AIBU to think this whole Night Nurse thread is bonkers?!

FrillyPig · 27/01/2019 21:48

Googled “why is Night Nurse green” and stumbled on this very old MN thread - almost every reply is someone who seems to experience a reaction more akin to heroin rather than good old Night Nurse! People gripping the mattress, being knocked out on half a dose, too out of it THE NEXT DAY to look after their kids?! Recommending for only when dying of flu. I’ve got a cold and had some last night, as I always do when I have a cold because colds suck. I’ve never been off my face, never felt weird the next day etc - all I get is that I feel a bit more sleepy and my nose doesn’t wake me up 40 times a night. AIBU to think that maybe half these people were exaggerating......

Ps the original question was wondering why someone was refused it - if anyone cares it’s becuase the cough suppressant can increase the risk of paracetamol related damage in alcoholics, so alcoholics really do need to stay clear and not because NN is some kind of green heroin Grin

Sorry should have said “paracetamol related LIVER damage* so obvs alcoholics are more at risk as their liver is already likely damaged.

I've never had it, but a quick glance at that thread makes me want to! I don't think I'm that susceptible to medication in general though.

Princessmushroom · 27/01/2019 21:51

I buy American night nurse and yep, it’s like a hardcore drug

OMGithurts · 27/01/2019 21:53

American NN is something else, UK NN is just day nurse with no caffeine but the Americans put some sort of sleep medication in theirs (As I discovered when I was supposed to share a.drive from Miami to Key West, and could only slump, drooling, in the front passenger seat).

Never tried NN. Off to go and read the thread. If it knocks you out I might get a bottle.

Impicciona · 27/01/2019 21:56

We buy Italian Night Nurse (Medinite) and it's like taking 20mg of diazepam. Grin

Fairtatas · 27/01/2019 21:56

I cannot take it if have something to do the next day! Still feel overwhelmingly tired and feel like the worst kind of hangover the next day after half a dose!

ButDoYouAvocado · 27/01/2019 21:57

Knocks me right out. Day nurse i will knock back all day long but you can keep Night Nurse! And im not one of these 'oh I only have one sherry at Christmas' types either. I feel so groggy the next day iymt outweighs any benefit.

ElizabethMainwaring · 27/01/2019 21:57

UK night nurse is absolutely not the same as day nurse without caffeine. It does knock you out.

DannyWallace · 27/01/2019 21:58

It doesn't affect me now (I'm sure they changed something in it about 5 years ago or so).

But years ago it was my go to cold/virus remedy.
But it would knock me out, make me sleep for about 13 hours!! I could NEVER take it if I was working the next morning (I was HCP).
More than once I even woke up with bruises -turns out I'd get up to pee and just walk in to things while basically sleep walking to the bathroom!!

However, after a sleep like that, I always felt better!! Smile

SherlockSays · 27/01/2019 21:58

I bloody love Night Nurse Grin the foreign versions sound even better!

SallyWD · 27/01/2019 21:58

I've only had it once (in UK) and I was a complete zombie the next day. I slept about 12 or 13 hours (which is not like me at all) and my friend eventually had to wake me up because she was so worried. The whole day I felt like I wasn't properly awake and it was horrible. Really hard to function. Never take it since.

WineAndTiramisu · 27/01/2019 21:58

The UK one has promethazine in it which makes you drowsy, what does the American one have in it? Can't seem to find it on Google

OMGithurts · 27/01/2019 22:00

Does it? I have never had UK NN. I didn't know it had sleepy meds. Can you just buy it?

user1473878824 · 27/01/2019 22:00

Why is it green though?!!!!?!

JeffJarrett · 27/01/2019 22:00

The foreign version does sound better! I will have to stock up when I'm in the States in August Grin

But our version... it's great for getting a good sleep when you're full of a snotty cold, though I won't take it if I can't get a solid 8 hours (or more) or I'll feel like death the next day.

cestlavielife · 27/01/2019 22:01

It has promethazine also sold as phenergan

Promethazine is a first-generation antihistamine. It is used to treat allergies, trouble sleeping, and nausea. It may help with some symptoms associated with the common cold. It may also be used for sedating people who are agitated or anxious.Wikipedia

Hedwigsradio · 27/01/2019 22:01

I woke up on the kitchen floor after having it years ago. Then again paracetamol makes me sleepy so glad I've never tried drugs I'd probably od just looking at them.

Arriettyborrower · 27/01/2019 22:01

Oh god yeah! I took night nurse one afternoon as a teenager about 27 years ago as didn’t have Day nurse.

My dad couldn’t wake me at 4pm and was convinced I’d taken a shit load of class A’s!

It was ace!

Siameasy · 27/01/2019 22:02

Years ago I felt it had that effect but I’ve not taken it since having DC/BFing. Used to find it very effective and defo knocked me out

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 27/01/2019 22:05

Only had it once in the 80s, 24 hours I was out. Got it for adult ds last year - never touched him.

ChiaraRimini · 27/01/2019 22:06

Promethazine (ingredient in NN) is an antihistamine which makes you drowsy. It's a non addictive sleeping pill. Doesn't suit everyone but worth trying for sleep problems. I don't know why it's not more widely prescribed TBH.

Lovewineandchocs · 27/01/2019 22:08

wineandtiramisu I think the US version of Night Nurse is NyQuil, which contains acetaminophen, doxylamine and dextromethamorphen (or something!). I’m not sure what they are but they knock you out! We always bring this back from the US or Canada when we go. I’ve never tried Night nurse.

megletthesecond · 27/01/2019 22:08

I'm on that thread Grin.
9 years on it still knocks me out. I take 5ml (a quarter dose) and feel the effects the next day, I walk to work. Works a treat on a cold though.

tinkerbellla · 27/01/2019 22:09

This thread is making me laugh! I have a bad cold now so I'm going to indulge tomorrow Grin.
