To miss uni today because of the cold?

I just can't face the drive. It's an hour plus and the heating isn't working in my car. Even with a hat coat and gloves (and a blanket over my lap) I was freezing by the time I got there yesterday.

Car is booked in for Monday and should be fixed. It's currently -7 and I just want to cry thinking about it.

You must be very privileged if you honestly think its impossible for a mother of 4 on disability benefits to only have fabric shoes.

Unfortunately for me it's true.

I have a pair of slippers. A pair of fabric trainers. A pair of summer sandals. I do have a pair of Wellington boots but they let water in and are very uncomfortable so the fabric trainers with 2 pairs of socks is the best option I have Biscuit

Thanks for making out I'm living in fantasy land though.

ItsameAmario · 31/01/2019 11:34

MREX That was directed at you btw

BlancheM · 31/01/2019 11:38

Sakura it is obvious but how is it not obvious that in order to get on the said buses, you will feel the cold whilst walking to the station and waiting at stops and it's a ballache in more ways than sitting in one's own car which will get you from a to b no problem.
Absolutely baffling thread. Responding to the OP's question doesn't cut it when other people want to make it about this that and the other 😂

Lweji · 31/01/2019 11:44

By the time I got there yesterday, I felt quite ill and was cold all day.

Hypothermia is not to be joked with. I'm sure you could take more preventative measures, but sitting for an hour, then sitting in lectures, then sitting for another hour won't help.

I think I remember one expert on those survival tv programmes being struck by it when he decided to go alone on an icy trail. Maybe that former SAS guy?

And yes, most of us don't have Innuit gear to face such low temperatures these days.

joanmcc · 31/01/2019 12:11

@blancheM - Where do you live that ice doesn't form at minus 7 degrees? Seems fairly obvious from the post that she's taking all the conditions into account.

BlancheM · 31/01/2019 12:17

Oh ffs read the thread like I did. The ice is a moot point when the OP is talking about feeling cold, being cold, not being able to face the cold. She even came back after all the ice talk and clarified, it isn't the ice, it's the cold.

RedWineIsFabulous · 31/01/2019 12:18

I wouldn’t go but then that’s me.

DarthLipgloss · 31/01/2019 12:22

I'm a lecturer and had horrible nearly 2 hour commute today in 19 yr old VW Van with no heating (was a lift so felt grateful).
I had to keep scraping ice off the inside of the windows so he could see...
Get yourself in :)

ShadyLady53 · 31/01/2019 12:51

Lecturer update lol. I managed to get in ok, the roads were pretty clear so I actually arrived really early but the campus is like a skating rink. Unfortunately, half of my students are absent so far due to the cold...only one doesn’t live on campus 🙄. My first class was cancelled and so are my last two tutorials, at least I’ll get to set off for home an hour early!

I’m feeling slightly poorly and very jealous of you being wrapped up at home with your hot drinks and piles of toast OP.

CandyMelts · 31/01/2019 12:57

God I remember missing lectures as I couldn't decide what to eat for breakfast and would be late ...
That was a 20 min walk

RiverTam · 31/01/2019 13:50

There's a difference between getting in to do the job you're paid to and being a paying student! I would have though that would be obvious to anyone working in a uni...

QuestionableMouse · 31/01/2019 14:02

Glad I stayed at home. Just heard about a three car accident at my slip road this morning. Didn't sound too good sadly.

isseywithcats · 31/01/2019 14:06

my other half who is a lecturer at uni who sat in his office all day yesterday waiting for students who didnt turn up for meetings i would say you should at least make an effort to get there as your tutors will have planned a day with students present not sat at home cos "its cold"

RiverTam · 31/01/2019 14:10

but they get paid for doing their job regardless of whether the students rock up or not.

I really don't think you can compare paid employees of a university with the students. And equally shouldn't treat students like schoolchildren.

chaoscategorised · 31/01/2019 14:15

I'm amazed at the people saying to go. I've seen a lot of news articles saying not to drive unless absolutely necessary - and I spent 4 hours stationery on the motorway last night waiting for the police to clear the scene of a horrific crash with over 10 cars involved. The roads are absolutely treacherous today.

QuestionableMouse · 31/01/2019 14:15

@isseywithcats meetings and lectures are different imo. No-one was waiting for me. The lectures will run regardless of if I turn up. I also refer you to the point of it being -7 when I first posted this. It wasn't just a bit cold, it was almost double digits below freezing.

isseywithcats · 31/01/2019 14:28

mouse its minus 4 here today and hes got an hours journey to work and i know everyone is saying do the lecture online, my Oh teaches engineering maths and when it comes to exams he says you can tell the students who did the lectures from online because they just get the basic lecture there and not the teacher pupil can ask questions on the spot experience

RiverTam · 31/01/2019 14:33

iisey I really hope your DH has the whit to understand that missing one day's lectures isn't going to negatively impact anyone's degree, and that the OP's circumstances are completely understandable and that when the advice is don't drive and you don't actually have to - you don't! Because otherwise he doesn't sound that smart.

isseywithcats · 31/01/2019 14:44

River hes not even here this is me talking and smart is what he actually is but yes missing one lecture wont impact but making a habit of it will, and the meetings he had yesterday were all students who have missed lectures and then expect him to go over the whole thing again because they looked at it online and didnt understand some of the eqations because they didnt bother to turn up for the actual lecture he spends hours preparing

Sakura7 · 31/01/2019 15:42

Issey - judging by the OP's posts I really don't think there's much danger of this becoming a habit. It's quite clear it's an exceptional circumstance. Your DH's students slacking off doesn't really have anything to do with the OP.

RiverTam · 31/01/2019 15:43

Quite. No relevance at all.

AlbertWinestein · 31/01/2019 15:52

It’s -30 here today and everyone and everything is running normally. However, I’d still have stayed home too if I were you.

Nayeds · 31/01/2019 15:56

Last night was the coldest of the year so far. As long as it's a one off dw about it.

NotHereForThis · 31/01/2019 16:54

I have 4 degrees from 2 different Russel Group universities, and I managed that on the back of many lectures missed for far more spurious reasons than OP’s, so all those dispensing boring, judgmental piety on this thread can jog on.

DrCoconut · 31/01/2019 16:54

I don't want to go to my maths class first thing tomorrow. But since I'm the lecturer I guess I'm kind of expected 😂. But seriously, no need for martyrdom. Just catch up. The only time (in my experience at least) lecturers get really fed up is when students don't attend, don't catch up and then try to blame us for their less than hoped for results.
