AIBU to think this whole Night Nurse thread is bonkers?!

FrillyPig · 27/01/2019 21:48

Googled “why is Night Nurse green” and stumbled on this very old MN thread - almost every reply is someone who seems to experience a reaction more akin to heroin rather than good old Night Nurse! People gripping the mattress, being knocked out on half a dose, too out of it THE NEXT DAY to look after their kids?! Recommending for only when dying of flu. I’ve got a cold and had some last night, as I always do when I have a cold because colds suck. I’ve never been off my face, never felt weird the next day etc - all I get is that I feel a bit more sleepy and my nose doesn’t wake me up 40 times a night. AIBU to think that maybe half these people were exaggerating......

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/general_health/1053701-What-is-it-about-Night-Nurse

Ps the original question was wondering why someone was refused it - if anyone cares it’s becuase the cough suppressant can increase the risk of paracetamol related damage in alcoholics, so alcoholics really do need to stay clear and not because NN is some kind of green heroin Grin

Night Nurse is magical stuff. It really does knock me out and make me feel like a zombie the next day. And I have, in the past, had some strong pain relief in my time. Night Nurse made me feel more knocked out than a shot of diamorphine.

Islands81 · 27/01/2019 22:12

Has anyone else noticed that it’s EXACTLY the same colour and consistency as Harpic Plus toilet cleaner? Just saying...

And yes, it knocks me out within minutes when I take it. Tastes so vile that I only take if desperate.

Insomnibrat · 27/01/2019 22:13

Night Nurse is absolutely NOT ' just Day Nurse minus the caffeine'....

Dimedollar · 27/01/2019 22:13

I love it, if I've had prolonged trouble sleeping then I take it for a couple of nights, seems to get me back in the sleep rhythm.

Obviously have to be careful not to become too dependent on it and continue using it past a few nights.

Iruka · 27/01/2019 22:15

It doesn’t affect me but the antihistamines in it are nothing compared to what I take every day so I have probably built up an immunity

rightreckoner · 27/01/2019 22:16

Once or twice a year when you have a terrible cold NN and DN are invaluable. NN knocks you right out and DN revs you up so you can get through the day. They are so effective that they are worth treating with caution imho.

They make Lemsip look stupid Grin

jessstan2 · 27/01/2019 22:17

I'v never been knocked out by Night Nurse, I suppose if you swigged half a bottle it might have that effect but just normal doses do very little except bring temperature down and ease symptoms like it is supposed to.

Mollypolly2610 · 27/01/2019 22:17

I was really ill a few years ago (had pneumonia but the doctor hadn’t spotted it yet) and had had a couple of vodkas on a Friday night. My daughter arrived home from the USA with NyQuil. I took some to relieve my symptoms, went upstairs for a pee and fell into the bath!! Couldn’t get out till my DH came to bed. Couldn’t stop laughing but it made me so woozy!!!

Aridane · 27/01/2019 22:18

It is fucking awesome - knocks you out and gives you solid sleep when you are feeling beyond crap

Aridane · 27/01/2019 22:19

Oh - and if you take it during the day, it's like being a doddering zombie

MotorcycleMayhem · 27/01/2019 22:21

I used to swig Benylin from the bottle to help me sleep after a night shift if I was especially wired. It has dextromethorphan in it. I only needed about 10-20ml to send me off, no long term effects or other weird issues, just helping to get to sleep in the first place.

Now I've discovered Covonia do a Night formula with dextromethorphan and diphenhydramine in it too. That seriously knocks me out - ideal when I had a ridiculous cough keeping me awake last year.

EdWinchester · 27/01/2019 22:23

Does nothing for me - UK or us version.

Mind you, gp prescribed me diazepam after a car accident and injured shoulder and that makes not a jot of difference to me, even if I take double the dose 🤷‍♀️

Maelstrop · 27/01/2019 22:26

I took the tablets when I was really ill a few weeks ago. It didn't make me as dopey as usual, but I wasn't getting up at 6 to go to work. I used Phenergan to re-set my sleep pattern.

There's a pill called Sleepaid you can get from Amazon America, bloody brilliant if you can't sleep.

MammaSchwifty · 27/01/2019 22:26

Love the stuff, and miss it so much since I've been pregnant/breastfeeding for a couple of years with a couple more to go. Could have really done with a few amazing medically-induced night nurse comas after some horrible colds this year.

Also love the methadone green colour.

For all the fans of NyQuil, at first glance Vicks Medinite seems to have some similarly good shit in it. Acetaminophen = paracetamol, btw.

IDrinkFromTheKegOfGlory · 27/01/2019 22:28

Yep. Took it once when the DC were tiny. My DW had to go into work a couple of hours late the next morning because I literally could not keep my eyes open long enough to be responsible for the kids!

Fififerry1 · 27/01/2019 22:29

I took it when breastfeeding DS1. When he woke for a feed I found it really hard to wake and became very very agitated and frustrated with him. It was very frightening and I have never taken it again. I also warn people against it because my reaction was so extreme. I am normally very resistant to the effects of medication. So no - i don’t think it was a bonkers thread.

AriadneCrete · 27/01/2019 22:34

Night Nurse does absolutely nothing for me, but NyQuil (American Night Nurse) is amazing. I stock up every time I’m in America or Canada and get people to bring it back for me.

tinyradish · 27/01/2019 22:36

Haven't had it for years but it did used to knock me out & make me useless the next day - like I was still half asleep, couldn't concentrate, think or function properly.

So no, I don't think people are exaggerating
They just react to it differently than you do.

GB54 · 27/01/2019 22:37

I’ve only used it once when I had the flu. Relieved all my body ache and I just slept for about 2 days. Was probably the best I’ve ever slept.

WellTidy · 27/01/2019 22:38

Only took it once, in the 1990s, at university. I had a horrible cold and just wanted rid of it. I took it for three days, I had no memory of anything that happened in that time. I didn’t leave my room in halls, so nothing bad happened, but I was a complete zombie.

Never again.

I wonder about the dose. I was a 5 foot 21 year old, weighed 7 stone (those were the days). Maybe the dose was too strong?

Lindtnotlint · 27/01/2019 22:38

People definitely react differently. For me it is just useful for stopping worst of symptoms. For DH it is like he has taken serious sleeping pills - he would never take it if in charge of sleeping DCs overnight for example. (I totally would.)

Must be some sort of difference in susceptibility to the sleeping drugs...

Josiebloggs · 27/01/2019 22:41

Night nurse is wonderful stuff. At least half the shift workers I know use it as a sleeping aid. It can make you feel awful the next day if you get woken up, if you wake naturally it isn't too bad.

LizzieSiddal · 27/01/2019 22:41

Bloody hell it knocks me out, it’s the only good thing about having a cold

It also knocks out Dh whose 6ft 2 and built like a rugby player. 😂

Fluffyears · 27/01/2019 22:42

I have taken it a few times years ago (the capsules so you don’t drink the awful stuff). I slept in twice for work and another time was a Saturday, I slept from midnight until 3pmthe next day. Haven’t tried it since in case I need to get up for work.

greenelephantscarf · 27/01/2019 22:42

I'm fine with nn.
makes me nicely sleepy but am functioning great the next day.
dh on the other hand sleeps for 20 hours solid and wakes up grumpy and with a headache.
