I woke up this morning in agony. No food in. Only shop across the road is a small corner shop type job. I've just purchased a tinned Princes Mince and Veg pie Blush
Must get to Lidl for a good stock up prior to blooming Brexit or I'll starve to death.
My mission for February is to spend about 100 quid on essentials.

Findus crispy pancakes are grim these days. The minced beef ones used to be the absolute food of all the assembled gods from every pantheon. I was gutted to find out they’d killed them. Gutted I tell you. My inner student self is refusing to accept it.

Willow2017 · 28/01/2019 20:47

Frey Bentos steak pies are fab. The pastry is awesome. Ok they have a lot less meat than.they used to have but ds's and i dont care its our occaisional guilty pleasure.

Used to get the puddings when i was a kid too. Loved them. Must seek them out on next weeks shopping day😀

Oh and a pot noodle is strangely addictive you can go months without one then 'bang' you need something quick and easy and only a pot noodle will do.😁

Crispy pancakes were great when a kid too but lethal for burning you if were too impatient!

SoftBlocks · 28/01/2019 20:47

I want to add Fray Bentos pies to our Brexit stash but DH is objecting. I’m going to get some anyway.

Chottie · 28/01/2019 20:48

I've never had a tinned pie either. Do you cook it in the tin?

JoyceDivision · 28/01/2019 20:49

Goblin pies

In a tin you had to boil...the soggiest saddest gluey excuse of pastry and slop ever seen.

Amazing

EchoCardioGran · 28/01/2019 20:50

YouokHun fair do's, it isn't a word I use, so I take your point. Would not be happy if it was being used against other people.

Mawkish Yep, definitely could not eat a whole Rees-Mogg, a bit greasy for me. Bring on the Fray Bentos.

Willow2017 · 28/01/2019 20:53

You take the lid off first then cook as normal, its no different from a foil , tin or ceramic pie dish.

EchoCardioGran · 28/01/2019 20:54

Chottie you have to pierce the tin before placing in water in the pan or they explode when they get very hot.

LadyandGent · 28/01/2019 20:55

Yes, you peel the lid of the tin, then stick it in the oven for 25 minutes in the tin. The pastry rises and there you go. A heart-attack in a tin.
Mine was mostly gravy and pastry. 1000 calories I reckon lol.

Or in oven see Willow.
It's been a while. Smile

Silvercatowner · 28/01/2019 21:00

Coeliac here - I crave Fray Bentos pies.

brizzledrizzle · 28/01/2019 21:03

Not at all chavvy but perhaps lacking in taste somewhat Grin

GabsAlot · 28/01/2019 21:04

i need a chicken fray bentos now

limitedperiodonly · 28/01/2019 21:07

I have no idea, but i yhink you're a bit of a prat for casually banding the word 'chavy' about.

There's always one

I think it's a British thing, I've never knowingly seen one in an Irish supermarket

What does that mean Juells?

Parisbun · 28/01/2019 21:14

It must be a Fray bentos steak and kidney pie though. Princes are definitely not the same thing at all. Dont you have to take the pastry off and cook that separately?
But yes we lived on Goblin puddings and toast toppers. Tinned potatoes and cheap noodles. Birds eye potato waffles and crispy pancakes for a special tea.
For very special dinners we had Vesta Chicken chow mein with the extra classy crisped noodles and lumps of vaguely chickenish colour but not chickenish taste .

Actually when I say 'lived' I mean we still do from time to time since you can still all of these things - except toast toppers . Left to my own devices i will opt for my Vesta meal in a box from time to time.

sushisuperstar · 28/01/2019 21:14

What about the tinned all day breakfast? 🥴

SheWoreBlueVelvet · 28/01/2019 21:17

Waitrose pie 304 calories per 100gms
Fray Bentos 132 calories per 100gms

Practically diet food.

And everyone knows what you mean when you say Chavy.
It’s not working class or poor ...it’s lacking in style and rough round the edges..
I’d say the TOWIE crew are Chavs and are clearly neither working class or poor.

LadyandGent · 28/01/2019 21:18

I'm filth? No I'm unwell. And I walked to the shop across the road, bought my pie and left. I don't think I upset society.
I did buy tobacco though! Put that in your pipe and shove it up yer arse.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 28/01/2019 21:18

I didn't know Princes made tinned pies, but I did use to love a Fray Bentos minced beef & onion pie! Not had one in years now though.

As far as the 'chav' scale goes (no offence intended) - you get more points for the pyjamas than the pie Grin.

Did you also get some Frosty Jack's & a packet of Rizlas?

Waffles80 · 28/01/2019 21:19

Thank fuck there is always one @limitedperiodonly

That, or pejorative and harmful terms would just be bandied around here day and night.

I wish @MNHQ would ban this disgusting classist word.

Oh, please fan me before I swoon.

This kind of thing is so precious. I live in a very posh area. One of the very many delis - this one is Italian - sells a tin of sausages, beans and tomatoes.

It doesn't even have a paper label, the label is printed straight on to the tin in Italian. I've never been tempted to buy one - but have queued up with my fellow English people for various salamis, hams, and cheeses, pasta and roasted artichokes.

Is it okay for Italian people to eat tinned food and bad when British people do it?

Rafabella · 28/01/2019 21:28

My mum used to serve up crumbled corned beef, mixed into hot potato mash, with pickled beetroot on the side. We literally threw it down our necks - it didn't touch the sides we loved it so much. Turns my stomach at the sheer thought of it now. Confused
