To miss uni today because of the cold?

I just can't face the drive. It's an hour plus and the heating isn't working in my car. Even with a hat coat and gloves (and a blanket over my lap) I was freezing by the time I got there yesterday.

Car is booked in for Monday and should be fixed. It's currently -7 and I just want to cry thinking about it.

To miss uni today because of the cold?

I think youve made the right choice mouse

I hope you are able to crack on and have a productive day

Hugglessnuggles · 31/01/2019 08:05

My lecturers when I was at uni would have messaged back that it’s no problem and they’d rather we were safe, than struggle in.
I had ace lecturers though!

ShadyLady53 · 31/01/2019 08:07

I’m a university tutor with an hour’s commute - I might not make it in today and have already had students emailing saying they’re snowed in. I’d rather not do the drive as the road wasn’t gritted yesterday! I think you did the right thing.

Sakura7 · 31/01/2019 08:11

Absolutely right to stay home. Stay safe and catch up on the notes. Missing an odd class here and there is not going to do any harm.

I wonder if some of the martyrs on here populate the same world as the rest of us.

ragged · 31/01/2019 08:13

colleague just spent £35 getting something flushed in her car that fixed her heater (been broken for years). Hope you get it sorted.

Evidencebased · 31/01/2019 08:15

I wouldn't go.
Feeling really really really cold in a car is bad, I know from experience.

Plus the windscreen can refreeze , if you have to use the wipers.

nighttimebrowsing · 31/01/2019 08:15

If your car is unreliable (I know you're getting it fixed Monday) maybe you should look into either getting a new one or facing public transport (I get panic attacks on public transport but still do my uni commute!).

Missing lectures is never something to encourage unless you're contagious imo. It's so rude to the lecturer and honestly does look bad.

What are you studying OP? I'm a Law student and we can't afford to miss lecturesGrin (also get a bollocking!)

Orchiddingme · 31/01/2019 08:16

I have no problem with students not coming in if logistically it is difficult, or they are ill; if the stuff is online that's even better. I think it's sweet when students let me know but I don't mind if they don't. Stay home and get some prep done.

Poloshot · 31/01/2019 08:16

Pretty poor show

StealthPolarBear · 31/01/2019 08:16

Oh here we go with the other countries who have picnics unless it's - 30
Us stupid brits eh

Notquiteagandt · 31/01/2019 08:17

I wouldnt. Just as if your car is unreliable. Know only the heater. But I still wouldnt like to take the chance of it being more. Breaking down or hitting bad traffic in cold with no heating.

If the journy usually takes that long can guarantee take longer in the icey conditions.

Not worth the risk of being stuck and freezing.

QuestionableMouse · 31/01/2019 08:17

Thanks. I have a fantastic mechanic who will get things sorted for me. My lecturers are fab too and I'm sure they won't mind.

NannyRed · 31/01/2019 08:19

It depends on what you are missing and if you can catch up via email. Only you know the answer.

Can you message your tutor, explain the issues with your car and arrange alternative ways to catch up? If yes, then enjoy a duvet day.

Good luck with your car.

Sakura7 · 31/01/2019 08:21

"Missing lectures is never something to encourage unless you're contagious imo. It's so rude to the lecturer and honestly does look bad."

Nonsense. A good student missing one lecture because they can't travel in extreme weather is not a problem. At all. Most of the time the lecturers barely notice, unless there's a trend of poor attendance developing.

QuestionableMouse · 31/01/2019 08:21

@nighttimebrowsing car is a 64 reg so not old and this is the first time it's had a problem.

Public transport isn't an option because there's no bus until 8:30 which means I wouldn't get in until about 10 when I start at 9. Plus it's expensive (bus, train, bus)

Buddytheelf85 · 31/01/2019 08:24

It’s fine - you’re only harming your own education anyway and since the lectures are available online you’re not even really doing that. Enjoy the freedom to bunk off before you enter the workplace Grin (pulling stuff like this will be trickier then!)

QuestionableMouse · 31/01/2019 08:26

@Buddytheelf85 I work too, and have done for quite a few years (mid 30s, returned to education.)

Studying linguistics.

i am of the ‘just keep going and get on with it’ brigade.

But i wouod stay at home today.
I don’t think ANYONE can advocate that staying still more than one hour in -7oC is a good idea.
And using blankets? Whilst you are driving? In icy conditions, aka you need quick reactions? Gloves and blankets seem to me more of a hindrance and risky tbh. You might be warmer but I doubt you will be safer whilst you are driving.

The only thing I can think about, which I assume you would time to find is a small heater that you can plug in your car.
Something like this
Worth thinking about if you have more driving to do before the car be repaired.

Lweji · 31/01/2019 08:29

I'm the second academic here saying it's fine to miss the occasional lecture. Any really important stuff should be made available online.

Racecardriver · 31/01/2019 08:29

Oh come on people. Turning up to uni is counter productive to education. Don’t worry OP. You are doing an educational favour by staying home and doing extra reading instead of going all the way there to listen to some half interested academics explain the curriculum to you very slowly and basically. The vast majority of lectures/tutorials I’ve bedn to have been a complete waste of time for everyone. Universities really should abandon compulsory attendance altogether.

DroningOn · 31/01/2019 08:31

Yabu. Get going.

StealthPolarBear · 31/01/2019 08:31

That's your experience. I doubt it's common.
I'm coming to the end of my studies. For most lectures I read the material in advance but many times I only got to grips with the concepts during the lecture. Having the chance to ask questions, and hear the questions others asked was very valuable.

Lweji · 31/01/2019 08:32

and if you can catch up via email.

When did you last go to university?

People use Moodle or similar these days.

And there were very few cars on the roads and I suspect people didn't commute over an hour.
