Not allowed to cut up pizza in Wetherspoons?

Calvinsmam · 30/01/2019 10:56

We were in Wetherspoons at the weekend having a cheap and cheerful lunch and my DN had a pizza.
We asked them if they could cut up her pizza for her because the last time it wasn’t and the waitress told us they weren’t allowed to anymore and don’t even have pizza cutters in the kitchen. We laughed as we assumed it was a joke but no when the pizza arrived it wasn’t cut up and the waitress said again that for health and safety reasons they weren’t allowed to use a pizza cutter, we asked if they could have used a knife and she said no. We were a bit Hmm
Then she came over with a very sharp steak knife and said we could cut it up ourselves with that if we wanted.

Is this a nationwide rule or is our local Wetherspoons a bit odd?

Also isn’t the owner of Wetherspoons desperate to get us out of the EU because of silly little rules like this?

Has the world gone mad? My pizzas have never been pre-cut when eating in a restaurant . Even if your GM is 85, if she is incapable of slicing through some cooked dough, how does she cut up other food on her plate? Hmm

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 31/01/2019 18:17

I don’t like ready cut pizza. I really fancy a dominos mushroom and chilli one right now though.

Rosejasmine · 31/01/2019 18:17

It's not a rule that the EU have banned kitchens from cutting up pizzas. It's such a dump at Wetherspoons - they probably don't have any clean sharp knives in the kitchen.

Purplecatshopaholic · 31/01/2019 18:20

I wouldn't eat there myself, the 'food' is terrible (IMHO), frozen, fried, yuck. I dont drink there either now since the twat owner banned dogs!

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 31/01/2019 18:23

If we have pizza at home I find it easier to use a pizza cutter than a knife. That is why they exist. Would have thought pizza cutter safer than a knife anyway?

ChubRubTheStruggleIsReal · 31/01/2019 18:24

Pizza Hut: pre cut
Pizza Express: not pre cut

🙄
Is this a stupid attempt to convince people the EU is evil?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 31/01/2019 18:25

I have been known to use scissors (clean ones I have in the kitchen for cutting food - not the ones I use on my toenails!)

Daw321 · 31/01/2019 18:27

Not really sure i could have bothered to have created such a fuss when i could have just done it myself.

easyandy101 · 31/01/2019 18:33

In my local spoons on a steak night once and went off to get some mustard and someone nicked my steak knife Shock

I go there cos its cheap for the nice vibes

threatmatrix · 31/01/2019 18:34

Because they really have the time to cut every pizza they cook don’t they. I can’t believe this is even a post.

easyandy101 · 31/01/2019 18:37

how does she cut up other food on her plate?

Maybe that's why she orders pizza?

PerspicaciaTick · 31/01/2019 18:43

The owner of Wetherspoons appears to be a little bit peculiar about the EU. He recently distributed a proper free magazine under the Wetherspoons brand which was basically a multi-page rant about the EU and the rubbishness of any policy which doesn't involve crashing out of the EU as fast and as hard as possible. Interspersed with smiley staff photos.
It was very, very odd.

Yesyouarebu · 31/01/2019 18:44

Sorry haven't read the full thread. I work for wetherspoon and what you were told isn't correct. Full size pizzas don't get cut as standard, they should be served with a steak knife. Apparently its more authentic 🤷‍♀️
Kids and takeaway pizzas should be cut though. I think maybe the kitchen have lost/broken all their cutters and forgot to order more 😂
Don't know where the bar staff got her info tbh 🙄
Also if someone asked for it cut we would. Cut it 😂

Plenty of pizza cutters in Italy Hmm

ChakiraChakra · 31/01/2019 18:51

I was pointing out that it’s ironic that a man who has gone on about being free of silly rules from the EU has weird ones in his own establishment

I've worked for him. He has all kinds of silly rules that are nothing to do with the EU ;)

delboysskinsandblister · 31/01/2019 18:56

it's probably something like a shellfish/sesame/soy/ allergy cross contamination death by Pizza policy.

manicmij · 31/01/2019 18:58

Perhaps a certain category of staff is only allowed to use cutting tools in the kitchen then for health and hygiene rules only a knife is allowed then a clean knife every time in case of cross contamination with germs and vegan/meat. These are all imaginings, I have no idea if any apply.. With regard to your GM needing the pizza cut, is there any other food on the menu she would enjoy and not need pre cut. Do hope the experience doesn't put her off enjoying a meal out with you all.

DogInATent · 31/01/2019 18:59

Almost certainly another post-Pret over-reaction to allergy awareness, there's a lot of it about.

(mind you, there's also a surplus of daft twunts ignorant enough to believe this might be down to the EU - and I wouldn't put it past Tim Martin to encourage this belief to further his political agenda)

Kkwowo · 31/01/2019 19:16

I agree with you I think it is right that you asked your pizza to be sliced as every pizza I have had out dining has been sliced, or takeaway pizza sliced, Pizza Hut sliced, the people saying cut it yourself etc must not have had a relative that is older and being a carer asking a family member to cut your dinner while you out would cause upset and hurt and the feeling and fear losing there independence, which could cause them to give up!! people are so rude sometimes.

MummyofTw0 · 31/01/2019 19:22

This is such a first world problem.

Kkwowo · 31/01/2019 19:26

You have to remember that it was our elders that got us out of these problems yes there are more problems in the world but who is saying this did not effect her older granny, older people are scared of people these day as silly people leaving reviews the women asked a question for god sake, it’s people that put down silly answers that are the problem

BlackPrism · 31/01/2019 19:31

It's probably because it has to be presented as displayed in a franchise guide. People cutting it up oddly and getting complaints so they just have to leave it to you.

Catsinthecupboard · 31/01/2019 19:33

Mummyoftw0
I hardly think that a flat, uncut pizza is a first world problem.

How about you order food and not get utensils?

Pizza is cut specifically to be eaten cut into wedges.

YOU seem a first world attitude.

BlackPrism · 31/01/2019 19:35

@daisypond see with most takeaways I'd agree that you could cook it just as nicely or go to a restaurant.

But Pizza is unique in that it is almost always better from a takeaway than any restaurant or supermarket. It just has a unique quality. I urge you to try it.

limitedperiodonly · 31/01/2019 19:38

@Tinkobell that pizza cutter horror film was brilliant. Not just the bad hair but the bad acting. I loved the way the possessed child wheeled the cutter up the banister and sliced through the phone line.

I've never come across a sharp pizza wheel in a restaurant. You're better off using those round-nosed scissors they give small children.

OP I've only read up to P6 but I get what you're saying. One of the themes of Brexit is that we can free ourselves of footling EU rules and red tape about bendy bananas which were mostly made up by Boris Johnson when he mucked around writing hilarious lies about Brussels at the Daily Telegraph in the 1990s.

It might have been said before, but generally, deep pan pizzas are pre-sliced and thin ones are left. It's probably because they lose heat.

I love pizza but hate cutting them up in restaurants. I don't have any disabilities but I'm clumsy and usually fire bits at people.
