To miss uni today because of the cold?

I just can't face the drive. It's an hour plus and the heating isn't working in my car. Even with a hat coat and gloves (and a blanket over my lap) I was freezing by the time I got there yesterday.

Car is booked in for Monday and should be fixed. It's currently -7 and I just want to cry thinking about it.

I wouldn't go, but I was a slacker at uni. Haha. I also loathe the cold!
If the lectures are online as well then you won't actually miss anything will you?

MRex · 31/01/2019 10:00

@ItsameAmario - no boots!?! I just don't believe that unless you're totally disorganised. I have some pairs that are over 15 years old and get pulled out year after year for the cold snaps, you really don't need a new pair each year. I can understand shoes wear out but say if yours had and you had no shoes then why would you have bought fabric trainers instead of shoes that would work in all weathers? Charity shops usually sell boots and shoes very cheaply say £4, ASDA has brand new ones for £12 that you could have bought in summer to do you all year. Nah, I'm just not buying that you can only get about in fabric shoes.

Seriously get to uni and stop slacking! It's not so cold that being out for an hour is too bad! I walk my children 25 mins each way to school/nursery regardless of the weather as I don't drive! We've never frozen to death nor have we melted in the rain Hmm

YogaWannabe · 31/01/2019 10:17

Stay home, keep warm and do some study.
So many martyrs on here 🙄

The circumstances you describe could be dangerous.

YogaWannabe · 31/01/2019 10:18

Big difference between walking for 25mins and sitting still navigating icy roads in a machine that can kill people Hmm

YogaWannabe · 31/01/2019 10:19

*for an hour

BlancheM · 31/01/2019 10:21

I used to race across town with DDs, put them into daycare then get 2 buses each way but hey that's just me. It was always the drivers finding excuses to slack.

19lottie82 · 31/01/2019 10:23

If you’re usually in, I wouldn’t go. I don’t think anyone goes to every single lecture, do they? And surely the lecture notes will be online?

YogaWannabe · 31/01/2019 10:24

All the non drivers talking about absolutely unrelated journeys 🤣

BlancheM · 31/01/2019 10:36

Were you only expecting replies from posters making the exact same journey as the OP somehow, yoga? The question was about not being bothered to go because of the cold.

YogaWannabe · 31/01/2019 10:39

The question was about not being bothered to go because of the cold.

No, the question is about making a potentially dangerous journey on icy roads while being sat still in minus temperatures Confused

TheOxymoron · 31/01/2019 10:41

Sorry but there is a lack of strength of character in many now.

BlancheM · 31/01/2019 10:49

No it wasn't yoga Confused

YogaWannabe · 31/01/2019 10:51

I think you need to read the OP Blanche
OP also never mentioned “not being bothered”, why do people just make things up to fit ther narrative Confused

BlancheM · 31/01/2019 11:05

How strange. The OP doesn't, nor any of the subsequent posts, mention anything like dangerous roads, ice, ect. She speaks about the cold only.
You're making things up then accusing others of it 😂

MRex · 31/01/2019 11:10

@BlancheM - you missed the weather image attached, which has a yellow warning for ice and snow. It's ok to miss things, we all do, but maybe apologise to yoga as you were being a bit rude.

KC225 · 31/01/2019 11:11

We moved from London to Sweden four years ago. This morning my 11 year old twins left the house to catch the bus to school at 7.05. It was -28. It's warmed up slightly now it's lighter. -23 at the moment. Now That's What I Call Nippy.

QuestionableMouse · 31/01/2019 11:12

Of course the roads are icy. I can cope with icy roads. I can't cope with sitting in a freezing car (-7 or 8, remember) for at least an hour. By the time I got there yesterday, I felt quite ill and was cold all day.

YANBU,
Most uni students live a lot closer and miss lectures for hangovers etcGrin honestly don't worry about it

Nesssie · 31/01/2019 11:14

There was a course at my uni that I only ever went to 3 lectures the whole year because it was on a Thursday morning, and Wednesdays were student nights. All the slides were online anyway.

Unis don't care about attendance. They won't even notice you are missing.

BlancheM · 31/01/2019 11:15

No I didn't, Rex. She was only referring to the cold. Do you want to apologise? Don't tell me I might like to apologise for fuck sake.
OP, do want you like. It's your money, it's your education, it's your degree.

Nesssie · 31/01/2019 11:15

^^ oh year, I lived in uni halls that were about 300 metres from the lecture room.

You have the rest of your life to be responsible. Take the damn day off.

RiverTam · 31/01/2019 11:18

don't unis treat their students like adults? Your problem if you don't turn up?

At my uni many moons ago as long as you turned up to tutorials no-one cared about lectures. I mean, I always went to them but the staff wouldn't have done anything if I hadn't.

One of the best differences between school and uni.

Sakura7 · 31/01/2019 11:26

Yoga is absolutely right.

There is a difference between sitting on a warm bus, being driven by someone else, and driving a car with a broken heating system for an hour. Bloody hell, how is that not obvious?

AveAtqueVale · 31/01/2019 11:32

I’m a mature student, rarely go to any lectures that will be put online, as I don’t see why I’d pay £30 for the train and spending three hours travelling there and back when I could learn exactly the same material from the comfort of my living room, accompanied by tea and biscuits. Interactive/ practical classes are obviously different, although now most of our seminars are actually ‘webinars’ so don’t have to go anywhere for those either. I love the internet.

Glad you’ve decided to stay warm OP!
