Cancelling plans because of a cold pathetic?

sallybeer · 30/01/2019 15:26

Had plans to go to the theatre tonight with my friend (both 31)
She texts me this morning cancelling as she is full of cold.
All day on Facebook it's been
"Poorly bad in bed ill with cold"
"Came to mums for her to look after me"
She has 3 kids too so it's not like she's not used to a few germs.
I mean I can understand the flu or sickness bug but a snotty nose? And a sore throat.

OP posts:

Also I know she's perfectly fine leaving the house so a mild cold isn't stopping her

Going out to feed the kids/do the school run/go to the shops/other necessities is not the same as getting dressed up for an evening out.

But of course you know that and you're just being difficult Hmm

TheDarkPassenger · 30/01/2019 18:19

Are you certain she doesn’t just cancel plans with you because youre bitchy and act nastily and she’s fed up of it?

HavelockVetinari · 30/01/2019 18:20

OP: AIBU?

Everyone: yes!

OP: no I'm not! You're all wrong, wrong, wrong!

I'd rather sit with her and catch her cold than go to the theatre with you!

Theres bigger things to worry about in life get over it !

JassyRadlett · 30/01/2019 18:37

Normal people think a cold is minor and carry on with their life as normal.

Normal people know that colds come in a range of severity, from mild sniffles to really unpleasant.

(Normal people also know that flu also varies in severity, despite what some on MN believe.)

paintinmyhairAgain · 30/01/2019 18:37

the drama lama has dc to feed but if her mum was there to look after her on the sofa why couldn't gm feed the kids at home , why the need to go to mcdonalds ?

HeckinHell · 30/01/2019 18:43

I’ve had a cold for the past few days and it’s been worse than usual, I’ve been really poorly with it. Asleep most of the time, coughing my lungs up, aching all over, high temperature. Sometimes they can be that bad! Up until yesterday I thought I was going to have to cancel a planned short break. I managed to drag my ass out to a shop when it was necessary, though; just waited until the drugs were at their most effective then went back to bed afterwards. Needs must!

This is a dripfeed whether you give further info or not now, so...what exactly do you think her real reason for cancelling is?

I’m not usually quite this blunt, but you’re honestly coming across like an unsympathetic bitch. Why are you so angry about this? Maybe she really is feeling too ill to go out?

CatnissEverdene · 30/01/2019 18:48

I had a customer at work today who was coughing like something out of the Walking Dead. I think she clocked the horror on my face, and said "Oh it's ok I'm on antibiotics so it's not contagious", to which I replied "let's hope so, I'm diabetic". I was absolutely fuming, there was no need for her to be out spreading fecking germs.

I have zero tolerance of germ spreaders Angry

MereDintofPandiculation · 30/01/2019 18:51

OP, every time you have had a bad cold you call it flu whether it is or not. She calls it a cold. But because you call a runny nose a cold, and anything worse you call flu, you are assuming she's just got a very mild cold.

slappinthebass · 30/01/2019 19:17

YANBU. I'm shocked at the other replies. Wouldn't be quite as bad to cancel a pub or cinema trip, but theatre tickets you bought in advance at her idea, very rude. Especially when she's not too ill to go to work or McDonald's. Theatre tickets aren't cheap. Paracetamol and a decongestant would sort out cold symptoms temporarily.

recklessruby · 30/01/2019 19:27

I have a bad cold and am at work. Struggled in and wish I was home in bed. 3 days of feeling hot and sneezing and blowing my nose.
I really couldn't go out at night too (And would spoil the performance. My sneezes are monstrously loud).
You are being a bit unreasonable but she's being over dramatic

Claudia1980 · 31/01/2019 00:42

She’ll absolutely have to pay you for the ticket! It’s not your fault she’s sick. Unfortunate for her but it’s not on you to cover her ticket cost!

RupaulsGagRace · 31/01/2019 01:12

Next time you have a cold OP.
DO NOT leave the bed
DO NOT dare ask anyone to look after you
DO NOT try and spend a second with your kids
DO NOT even think about eating
DO NOT leave the house with kids to cheer them up even though u have a cold.

You sound like a massive, MASSIVE bell end. You either do not have kids or have ZERO understanding of love and care.

MonicaGB · 31/01/2019 01:25

YABU. You sound like a lot of hard work. I'm sure it's the combination of the cold and having to contend with you which made her think fuck it.

finnmcool · 31/01/2019 01:26

Why don't you just ask her about the ticket money?

hazandduck · 31/01/2019 01:34

Ugh I have a friend who is so funny about plans being cancelled no matter the reason and takes it mega personally. Shit happens! It really puts me off making plans with her tbh. Don’t be that person, OP! YABU

Pinkbells · 31/01/2019 01:46

If you have a rotten cold, the last thing you want to go out and if I were an audience member the last thing I'd want to hear in the theatre is coughing and wheezing. YABU!

Iloveautumnleaves · 31/01/2019 02:02

So, come on then, out with your drip feed, why didn’t she want to go?

everydaymum · 31/01/2019 03:59

Sometimes when you're sick you just want to stay home and have an early night. Maybe because you're tired, or maybe because you want to make sure you're ok for work the next day, or ok to look after your kids. You can still eat.
She could have a headache and the thought of sitting in the middle of a theatre seems too much?
Regardless of what any of us say OP, you've made your mind up as to what's really going on, and your Post doesn't include it. Comments are being made as per your post but it's not what you want to hear because it doesn't relate to your opinion as to what's really going on.

DameSquashalot · 31/01/2019 05:23

Geminijes

"minor" illness like a cold

You should know, that according to people on here, a cold is not a minor illness. A cold leaves you wanting to stay in bed for days, do nothing, miss work and can last for weeks. They also think that anyone with a cold must stay home and never go out for fear of spreading germ*

DameSquashalot · 31/01/2019 05:25

Posted too soon. @Geminijes I think you're referring to people who can tell the difference between flu and a really bad cold.

AverageHuman · 31/01/2019 05:59

Wow. Why are your friends with her if you think all of this? You think she pulled out so that she didn’t have to pay her half? If that was true either she is a bad friend or is terrible with money / having bad money probs.

MacDonald’s sounds like perfect solution if unwell. When I was preggo and really sick it was the only thing I could face.

But if you feel she’s always very selfish and this is just one more thing then maybe it’s time to distance yourself. First tho I would look at whether you just think so little of yourself that you assume she doesn’t want to see you, and this is making you over analyse everything else.

Groovee · 31/01/2019 05:59

I have a chronic health condition, so a cold floors me.
But if she's someone who is always doing then then its the way they are. Will they ever change?

AverageHuman · 31/01/2019 06:02

Ps totally selfish to go to theatre with a bad cold.. a little sniffle you can keep under control is ok.. but the current virus doing the rounds is vile

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 31/01/2019 06:10

The world doesn’t resolve around you OP

She’s not taking you for a fool Hmm she. An still do all the mundane things in life as they are necessities (work, food shop, etc) going to the theatre when she feels like crap is not.

She’s never once implied she’s in her “death bed” she has however rightly so chosen to rest when she can, considering she also has 3 kids to look after also.

You however have shown your true colours and frankly are a shit friend with the attitude you’ve shown in here.
