AIBU to think this whole Night Nurse thread is bonkers?!

FrillyPig · 27/01/2019 21:48

Googled “why is Night Nurse green” and stumbled on this very old MN thread - almost every reply is someone who seems to experience a reaction more akin to heroin rather than good old Night Nurse! People gripping the mattress, being knocked out on half a dose, too out of it THE NEXT DAY to look after their kids?! Recommending for only when dying of flu. I’ve got a cold and had some last night, as I always do when I have a cold because colds suck. I’ve never been off my face, never felt weird the next day etc - all I get is that I feel a bit more sleepy and my nose doesn’t wake me up 40 times a night. AIBU to think that maybe half these people were exaggerating......

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/general_health/1053701-What-is-it-about-Night-Nurse

Ps the original question was wondering why someone was refused it - if anyone cares it’s becuase the cough suppressant can increase the risk of paracetamol related damage in alcoholics, so alcoholics really do need to stay clear and not because NN is some kind of green heroin Grin

by the way don't be fooled by zzzquil(sleep aid) its just liquid benadryl/diphenhydramine
go to dollar general and get 100 diphens for a buck

bitchwitch · 28/01/2019 04:40

probably

xWallToWallBastardsx · 28/01/2019 05:06

My sis lives in Canada. I might see if she will send me some Nyquil. I can't sleep at the moment and it's driving me mad.

In one of my favourite books the author says that her mother used to sedate herself using Aspirin. This was in the 30s/40s so maybe they changed the ingredients.

KirstyAllsoppsFatterTwin · 28/01/2019 05:28

That's like people who are convinced a slug of Call will make a child sleep.

It won't. It will relieve pain and lower temperature, which of course will help an unwell child to sleep more comfortably, but it will do precisely fuck all in itself to make an otherwise perfectly well child fall asleep.

But so many mothers of babies believe otherwise, it's quite bewildering. We'd all be dropping off at our desks or at the wheel of our car every time we popped a couple of paracetamol for a headache otherwise. Confused

KirstyAllsoppsFatterTwin · 28/01/2019 05:29

slug of CALPOL

SimplySteve · 28/01/2019 05:37

I'll read the thread! After I've just popped to Tesco for some Night Nurse obviously Grin

SimplySteve · 28/01/2019 05:39

Each 20 ml dose contains Paracetamol 1000 mg, Promethazine Hydrochloride 20 mg and Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide 15 mg. Contains ethanol (alcohol) 18% v/v, sodium and glucose.

That's a pretty impressive cocktail for something you can buy over the counter! Wow!

FireCrotch · 28/01/2019 05:44

No need to ask sisters to send the good stuff. You might find it www.discounthealthproducts.com/product/nyquil-liquid-cold-flu-relief-12oz-vicks/here
Hope that works.

SimplySteve · 28/01/2019 05:45

Aha, the American version also contains doxylamine, a strong antihistamine that's very good at knocking you out. I buy doxylamine pills from the States every few months and they are veeeery effective for insomnia....

Try again...

Ok how do you do the link thingy please?

floribunda18 · 28/01/2019 05:51

It is absolutely brilliant for knocking you out when you have the sort of cold with a cough that keeps you up all night. Also original drowsy Benilyn. Yes, I would need strong coffee the next day, but it has helped me get over the worst bit of colds several times.

I haven't had a bad cold like that in a long time though now.

ItsThisOneThing · 28/01/2019 05:55

Please be careful using night nurse as it's easy to forget it has paracetamol in it.

My friend is a doctor and had a patient who died after taking a load of cold & flu medicines together over 3 or 4 days when she had a bad cold. She was following the individual dosage but forgetting they all contained paracetamol.

It was so sad, she was only a young girl, my friend was devastated :(

CantChoose · 28/01/2019 05:58

@ChiaraRimini it's very widely prescribed for sleep issues where non-pharmacological measures have failed. It's also available over the counter.

I love night nurse but took it for my daytime sleep while working night shifts with a terrible cold. My sleep was more disturbed than it would have been in the day and I kept waking up really disorientated. I wouldn't use it that way again.

floribunda18 · 28/01/2019 05:59

Yes, they usually remind you about the possible paracetamol overdose when you buy it, or anything else which has paracetamol as an ingredient.

VerbenaGirl · 28/01/2019 06:19

I only ever took it once and was totally out of it. Akin to when I was given morphine after an op.

PeroniZuchini · 28/01/2019 06:45

Wtf?! I gulp it back when I have a cold and it makes me sleep a little better but not that well! But then I have to take Nytol regularly as I’m borderline insomniac at times.

SinglePringle · 28/01/2019 08:55

If only it still knocked me out when I have a cold. The old version used to (godsend) but the new one doesn’t.

The American version you say,..?!

MrsMcGarry · 28/01/2019 09:06

I do think it might be a matter of sensitivity.

I had a quite druggy period when younger, and due to chronic illness now have to occasionally take codeine, and be given fentanyl, and none of them particularly affect me. But Night Nurse totally did - only taken it once, got a decent nights sleep, but had to drive with window open on school run the next day. Parked in supermarket carpark and feel asleep for half an hour, then when I managed to get home I slept for another 3
I did then wake and feel absolutely fine and remarkably well rested

creamcheeseandlox · 28/01/2019 09:24

I found it knocks me out but if I happen to wake in the night on it it makes you feel horrid. Irritable and a bit shaky.

longwayoff · 28/01/2019 09:28

Read in Cheryl Barrymore's autobiography (vicious Christmas present) about life with delightful Mr Barrymore. Apparently they used to have Night Nurse parties. Found this mind boggingly horrible to think about so have permanently foregone the dubious delights of Night Nurse. Shudder.

Iooselipssinkships · 28/01/2019 10:15

I've recently had a bit of a problem with NN. I was necking an entire bottle every other night for sleep and that's no exaggeration. It's only until I realised it's 10,000mg of paracetamol a bottle that I've stopped.
Looselips is stupid. Don't be Looselips.

Galwaydags · 28/01/2019 10:47

What on Earth is a NightNurse party? Does everyone just put on the pyjamas and go to bed? Rock n roll!

Limensoda · 28/01/2019 11:07

It's brilliant for getting a good night's sleep when you have a cold. I love it. Never had any problems but do sometimes feel a bit groggy when I wake up.

Eliza9917 · 28/01/2019 13:30

Where do you get american night nurse?

Ngaio2 · 28/01/2019 17:42

Not a great one for pill taking as I have a sensitive stomach (any kind of anti-inflammatory is out) and with fibromyalgia the pain often makes it hard for me to sleep more than a hour at a time (another symptom of fm, I know). What would posters suggest I try — Night Nurse or NyQuil?
I don’t mind if I’m not knocked out but don’t want to feel too groggy in the morning. Thanks
