Not allowed to cut up pizza in Wetherspoons?

Calvinsmam · 30/01/2019 10:56

We were in Wetherspoons at the weekend having a cheap and cheerful lunch and my DN had a pizza.
We asked them if they could cut up her pizza for her because the last time it wasn’t and the waitress told us they weren’t allowed to anymore and don’t even have pizza cutters in the kitchen. We laughed as we assumed it was a joke but no when the pizza arrived it wasn’t cut up and the waitress said again that for health and safety reasons they weren’t allowed to use a pizza cutter, we asked if they could have used a knife and she said no. We were a bit Hmm
Then she came over with a very sharp steak knife and said we could cut it up ourselves with that if we wanted.

Is this a nationwide rule or is our local Wetherspoons a bit odd?

Also isn’t the owner of Wetherspoons desperate to get us out of the EU because of silly little rules like this?

@NewName8674

Obviously Greggs is a different type of business, but the point still applies. People fall over themselves to proclaim it the best thing since sliced bread when actually the food is of very poor quality and even tastes mediocre at best. There are also plenty of real bakeries which actually offer cheaper products of much higher quality.

I have eaten a lot of pizza in lots of different types of restaurants. Must admit have never used Pizza Hut or dominos etc. Have very rarely had it ore cut in the uk. In Italy it’s a mix of cut and not. Ate in Naples at place where marguerites was first served - not cut. When cut in Italy they tend to cut it quickly at the table but also expect you to ask them not to. Most often not cut.
My elderly ma always asked for pizza to be cut as her arthritis meant she really struggled to do it for herself. Also those with lots of conditions would ask.

HeronLanyon · 31/01/2019 00:04

Pre not ore. Rarely pre cut in uk.

OnTheHop · 31/01/2019 08:16

Pizza Express: not cut
Franco Manca: not cut

But I’m sure both would if asked.

angelikacpickles · 31/01/2019 08:20

Pizza Express do pre-cut the kids pizzas actually.

RhiWrites · 31/01/2019 08:40

OP, I got your joke about silly little rules. I’m surprised so many people didn’t.

I also don’t think it’s unreasonable to ask for a pizza to be presliced.

What does surprise me is that the pizza was nice. Please describe the pizza in detail? I think that’s been missed out. A diagram would be appreciated too. Don’t miss out any toppings.

YABU not to go to a proper restaurant to eat.

Does that make you feel V.V. superior? Have you tried whetherspoons pizza to comment on it?

I had one right after they started doing them. It was one of the nicest pizzas I've had in a long time. The bloke behind the bar said they've spent a lot of money on real pizza ovens. It was thin, crispy, - like real Italian pizza - the cheese was melted nicely and not burnt & crusty or cold & solidified. And all for a fiver! I don't think they had it in a meal deal then.

It came uncut but was easy enough to cut ourselves.

Hellokittymania · 31/01/2019 09:04

Hollow, I DO need help cutting up food sometimes due to my disability and nobody has had a problem with doing it in the kitchen. I have never been to Weatherspoons though. Anyway, with pizza, if it isn't cut already, I just rip it off into pieces myself with my hands. It's not the prettiest, but it works.

Bunnyfuller · 31/01/2019 17:24

Wetherspoons isn’t even middle end, and I doubt there’s much attention paid to customer service trading. I expect the waitress made it up on the spot because she couldn’t be arsed and knew the kitchen would be the same.

But you could slice it yourself.

ToriiaLouise · 31/01/2019 17:32

I work in Wetherspoons and I can confirm it’s to do with the fact that too many people ended up stealing the pizza cutters that we stopped handing them out Hmm
Kids pizza’s are cut up (as per spec) but adult’s one’s aren’t! However, if you asked for it to be cut up normally we take it into the kitchen and cut it up!
The steak knifes aren’t really that sharp (I’ve never cut myself on one).
We have about 3 pizza cutters in our kitchen, so it’s highly likely that they just don’t have any in theirs.

