I woke up this morning in agony. No food in. Only shop across the road is a small corner shop type job. I've just purchased a tinned Princes Mince and Veg pie Blush
Must get to Lidl for a good stock up prior to blooming Brexit or I'll starve to death.
My mission for February is to spend about 100 quid on essentials.

I don’t know what that is but sounds grim.

LadyandGent · 28/01/2019 19:30

PMSL I can assure you it is grim. I used to have them when I was hungover in my 20's lol.

Lips and arseholes pie Grin

Sorry

Auba14 · 28/01/2019 19:30

Is this an insinuation buying a Princes mince and vegetable pie is chavvy?!

Tbh, I would have picked a Fray Bentos Just Steak over any other pie, but then again I'm a 10/10 chav 😉

LadyandGent · 28/01/2019 19:31

It comes in a round tin and you cook it in the oven. The pastry rises. Meat grissly, but needs must. Fray Bentos are a similar brand.

Oh christ I haven't eaten it yet! And I'm feeling nauseous. I thought something hot might settle my stomach.

When I was house sharing in my youth i made a 'dinner' consisting of tinned prince's mince, tinned boiled potatoes, tinned peas and carrots. It was awful but we were unbelievably skint. Still laugh about it wenever it crops up in conversation Grin

Toptheginup · 28/01/2019 19:38

Extra points of you went to the shop in pj's and dressing gown Wink

CoastalLife · 28/01/2019 19:43

Never had Prince's but Fray Bentos pies are my absolute guilty pleasure. I love the gooey pastry under the crispy bit. Proper comfort food. This is making me hungry now.

LuckyAmy1986 · 28/01/2019 19:44

I have never had a Fray Bentos - feel like I am missing out!

limitedperiodonly · 28/01/2019 19:54

I loved Fray Bentos pies as a child with mash and brown sauce. nd yes, CoastalLife, I loved that soft beige pastry under the crispy top. I'd have at least one a week.

I had one after a gap of about 20 years and it was very disappointing. I swear they changed the formula. This was not what I remembered. I also used to love individual suet pastry steak and kidney puddings from Sainsbury's that you would just place in water about two thirds of the way up let simmer for about 20 minutes.

PositiveVibez · 28/01/2019 19:56

Lips and arseholes pie

Not forgetting it will also contain eyeholes and earholes 🤣

RedHatsDoNotSuitMe · 28/01/2019 19:56

it's a thumbs down from me, but I hate pies in any case. In your case, I'd have stocked up on crisps, so you're probably one step ahead of me.

Hope you enjoyed it.

LadyandGent · 28/01/2019 19:56

Well I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. I went in pjs, but put a long coat over me. I think I hit the jackpot with chavvy today. Oh well. Got nurofen to top up the paracetamol as body in such pain so feeling a bit better actually!

GraceMarks · 28/01/2019 19:58

Tinned pies are quite expensive for a single meal, so I wouldn't say they were chavvy. Goblin tinned hamburgers in gravy, on the other hand, sustained me through my finals and were exactly as revolting as they sound.

limitedperiodonly · 28/01/2019 19:59

I got an email in work about people's favourite '70s and '80s comfort foods. I deleted it but Findus Crispy pancakes were on it. I loved those. The beef and onion ones were my favourite but I didn't mind the chicken and mushroom ones.

Do you remember Toast Toppers in a jar? We never had those. They looked like sick.

LadyandGent · 28/01/2019 20:02

No, but I do recall vomiting at corned beef in a tin with the jelly all over it. God almighty, how did we survive.

SuperSuperSuper · 28/01/2019 20:03

Ooooh Findus crispy pancakes. I liked the cheese ones as a student. Wish they'd bring them back.

GraceMarks · 28/01/2019 20:04

The chicken and mushroom crispy pancakes looked like a deep-fried cyst. Revolting things. You can still get Toast Toppers (or some variation on them) at the frozen food shop near me but I haven't tried them - I can get a pizza for almost the same price...

Itwasntme101 · 28/01/2019 20:04

I've had tinned burgers in gravy from nettos GraceMarks. It would be when my parents were skint and my mum would get a bag of potatoes to do chips. Thought they were amazing then, the thought of tinned burgers is grim now.

Auba14 · 28/01/2019 20:04

Toast Toppers and Crispy Pancakes were the bomb!!

I was in Sainsbury's a couple of months back and asked if they still sold them but apparently Heinz discontinued them years ago.

Crispy Pancakes were never the same since they added sweetcorn to the chicken and mushroom ones. I'm sure you can still buy them, and now I have a craving for them!

Livpool · 28/01/2019 20:05

I only found out about Fray Bentos pies last year and I am 38! When my friend mentioned going home for Fray Bentos. thought it was her new boyfriend 😂

Malibucyprus · 28/01/2019 20:07

@Super they still make Findus crispy pancakes, in fact they’re £1 in Asda (according to a friend)

MawkishTwaddle · 28/01/2019 20:07

All the above used to be the food of the gods before the powers that be decided we all need to get healthy and nicked all the salt out of them.

Bastards.

limitedperiodonly · 28/01/2019 20:09

OP on NYE I put a long sheepskin coat over my pyjamas to watch the fireworks at the end of the road. I don't think anyone noticed. What's the point of getting dressed? I did have proper boots on though.

I've also done the same thing when I had to drag myself out briefly when I was Patient Zero in the Aussie Flu epidemic of autumn/winter 2017. I felt so ill that when I got back I left my coat on the floor and a few steps later I left one boot and then the other on the way to crawl into bed.
