Not allowed to cut up pizza in Wetherspoons?

Calvinsmam · 30/01/2019 10:56

We were in Wetherspoons at the weekend having a cheap and cheerful lunch and my DN had a pizza.
We asked them if they could cut up her pizza for her because the last time it wasn’t and the waitress told us they weren’t allowed to anymore and don’t even have pizza cutters in the kitchen. We laughed as we assumed it was a joke but no when the pizza arrived it wasn’t cut up and the waitress said again that for health and safety reasons they weren’t allowed to use a pizza cutter, we asked if they could have used a knife and she said no. We were a bit Hmm
Then she came over with a very sharp steak knife and said we could cut it up ourselves with that if we wanted.

Is this a nationwide rule or is our local Wetherspoons a bit odd?

Also isn’t the owner of Wetherspoons desperate to get us out of the EU because of silly little rules like this?

@MummyofTw0

Please do regale us with your tales of starvation in the drought stricken country you live in, or tell us how you've been dodging bombs all day, as is the true and original purpose of mumsnet. Thankyou for this important reminder Oh most magnanimous of posters.

Catsinthecupboard

I agree with you 100% first world attitude.

MummyofTw0 · 31/01/2019 19:43

@Userplusnumbers

Hmmm got to say I'm Totally baffled by being unable/unwilling to cut up own food

Seems like a completely non problem to me. You go out for a meal, majority of meals are eaten via knife/fork

Just seems a little OTT to just not cut it up yourself

See this as such a non issue

Badbadbunny · 31/01/2019 19:46

It's only takeaways that cut your pizza up for you!

Err no! I can't remember ever receiving an uncut pizza ever. Pizza Hut, Bella Italia, Pizza express, F&B, all cut pizzas as far as I can remember.

EnoughSnowAlready · 31/01/2019 19:48

I wonder if it varies by area but I've only had my pizza sliced in restaurants like Pizza Hut. I've never had my pizza pre sliced in Italian restaurants.

Becky9191 · 31/01/2019 19:52

This sounds really silly, surely they would require knives in the kitchen in any case! The worlds gone mad Confused

limitedperiodonly · 31/01/2019 19:53

You go out for a meal, majority of meals are eaten via knife/fork

What an appallingly first world attitude MummyofTw0.

What about the billions of people around the world who don't eat with knives and forks or even via them?

MummyofTw0 · 31/01/2019 19:57

@limitedperiodonly hence my previous comment which I got slated

This is a first world problem

GuidoTheKillerPimp · 31/01/2019 20:05

Oh, FFS.

Pizza wheels were, I imagine, invented to cut the pizza without pulling the cheese off. Yes, you can do it with a steak knife, but it’s messy and annoying, and the toppings go stringy.

Pizza Hut et al and takeaways serve it sliced. If you’re having a real pizza in a real restaurant it’s served whole. Asking for it to be cut is a perfectly reasonable.

You’re not BU, OP. Weatherspoons is.

limitedperiodonly · 31/01/2019 20:06

I've only had my pizza sliced in restaurants like Pizza Hut. I've never had my pizza pre sliced in Italian restaurants.

I think it's a heat-retention thing, rather than an authenticity thing EnoughSnowAlready.

Your deep pan pizza from places like Pizza Hut keeps the heat so can be pre-sliced, but a thin one loses it.

Plus, the deep pan one still looks nice and plump when sliced whereas the thin one looks a mess.

I haven't had a Pizza Hut takeaway for so long. I wonder if they still do those little white plastic three-legged 'tables' that kept the lid of the box from squashing the topping.

We used to keep them because they were the kind of thing you always think will come in handy for something. Gardening or perhaps grouting tiles. Or maybe poisoning the world's oceans.

We had hundreds before we realised that their only useful purpose was to keep the topping of a Super Supreme from sticking to the lid of the box.

myhamsteratefreddiestarr · 31/01/2019 20:09

This thread is hilarious. I have never been served uncut pizza anywhere. It is always precut.

