Newborn and custard

Mainly posting here for traffic because I really don’t think I am being at all unreasonable!! I am fuming! I left my 5 week old baby in my husbands ‘capable’ hands for 2 minutes while I went to hang some washing up and when I came downstairs husband was feeding him custard (an M&S microwave custard - not baby food) from his finger! Letting baby suck it from his finger!

I am so angry but do I also need to worry about baby? Husband has got angry saying I have over reacted in being so mad! Baby was sleeping on me a second ago as I took him off of husband but now he has taken him off me and baby is screaming!!

Snuffalo what a truly nasty comment.

Snuffalo · 29/01/2019 22:22

You sound like fun.

YANBU. I don't think a tiny bit of custard would do this, but custard is made with milk. Exposure to straight cow's milk can cause GI bleeding in infants.

WorraLiberty · 29/01/2019 22:24

He sounds like an idiot but I couldn't get fussed over a bit of custard.

Hopefully he won't do it again.

Butteredghost · 29/01/2019 22:24

Good on you OP, for calming down and taking the comments in good humour. We've all been there with newborn worries Smile

EwItsAHooman · 29/01/2019 22:24

Things also haven’t been fantastic between us of late so probably why I am angrier at him than I normally would be

It's probably new baby stress, OP. I remember having an argument with DH at 3am because the baby had thrown up on the duvet and his solution was to strip off the duvet cover and remake the bed with a bare duvet while I wanted a cover on and was standing there in a sick soaked nightie holding the baby while he faffed on instead of taking the baby from me while I got changed, didn't occur to me in a sleep-deprived state to put the baby down and get changed. We didn't want to shout and wake the baby up so stood there hissing at each other "fuck you"/"no fuck YOU"/"you first"/"no YOU first" like a pair of idiots. It's all that bit more magnified when you're tired.

Abra1de · 29/01/2019 22:25

Some scientists are now saying babies need to be weaned earlier, while still breastfed, especially where gluten and nuts are concerned. Six months is too late.
Eight week is too early, obviously, but the baby will be fine.

PIFilm · 29/01/2019 22:27

Abra1de

5 weeks. That’s 35 days.

angelikacpickles · 29/01/2019 22:28

@Bringbackthestripes

Fat and sugar-not a great diet for a 5 week old.

What do you think breastmilk is made of?!?

(Not suggesting custard is a good idea at 5 weeks, but fat and sugar are not "bad").

ItsMEhooray · 29/01/2019 22:29

'Yes I would be absolutely livid. I wouldn’t even give custard to my 7 month old.'

This is why I love MN 😂

Fiddie · 29/01/2019 22:31

FIL looked after DS when he was about ten weeks old and happily told me that he loved chocolate buttons when I got home.

Apparently if you put them on their tongue they dissolve.

I went fucking mental.

Pantsomime · 29/01/2019 22:31

OP I get you, you are shattered, on constant high alert, learning fast, grabbing guidelines like lifelines while you stumble through. The hormones do not magically deliver a sudden knowledge of how to be mum. You are in it together so WTF with the custard? Do you trust him Is probably what you are thinking, he’s either ignored or undermined the things you studied together etc. He’s just been an unthinking idiot and you are right to have a go at him- BUT he didn’t mean to harm baby but probably won’t admit it. Just get him to agree he won’t do it again.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 29/01/2019 22:31

Call 111?

Really?

Baby will be completely fine. No need to overreact.

Mine ate my lipstick at 3 months. I was fuming. The bloody thing cost £25.

LettuceP · 29/01/2019 22:33

OP a baby puts strain on the strongest of relationships. Just remember your baby has two parents and you are both learning and will both make mistakes. I flew off the handle at my dh so much when my first was little and it really knocked his confidence. Glad you found the comments funny and didn't take anything to heart.

Mamaat50 · 29/01/2019 22:34

Magenta46 Did you care about the baby or just the price?

Toddlerteaplease · 29/01/2019 22:36

Massive over reaction. He'll be fine! He's unlikely to have swallowed much custard if any.

AssassinatedBeauty · 29/01/2019 22:37

Feeding a 5 week old custard isn't a mistake or a learning point, it's bloody stupid and he would have known that it was bloody stupid. I don't think it's unreasonable to be cross and to make that obvious. Not suggesting that the OP shouldn't forgive him and move on, assuming he's actually contrite.

Toddlerteaplease · 29/01/2019 22:37

Do not call 111. There is nothing here for them to do but you will provide your call handler will a funny story to tell next time someone asks them "what's the most nutty call you've ever had?"

This!

Snuffalo · 29/01/2019 22:38

@mamaat50 A joke is a display of humour in which words are used within a specific and well-defined narrative structure to make people laugh and is not meant to be taken seriously. It takes the form of a story, usually with dialogue, and ends in a punch line.

SherbertMelon · 29/01/2019 22:40

My eldest, now 21, started on solids at 10 weeks on doctor's advice

Mine too. Probably much earlier than 10 weeks tbh. She had no suck reflex (long story). Only way to feed her was to spoon in baby rice. We were on to scrambled egg by 3 months. I can't imagine a fingertip of custard doing untold damage. Not ideal, obvs, but hardly 111 territory.

Mamaat50 · 29/01/2019 22:40

Whatvthe fuck are you talking about Snuffalo

Snuffalo · 29/01/2019 22:43

@mamaat50 Amazing, well done.
