AIBU to think this whole Night Nurse thread is bonkers?!

Googled “why is Night Nurse green” and stumbled on this very old MN thread - almost every reply is someone who seems to experience a reaction more akin to heroin rather than good old Night Nurse! People gripping the mattress, being knocked out on half a dose, too out of it THE NEXT DAY to look after their kids?! Recommending for only when dying of flu. I’ve got a cold and had some last night, as I always do when I have a cold because colds suck. I’ve never been off my face, never felt weird the next day etc - all I get is that I feel a bit more sleepy and my nose doesn’t wake me up 40 times a night. AIBU to think that maybe half these people were exaggerating......

Ps the original question was wondering why someone was refused it - if anyone cares it’s becuase the cough suppressant can increase the risk of paracetamol related damage in alcoholics, so alcoholics really do need to stay clear and not because NN is some kind of green heroin Grin

I love night nurse. When I can't sleep it knocks you out like a light! But doesn't work if you take it every night though.

Galwaydags · 28/01/2019 00:00

Paramol knocks out too.Smile

RaininSummer · 28/01/2019 00:01

I am wondering if the recipe has changed as I haven't taken night nurse in the past 40 years as it always kept me awake. I wonder if it did used to have caffeine in it.

DerelictWreck · 28/01/2019 00:32

Are you allowed to bring loads of meds back from the USA? Would like to get some of this stuff when I go later in the year but surely there are restrictions??

jessstan2 · 28/01/2019 00:40

Ilovepixie, Night Nurse has never really knocked me out though it has been comfortably soothing when I've had a cold.

I have some atm because husband had bad cold and cough around Christmas time; I will take a swig and if I don't come back for a week you'll know it's had the desired effect.

ZZzzzzzz

Ollivander84 · 28/01/2019 00:51

@Galwaydags they still sell it! https://www.chemistdirect.co.uk/j-collis-browne-apos-s-mixture/prd-33ke

accendo · 28/01/2019 00:59

I wonder if we have anything comparable in Oz? Restavit maybe?

AlbertWinestein · 28/01/2019 01:05

I know someone who had a hardcore drinking problem and couldn’t afford rehab so used NyQuil (US version of NN) to get through the shaking stage. I vowed I was never going to touch it after that!

AlbertWinestein · 28/01/2019 01:06

It wasn’t me taking the NYQuil by the way. That reads more ambiguously than I’d like! 😄

SpringForEver · 28/01/2019 01:07

I haven't taken it for years, mainly due to sleeping through the day after I took it or feeling too groggy to function. I prefer the cold symptoms or to take something less potent. I hated the feeling of being drugged.

cinderfeckinrella · 28/01/2019 01:18

Yep I took nn as a teenager after having flu...locked my Dad and Stepmum out in rain. They rang doorbell for an hour...completely wiped out.

5pmsomewhere · 28/01/2019 01:27

NN tastes hideous. I have, however, just taken my two tablets of promathazine hydrochloride which I am prescribed for my insomnia. Fabulous meds that used to be available over the counter for kids as well as adults! (Ask anyone who was a parent in the ‘80’s with a child who didn’t sleep...they’ll tell you all about Phenagern). If NN does contain that then people who are susceptible to meds might struggle the next day...conceivably.

AcrossthePond55 · 28/01/2019 01:27

NyQuil is 10% alcohol (wine is around 12% depending on variety) so combined with the antihistamine it's not surprising it can knock someone on their arse. I think they make it taste so nasty so alcoholics don't chug it.

My favourite treatment for a cold is a hot shower, a dose of NyQuil, and some Vap-O-Cream on my upper chest. Sleep like a baby and wake up feeling great.

Iloveautumnleaves · 28/01/2019 01:41

How did I forget about NN? 😳

I have had the worst cold I’ve had in years this past week....arghhh. Might take some in a minute, I don’t have to get up toooo early. I usually wake up at 5:30, but I don’t have to be up until 6:30. 6:45 at a complete push.

Hmmmm....

Bellagio40 · 28/01/2019 02:27

I have a bottle of NyQuil here. The ingredients are:

Acetaminophen 650mg - Pain reliever
Dextromethorphan HBr 20mg - Cough suppressant
Doxylamine succinate 12.5mg - Antihistamine
Phenylephrine HC1 10mg - Nasal decongestant

I take it whenever I have a cold. It certainly helps with the symptoms but it doesn’t knock me out, I still wake up every three hours

jessstan2 · 28/01/2019 02:32

Well I'm still awake! Nearly an hour since I took a dose of Night Nurse.

I have some Collis Browns mixture, got it year before last while I was away and had stomach upset. Apparently that contains a little morphine so may have some sedative effect. I'll investigate.

ineedtostopbeingsolazy · 28/01/2019 02:36

My dd was prescribed phenergan (promethazine) for sleep issues she was so out of it she would be asleep all the next day waking up at about 4 in the afternoon and was still groggy awful stuff - for her anyway

ineedtostopbeingsolazy · 28/01/2019 02:46

*I'm guessing it's the same people who claim that a single Neurofen knocks them out - or a non drowsy antihistamine.

Mixture of mild sleepiness and placebo effect. They believe it's going to knock them out, so it does, especially as bad colds/flu make you tired anyway.*

Not at all. Considering the conconction of meds' that dd is on and has been on as well as some drugs and alcohol issues, phenergan was bad! Definitely not placebo or mild sleepiness.

cavycavy · 28/01/2019 03:12

Oh syndol (original formula) how I miss thee and your warm fuzzy glow.

todayiwin · 28/01/2019 03:13

Oh syndol was THE best 💯

kateandme · 28/01/2019 03:36

can you buy it over the counter

Rtmhwales · 28/01/2019 04:00

I was so confused about American Night Nurse because I've never heard of it (being American and all) but now understand you mean NyQuil. Yeah that stuff will knock you right out. It's the best.

To the poster asking if you can bring a bunch of it back - I think you'd find it hard to buy a bunch of it in the US to begin with. You have to show ID when you buy it and they log your details and it can trigger a warning at a different pharmacy if you're trying to stock up as people use an active ingredient in it to make meth. They won't let you buy more than one bottle at a time.

I've was taking Night Nurse every night about about a week, last month due to a rotten cough and cold making my usual sleep disruption even worse than normal . My God, it's AMAZING stuff. Works a treat if you need a solid 8-10 hours sleep but you do feel on a bit of a go-slow the next morning.

It's become one of those things I don't ever want to not have within my reach, just in case.
