapplebryanbrown · 01/02/2019 07:01

lazy i self identify as wondering whether your comment reflects your true self identity.

anniehm · 01/02/2019 07:08

Plenty of people in the U.K. have a second cultural background but don't speak the language - it's past on by stories and food. Our friends kids don't speak the languages of their grandparents, nor are anything but English in their ways but at 18 they can make amazing food taught by their grandmother (who they barely understand as both refused to speak anything but English and parents didn't push it). They identify as British but also Indian heritage (parents born in Uganda though)

pineapplebryanbrown · 01/02/2019 07:20

Ok I'll be serious now. I actually don't understand what it means really.

There are some things I simply am white, female, a mother - those things are in my fabric i cannot /don't think about changing those things.

There are things i care very deeply about. For instance disability as it affects many people I love. But i am not disabled. So i can't self identify as disabled but can self identify as someone who cares about disability rights. Is that how it works?

ALittleBitofVitriol · 01/02/2019 07:30

I read identity as to mean resonates with my personality/preferences so, it's fine I guess. I resonate more with the Welsh part of my bloodline than the English part, but that's mostly romanticized ignorance speaking, as I've never actually set foot in either country...

I'm wondering if you're asking in good faith though flyingfish especially after seeing the post of yours about women's prisons. If you're interested in that discussion, come on over to the Feminism and Women's Rights board, we've got plenty of very knowledgeable women who can fill you in on the stats (spoiler - yep, males identifying as trans to assault women in prison already happened)

Strugglingtodomybest · 01/02/2019 07:31

Wouldn’t you say John identifies as French while Jack does not.

I would say, who cares? Honestly? It makes no difference to anyone what they identify as does it? It's personal to them.
