Not allowed to cut up pizza in Wetherspoons?

Calvinsmam · 30/01/2019 10:56

We were in Wetherspoons at the weekend having a cheap and cheerful lunch and my DN had a pizza.
We asked them if they could cut up her pizza for her because the last time it wasn’t and the waitress told us they weren’t allowed to anymore and don’t even have pizza cutters in the kitchen. We laughed as we assumed it was a joke but no when the pizza arrived it wasn’t cut up and the waitress said again that for health and safety reasons they weren’t allowed to use a pizza cutter, we asked if they could have used a knife and she said no. We were a bit Hmm
Then she came over with a very sharp steak knife and said we could cut it up ourselves with that if we wanted.

Is this a nationwide rule or is our local Wetherspoons a bit odd?

Also isn’t the owner of Wetherspoons desperate to get us out of the EU because of silly little rules like this?

None of those "just above takeaway" chains that try to be more authentically Italian precut their pizzas. I'm talking about Pizza Express, Zizzi, Prezzo, Bella Italia, etc.

limitedperiodonly · 31/01/2019 21:06

they do still do them, and they're useful as a phone stand

How does that work @BlackPrism?

I did used to like Pizza Hut deep pan Super Supremes. Our preference for no black olives was retained in their system and came up every time we called which made me feel like a VIP customer.

We also had garlic bread (good), chicken wings (good) and potato wedges with sour cream dip (quite bad).

And a big bottle of Fanta or Lilt that we gave to the newsagent in a contra deal for money off the paper bill.

helacells · 31/01/2019 21:11

That's bizarre here in the US pizza is always cut for you

MdNdD · 31/01/2019 21:12

It is a very British phenomenon- we associate eating out with a chef preparing our food and if the chef can’t use a knife then what is he doing in a kitchen?! And a waiter / waitress who wants us to have a nice experience.
But of course in these chain places, partly prepared food is shipped in, partly cooked / prepared and a person, who is not a chef whacks it in an oven to heat up, if the instructions don’t say to cut it then they don’t and won’t cut it...
I am not British, but have lived here a long time and it still surprises me! - will never forget the first time I went to one of those pubs and was served chicken that had clearly had the grill marks somehow printed onto it - it had never been anywhere near the open flame of a BBQ type grill!

I find ithese places weird and think that YANBU.

limitedperiodonly · 31/01/2019 21:14

Can I just say, I’m actually getting pms about this

Not from me Calvinsmam, but I agree you should have put it in Chat.

People are terribly censorious in AIBU. Chiefly, it's dull dolts competing with each other

FlamingJuno · 31/01/2019 21:42

Just in from supper in a pizza place (in Switzerland). Large pizzas served uncut but supplied with steak knives. Lovely waiter, I'm sure he would have cut them up if asked. Steak knives adequate but did cause string issues with the cheese.

winniestone37 · 31/01/2019 21:49

If you are disabled or elderley or both or just not capable for some reason it's very normal to ask staff to cut food such as pizza in the kitchen. More Mumsnet users unable to imagine that other people's lives aren't exactly like theirs. Hard not to find them utterly horrible.

Yabbers · 31/01/2019 21:59

When I make pizza at home, I use scissors to cut it up, many people are horrified, but I firmly believe that they are one of the most underutilised kitchen implements and am prepared to die on that hill.
@usernameplusnumbers

We do that too. All DDs food is cut with scissors. It’s so much easier.

@ MummyOfTw0

Some people can’t just get up and go that’s the point they are trying to make!! Some people can’t do things for themselves!!! I will go be a saying I am taught as well as to respect my elders, if you don’t have something nice to say don’t say anything at all.....

villagelife77 · 31/01/2019 22:22

Wtf??!! Is this seriously all you have to worry about?? Literally nothing else to complain about except someone not cutting your pizza for you 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

MummyofTw0 · 31/01/2019 22:24

@villagelife77 so glad it's not just me that things this is a ridiculous non problem 🤣

MummyofTw0 · 31/01/2019 22:25

@Kkwowo In the grand scheme
Of things, you have to admit; this isn't one of life's problems

villagelife77 · 31/01/2019 22:26

😘😘 x

limitedperiodonly · 31/01/2019 22:44

so glad it's not just me that things this is a ridiculous non problem

What's your entry level for people being able to complain about a problem MummyofTw0?

I worked in a Weatherspoon kitchen many years ago. Their burger was a Pattie in a dry bun. I was like WTAF? All the meals came frozen - a 10 portion pack was always stretched to 12-14 portions. Stingy and mean food. No wonder he's so rich.

I moved into the kitchen as the daily barrage of sexual harassment from the punters when I was working behind the bar was unbearable.

YABU for eating at Weatherspoon.

villagelife77 · 31/01/2019 23:05

Can’t even believe I’m posting on here - SERIOUSLY DOES EVERYONE ON THIS SITE HAVE NOTHING ELSE TO WORRY ABOUT??????!! Mumsnet, you’re a joke.

Teabag37 · 31/01/2019 23:59

Live in Italy(35 years)....Have NEVER seen here or in the UK a pre cut pizza.....takes two minutes to cut...???????????

HeronLanyon · 01/02/2019 00:09

It’s like we are all in parallel universes isn’t it. Some of us yes. Some of us ‘never seen it’ !! Bit like that dress which by the way was gold and black.

BlueTrees123 · 01/02/2019 01:11

I think the major issue here is that Wetherspoons don't actually have kitchens, therefore they don't have chefs who can cut up pizzas. Anyone who eats there deserves all that's coming to them tbqh- you could get a much higher-quality M&S Ready meal for a quarter of the price. I'd much rather that than whatever it is that they serve.

NoDealNoreen · 01/02/2019 01:34

Why are Wetherspoons still selling pizza when they've managed to get rid of most European drinks? Pizza is Italian and should also go.

Mymomsbetterthanyomom · 01/02/2019 02:46

Cut.
It.
Yourself.

MummyofTw0 · 01/02/2019 05:38

@limitedperiodonly basically this

Kkwowo · 01/02/2019 06:01

@MummyofTw0

I think it is one of life’s problem when people are unwilling to do something nice for someone who can’t do it themselves it’s your attitudes and everyone else that has put down stupid answers if you don’t like what is been posted don’t put other people down with your opinions, keep them to yourself!!! It cost nothing to help someone!!!

MummyofTw0 · 01/02/2019 06:03

@Kkwowo out of interest, have you ever been to Italy?

They don't cut up pizza there