I thought that the whole point of pizza was that you could eat it without a knife and fork, therefore it is cut up, because who would pick up a whole pizza and bite into it Grin.

Plus its hard to cut because of all the stringy cheese .

BlackPrism · 31/01/2019 20:11

@limitedperiodonly they do sill do them, and they're useful as a phone stand

EnoughSnowAlready · 31/01/2019 20:16

Thin pizza is far superior to deep pan anyway. I have nerve damage in my arms an additional issue but I find I have less trouble cutting up Italian restaurant pizzas with the steak knife provided than I do readymade pizza at home. At times though I really struggle to use my hands and I think it isn't too much to ask a restaurant to cut up a pizza when requested, particularly to accommodate people with disabilities.

limitedperiodonly · 31/01/2019 20:17

I don't know where you live @MummyofTw0 but I live in the first world and so does OP and her gran and niece.

We should all strive to understand the problems of people who are less fortunate than ourselves but do you think that should stop us from having a little moan now and then?

Particularly since OP explained that her gran has difficulty cutting up certain foods but is embarrassed to ask her dining companions to do it for her. It seems reasonable to politely ask waiting staff if that could be done in the kitchen.

This is a woman who is less fortunate than you, because though you can cut up your own food easily, she cannot. Can't you find it in your heart to let it go. After all, she is paying for the experience of dining at a Wetherspoons.

Not me, by the way. I have no disabilities but am a clumsy fucker and it would probably be better for my dining companions if my pizza was cut up for me or they were issued with bibs and protective eyewear.

Kkwowo · 31/01/2019 20:35

Yes limitedperiodonly I agree mummyofTwo reply should of been kept to herself, I wonder how she would recact if her children were out for a meal and didn’t give them cutlery!!!! The lady said about her gran couldn’t cut food, shameful attitude to have towards elderly people I am 33 with arthritis which gets worse every day and the shame of asking someone to do something for me that I used to be able to do myself is mortifying and I feel ashamed so I think that the women had every right to put up a post about the pizza not being cut!!!!

quizqueen · 31/01/2019 20:36

They don't serve pizzas pre-cut in Prezzo either so it's not uncommon.

frasersmummy · 31/01/2019 20:39

I sent one back in Frankie and Benny's last week..said ds was having troubles with an ordinary knife on it..could they pizza wheel it..of course not an issue..

So I don't think it's an odd request.

MummyofTw0 · 31/01/2019 20:47

@Kkwowo how I would react if my children weren't given cutlery

I'd just get up and go and get some
Problem solved

Think people are making a mountain out of a molehill

wictional · 31/01/2019 20:48
  1. 8/10 times I have a whole pizza that I have to cut myself when I eat out
  2. the other day I went out for cocktails. Ordered a zombie, which is usually aflame, but the bartender said they weren’t allowed to use the torches anymore. It only takes one idiot in the kitchen!
Calvinsmam · 31/01/2019 20:49

I should have put this in chat Grin

Chiming in from California. My first job was in a pizza restaurant and I cooked & served pizza all through college. It would be Unheard Of to deliver an entire, unsliced pizza to a table or over the counter. And, providing a slicer to a table? What? Not on this side of the pond. Always sliced into 8. He'll, we used that to teach fractions to kindergartners. Gourmet slices are "a thing" here, too. Check out: "Pizza My Heart". Cheers, pizza and love.

Calvinsmam · 31/01/2019 20:51

Can I just say, I’m actually getting pms about this GrinGrin

Tbh I doubt it would have made any difference, I swear there are posters who must just sit there putting 'wetherspoons' into search so that they can come and educate us all out of going!!!

Patroclus · 31/01/2019 20:57

Its cos they wont be on the menu for long and they're too tight to buy pizza cutters.

easyandy101 · 31/01/2019 20:57

This is such a first world problem.

Anyone would think we live there Hmm
