To miss uni today because of the cold?

I just can't face the drive. It's an hour plus and the heating isn't working in my car. Even with a hat coat and gloves (and a blanket over my lap) I was freezing by the time I got there yesterday.

Car is booked in for Monday and should be fixed. It's currently -7 and I just want to cry thinking about it.

YANBU - an hour in icy conditions isn't a good idea if you have other options such as watching the lectures online. My work doesn't always need me to be physically present, so unless there's an external meeting I need to be at I'd work from home in that situation. (And usually get ten times as much done.)

Gwenhwyfar · 31/01/2019 08:36

"It really is an educational moment...

Would you miss a day of work just because it’s cold outside?

That should be enough to answer your question!"

Not the same is it. You're paid to go to work and if you don't go, someone else might have to do your work.

Nobody's relying on you to be there as a student (usually anyway).
Missing lectures is completely normal for students so this thread made me laugh - mature students are so different!

CallMeSirShotsFired · 31/01/2019 08:37

Isn't the heating drawn from the engine warmth, hence why it takes time to warm up - it's not manufactured artificially?

(I don't know about AC, but if that's what you are using maybe turn it off and rely on the "manual" heating instead?)

@CallMeSirShotsFired

There's no warm/hot air coming through the system regardless of what I do. Mechanic had a peek and thinks it needs a new part (I can't remember what he said had broken).

Xtra Sox, tights, tshirt, hat, gloves will help keep heat in. If still too cold don't go, it is vicious out there. If you are feeling ill with it or more cold than usual in slightly milder weather have your blood tested for thyroid and anemia, diabetes etc.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 31/01/2019 08:46

@RolandDeschainsGilly

Don't blame you at all .

I have IBS(D) as well and often worry of a flare up whilst travelling or at work etc .

neveradullmoment99 · 31/01/2019 08:52

Stay off ffs. Everything is online? Day wont hurt at all.

StealthPolarBear · 31/01/2019 08:53

Yes I'm sure you're right Francis

ItsameAmario · 31/01/2019 08:56

I've just dragged 3 children through snow and ice for 45 minutes (each way). I can't afford a car so have no choice. With no gloves as I can't find mine and fabric trainers as I can't afford winter boots this year. Had to defrost my hands with a hair dryer when I got home.

YABU

TakenForSlanted · 31/01/2019 08:57

I was planning to work from home today but decided to go in because our office is so very well heated.

So YANBU.

PixiKitKat · 31/01/2019 09:00

Intro week? I wouldn't bother. Most of my lectures that week lasted less than an hour! Was always a bit pointless as everything would be on the slides. No discussions would happen either.

Stay home and do uni work instead!

Balaboosteh · 31/01/2019 09:00

I had a vehicle with dodgy heating and honestly felt like I’d never been so cold by the end of a journey. To the point that it may not be greatly safe. I’d skip it and do some extra reading etc to catch up.

llangennith · 31/01/2019 09:07

I'd probably give it a miss as it sounds like you can get all the info you need later.
My first car was very old and had no heater but people wore more clothes back then. We dressed for the cold; not for centrally heated homes, shops, offices and cars. Lots of layers, shawl type scarf over your shoulders, extra layer over your thighs, hat, driving gloves and off we went.
That said, I'm so glad the car I now drive has air conditioning: warm in winter, cool in summer.

Sakura7 · 31/01/2019 09:08

Can't understand why some people make life harder for themselves when there's really no benefit in doing so. Other than being able to pay themselves on the back and look down on others.

Random18 · 31/01/2019 09:10

It’s not that cold!!!!!

Shallishanti123 · 31/01/2019 09:12

ItsameAmario
Poor you.

Sakura7 · 31/01/2019 09:13

Random - it is if you have no heat in your car. Also you don't know where in the country OP is. It was -11 in the north of Scotland.

UnderMajorDomoMinor · 31/01/2019 09:15

I always used to think ‘would I miss work for this reason?’ Answer was always ‘no’ so off I went.

Hot water bottle on your lap?

Just think how much you’re paying. That you make your blood boil Wink

greathat · 31/01/2019 09:17

Ha I remember a set of circumstances where I decided to bunk off a uni lecture. Unfortunately lots of people had the same idea, they were missing about two thirds of the class. We all got summoned one at a time to explain ourselves and told we'd be chucked out if we did it again

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 31/01/2019 09:19

You’ve said it’s not a day where any teaching content is being delivered, it’s just an introduction to the new modules.

You’ve said you usually have good attendance.

You’ve said your lecturers are unlikely to mind.

You’ve said you can access key materials remotely.

You sound sensible. What’s the point of this thread? Follow your university’s policy for reporting absence and stay at home if it is unsafe to travel.

What a waste of time. As I tell my students, if they don't show up it's their problem. I can teach to 100 or 1. And if nobody shows up, I just put the material online and go home earlier.

percypeppers · 31/01/2019 09:25

Sounds like the thermostat. I had a similar problem on a previous car.

Not sure where you are but it's going to snow here this afternoon/tonight (a lot!). Local weather forecaster (who is very accurate) is telling everyone to leave work early. It was -7 last night.

Enjoy your day at home!

Greyhound22 · 31/01/2019 09:39

Bahahahaha

The heater has broken on the car so so someone suggests replacing it as it's so unreliable 😂

Most MN thing I have seen in ages.

No I wouldn't have gone. Although you know you will now get stories about how people trekked through the last lot of snow for 7 hours and lost a toe to get to their admin job and they would do it all again....

QuestionableMouse · 31/01/2019 09:42

Planning on a huge cup of tea, a pile of toast and cracking on with my reading.

Checked the car and there's ice on the inside of the windows...
