I woke up this morning in agony. No food in. Only shop across the road is a small corner shop type job. I've just purchased a tinned Princes Mince and Veg pie Blush
Must get to Lidl for a good stock up prior to blooming Brexit or I'll starve to death.
My mission for February is to spend about 100 quid on essentials.

Waffles80 I don't agree. I am of working class origin. Am I middle class now? I don't know. There are aspects of my lifestyle which are. Probably to some people I am posh and to other people I'm not.

I spoke to someone today in the course of my work who is not like me. Neither is she like my brother or sister and is not like my parents. I wouldn't call her a chav because that is unkind and unnecessary but she and her partner and friends are not like us at all. They are not necessarily bad people but they are not like us.

I can say that because it is true.

Jebuschristchocolatebar · 28/01/2019 21:40

I used to love the chicken korma in a tin from m&s. It was all kinds of weird but so tasty.

CoastalLife · 28/01/2019 21:45

Hold up. You can boil a Fray Bentos? I've always taken the lid off and put it in the oven. Do you get 100% gooey pastry (which is the best bit, after all) with the boiling method?? This could be a game changer.

CoastalLife · 28/01/2019 21:48

Talking of food in tins...have they stopped making tinned sponge puddings? They were a staple when I was at school but when I came over all nostalgic and tried to find one the other day, all they had was crappy little microwavable pots.

Willow2017 · 28/01/2019 21:50

You can still get steam puds in tins Coastal

Willow2017 · 28/01/2019 21:52

Rafabella
Corned beef and stovies is the food of the gods but only the way my mum made stovies with sliced tatties😀

Yerroblemom1923 · 28/01/2019 21:55

I hope you wore Ugg(ly) boots too, OP!

Waffles80 · 28/01/2019 21:57

So you think your privilege now allows you to judge and condemn others who aren’t like you. Sneering condescension. Awful @limitedperiodonly.

Maybe you should think about where your prejudices are and why?

walkingonsunshine71 · 28/01/2019 22:17

Well I'm not a bit chavvy, but dp is working away for 2 days, and after reading this thread I'm going to get myself a steak fray bentos pie tomorrow and will probably eat the lot...maybe even out of the tin, so there 😀

limitedperiodonly · 28/01/2019 22:18

I don't think I'm privileged and I'm not judging or condemning people at all Waffles80. That's all in your head. I'm just saying they are different to me. Maybe you should think about your prejudices

walkingonsunshine71 · 28/01/2019 22:19

Actually I did stagger out of Iceland recently with my shopping in a sports direct bag for life, hmm...

emilybrontescorsett · 28/01/2019 22:20

I loved the tinned sponge puddings. I agree that you don't seem to see them now. Treacle was my favourite.

limitedperiodonly · 28/01/2019 22:24

CoastalLife you can boil anything in a tin as long as you keep it under water. That's how you make banoffi pie from a boiled tin of condensed milk that turns to toffee - that that's not chavvy - it was a mainstay of Fergie and other posh chalet girls like her in Verbier.

But when it gets below that there is danger it it will explode showering the kitchen with cheap food and shrapnel.

But like you, I prefer to take the lid of the Fray Bentos tin and bake it.

limitedperiodonly · 28/01/2019 22:26

I like Iceland and miss tinned sponge puddings with Birds custard

BlueEyedBengal · 28/01/2019 22:30

I used to love these things back when I was too innocent to know the rubbish that goes into them. I would get them served with a dollop of smash instant mash potato swimming in lots of butter! And tinned steam pud and birds custard.

TheCowboy · 28/01/2019 22:34

Fray Bentos are the bomb.

At uni, a friend kept the tin and used it as a mini baking tray. Such resourcefulness. Never ceased to make me smile thinking about it.

EchoCardioGran · 28/01/2019 22:38

I still eat tinned mushy peas, (because I am too lazy to make them the traditional way). A treat with a steak and kidney pudding, I think.
Harry Ramsden's mushies...by far the best.

JacksonPillock · 28/01/2019 22:45

How much did it cost?

jessstan2 · 28/01/2019 22:45

Nothing chavvy about that, you weren't well enough to go further and you were hungry.

Hope you enjoyed the pie! Nowt wrong with a pie.

tillytrotter1 · 28/01/2019 22:50

If you'r worrying about being 'chavvy' then you must be 11!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 28/01/2019 22:52

I used to share a flat with a guy who pretty much only ate Fray Bentos pies when I was a student. He had them with tinned peas, and used to say the vegetables balanced out the pie.

limitedperiodonly · 28/01/2019 22:55

A PP asks above "What's the point of getting dressed?" - because you're outside your house, so you should be dressed; so the rest of the world knows you're not a scratty piece of scum, that's why.

I think that was me ADropofReality.Your judgement seems a bit harsh. Are you feeling okay?

SluggishSnail · 28/01/2019 23:13

I did buy tobacco though! Put that in your pipe and shove it up yer arse.

Not sure you've got this smoking thing sussed :)

BabynamehelpArgh · 29/01/2019 00:10

Love a fray bentos

LadyandGent · 29/01/2019 00:36

My pie cost 2.49.
I'm classy.
I just so happened to be chatting to a date who was on about cooking lamb tagine for himself and he asked me what was for dinner, so I told him I was too ill to cook (true). I didn't tell him about my pie. He's a chef. Lying by omission lol.
Which goes to show you folks, when your fella telling you he's too ill to cook, he's probably tucking into a manky pie.