EllenMP · 31/01/2019 17:36

YANBU. That is truly bizarre. I still ask for my youngest son's pizza to be cut up, and he is 11. It's hard to cut pizza with a table knife, and either they make a mess of it, or I spend half my time hacking at his pizza for him. Plus then he has to sit by someone who is willing to cut it up. The kitchen can chop it into slices on a board with three chops of a chef's knife, which is what I use at home. Easiest thing in the world if you are standing at a prep table with a big knife. Pain in the ass if you are two seats away, and the pizza is on a regular plate made uneven by it's rim and sliding about on the table, and you are using a table knife. Frankly, I wish restaurants would cut everyone's pizza. I can only assume that all of the food at Wetherspoons comes fully pre-prepared and they do no actual cooking on site, and therefore do not have a proper knife to do it with. Which is stupid, because you can cut pizza very nicely with scissors, and they certainly have those in their kitchen for cutting open the plastic bags they cook their pre-made meals in. Now I'm annoyed on your behalf. Cheap-ass places like that should do more to attract the family market, and cutting kids food so their parents can actually enjoy their own meal is a no-brainer. Write them a letter, I say.

Sparkerparker · 31/01/2019 17:41

You can’t but a weatherspoons pizza and expect Pizza Express service. 🍕 🔪 🤣🤣

Thisworldsnofun · 31/01/2019 17:41

Haven't rtft but I did hear a few months ago that they'd got rid of the pizza cutters because a customer attacked another customer with one!
Not sure why they won't slice them in the kitchen however

EerieSilence · 31/01/2019 17:42

@Calvinsmam - that thing about the EU rules was either a bad joke or a high level of thickness. You're in a very pro-Brexit establishment, why would they bother? Meanwhile, in Ireland, I get my pizza cut no problem.

user1493282396 · 31/01/2019 17:45

I always ask for my pizza to be sliced whatever pizza restaurant I’m in. They always oblige.

Simcat · 31/01/2019 17:53

Seriously get a grip... the op is talking about pizzas coming with slices cut... not cutting for a child. Nearly all restaurants will serve a pizza with slices cut or an indication of the slices. Some people are just ready to jump on any comments without thinking. Come on mumsnet.Hmm

TheFirstRuleOfFightClub · 31/01/2019 17:54

Wow, this thread!

I got the points you were making op, absolutely crazy. Think there must be something in the water (in some cases, gold leaf bottled water with diamonds in it).

howrudeforme · 31/01/2019 17:59

Sooooo cut up pizza yourself, or if a remainder - don’t go! (Crap eaterie anyway).

Bubblewrapandwine · 31/01/2019 18:01

I would expect a pizza to come presliced in sections, it’s strange for them to refuse

Sunnysas · 31/01/2019 18:05

I’m shocked that a lot of mumsnetters can’t detect irony... it’s obvious that the op doesn’t think it’s a rule from the E.U. that pizzas can’t be pre cut.

Perfectly reasonable request for your pizza to be cut if necessary. I can see that the elderly / children may struggle.

Lala2018 · 31/01/2019 18:05

YANBU people are acting like you asked them to cut it into mouth sized pieces and make airplane noises while spoon feeding you it.

They have pizza cutters for kids pizza's and it's ridiculous that they wouldn't cut it for you.

whitechocolatespaceegg · 31/01/2019 18:10

We were in Wetherspoons on Saturday. Both my boys ordered pizza and it arrived cut into slices?

Lifetheuniverseandeverything · 31/01/2019 18:10

YABU for going to 'Spoons in the first place.

Electricfairy · 31/01/2019 18:12

The owner of Wetherspoons was unable to name a single EU rule that he objected to when interviewed by Owen Jones.

Spiderbabe13 · 31/01/2019 18:14

My daughter works for them and when she told me about this i laughed my head off. It is common place in ALL the spoons pubs. Stupid really if they're not going to ban steak knives and glass. 9f pizza shops can cut them the spoons should too. Bloody stupid if I'm honest. Serve pizza, cut it into slices.
