To miss uni today because of the cold?

I just can't face the drive. It's an hour plus and the heating isn't working in my car. Even with a hat coat and gloves (and a blanket over my lap) I was freezing by the time I got there yesterday.

Car is booked in for Monday and should be fixed. It's currently -7 and I just want to cry thinking about it.

Oh don't worry about it, stay home and warm! My uni has cancelled lectures for the rest of the week and I'm bloody glad I don't have to do the hour+ drive this morning.
As it's your first week back I assume it isn't med/NHS degree (as asked by PP) - we went back on 2nd Jan so I'm very jealous 😁

Lweji · 31/01/2019 07:31

If you get hypothermia while driving it's dangerous for you and other road users.

How will you prevent condensation inside the car?
You'll have to keep cleaning the windows or keep windows open.

No.

BlueCornishPixie · 31/01/2019 07:31

I would miss it. One day will be fine and I would be worried about driving an hour with no heating. What if there's a crash and your stuck for ages?

It's your degree, lectures are a resource to use. Borrow someone's notes and look at the lecture on line and you will be fine.

QuestionableMouse · 31/01/2019 07:31

@BiscuitDrama yeah, it needs a new part so not much I can do.

Areyoufree · 31/01/2019 07:32

Don't go. I wouldn't, and I work in academia.

bassackwards · 31/01/2019 07:32

For goodness sake it's fine to miss one day in extenuating circumstances especially since the materials are online. Working (and studying) remotely is commonplace. Just let your lecturer know. And hopefully you can get your heating fixed soon!!

Poodloo · 31/01/2019 07:32

It totally depends. Some universities are flexible on whether you come in or not. It's not like school. Most university degrees cost. the lecturer gets paid A LOT of money to be there.

EjectorCrab · 31/01/2019 07:33

Actually @Lweji has a point I hadn’t thought of that, definitely don’t go if you can’t see out of your windscreen because of condensation.

BlueCornishPixie · 31/01/2019 07:34

Also uni and work are not the same. If ok misses uni the only person whose effected it her. Whilst work others would have to pick up the slack, it creates extra work for others

Shallishanti123 · 31/01/2019 07:35

I wouldn’t go either. It’s 1 hour there plus the return journey too and it’s bloody freezing.

Will they even know you’re not there? When I was at uni our lectures were so big that no one noticed when people didn’t turn up. No register etc.

SuchAToDo · 31/01/2019 07:35

Op if you are going to miss something vital in your lectures then go...bundle up warmly and eat a hot breakfast before you go and take a hot drink with you to keep you warm for the drive..

It will warm up a little later (still be cold but not as cold as now if you see what I mean)

QuestionableMouse · 31/01/2019 07:35

@RolandDeschainsGilly

You're being sensible by not going in imo. Hope you're feeling better soon!

It's linguistics (and a stray lit module 😂) and I could use the day to get through some of the reading.

Ugh just checked the thermometer and it's reading -8.

OP posts:
YerAWizardHarry · 31/01/2019 07:40

Can't believe you are only back this week, we're in week 4, got reading week next week!
I wouldn't do the drive especially if the roads are going to be horrible. Just make sure to catch up online and not binge on Netflix like I would do Grin

QuestionableMouse · 31/01/2019 07:45

Thanks. I have plenty of assignment prep I can be doing (seen exam in week seven, yay) and study better at home.

futuredayspast · 31/01/2019 07:46

It's obviously not safe to drive in those conditions. Don't go. You don't get extra marks for being a matyr and on a personal level I would prefer not to be in an accident caused by someone whose fingers were so cold they lost their grip on the wheel!

I missed lectures for far more spurious reasons and you know what happened? Absolutely nothing.

Those of you replying as though the OP is proposing going round your house to personally kick your family dog need to get a grip.

another20 · 31/01/2019 07:50

My car had this problem once. The windows kept misting and it was dangerous. Sat still in an ice cold metal box was like sitting in a freezer - I got really ill and was unable to concentrate at work, had to leave and then was off the following day.

AndItStillSaidFourOfTwo · 31/01/2019 07:51

Hm. This thread's a bit British (English?) - the winter counterpart to the 'life-threatening heat when it gets above about 24°' summer ones. Where I am 'extreme' conditions start about 7°-10° lower/higher, and it's still quite a temperate climate.

OP, I doubt it's dangerous, tbh, but it will be unpleasant, and the tendency on this thread indicates you'll probably receive understanding, so stay off by all means.

ResistanceIsNecessary · 31/01/2019 07:52

If it was 10 minutes up the road then it would be a case of get on with it.

But it's an hour with no heating and it's minus 7 where you are. I am normally the first to say suck it up and crack on, but I've driven in those temperatures with no car heater. I didn't got about 5 minutes into the journey - my hands were shaking so much it was difficult to change gear, it was so cold I was struggling to think properly - it was dangerous, so I stopped.

Don't go. Send an email explaining you have car problems and that public transport isn't an option. Explain that you'll review the content online.

QuestionableMouse · 31/01/2019 07:53

Just emailed my tutor to let her know. I rarely miss lectures so it shouldn't be a problem.

OP posts:
lilyheather1 · 31/01/2019 07:56

I wouldn't go, but then again I used to miss lectures and catch up online even if it was just raining...

Littleraindrop15 · 31/01/2019 07:58

You've emailed the tutor and you have work to catch up on. So don't feel bad about not going in.. On Monday you can go in bright as a button

Ladyoftheloch · 31/01/2019 07:59

Missing a couple of lectures is absolutely not the end of the world, I really wouldn’t worry about it!

IceniSky · 31/01/2019 07:59

Don't go. It's ok to make life easier for your self. It's not a competition on who is the most perfect.

MaggieAndHopey · 31/01/2019 08:02

Oh, bore off.

HeyDuggeesCakeBadge · 31/01/2019 08:04

Ignore pp's saying go - it's freezing and icy, stay home and keep warm. Why take risks in this weather when you can easily catch up!!
