My best was definitely Canada. Driving through the Rockies was an unforgettable experience and we got perfect weather and lots of lovely food and hotel stops along the way.

The worst has to be Dublin. I was really underwhelmed by it and found it crazy expensive.

Alsace was my favourite holiday ever... I've been to all sorts of places, longg and short-haul but that holiday was just perfect...

Worst was a stop off in Blackpool that DH the fool insisted on. Horrid.

cuppycakey · 26/01/2019 17:25

It's true Grey - that is how I felt. I got followed around by odd men in Japan. In Kenya everyone was so lovely Smile

pepy123 · 26/01/2019 17:26

Not really had a bad one over here or abroad. But i study hard where im going and only pick ones i think suitable for us and that ' feel right'. Best though are: Iceland, Disneyland , Rome and the Lake District.
My idea of hell though would be anywhere with a crowded beach and nothing but bars and restaurants and built up.

Buntybearbess · 26/01/2019 17:27

Best was Menorca Cala Grande when I was 11, haven't really had a bad holiday tbh.

yearinyearout · 26/01/2019 17:27

Best...safari in Kenya. Unforgettable. Worst was a hen do in Fuengirola. It was in September but was raining and windy the whole time and loads of places were closed. Couldn't even use the pool at the villa so most of us made the most of the time away from the DC to spend whole afternoons in bed (so it wasn't that bad)

Prosaic · 26/01/2019 17:34

I started a thread asking for holiday recommendations and so this is very interesting - it seems to all depends on what you want out of a holiday and the circumstances such as the weather, the hotel you end up in etc.

I see Istanbul cops a bit but I think it's an absolutely incredible city - can't say I felt unsafe at any time but I went with a family group so perhaps that made it a bit different. I'm not a fan of Paris, I've been a few times and honestly find it a bit grim. I'm also not a huge fan of Bali, but I love Malaysia though.

FuckBrussel · 26/01/2019 17:42

Best - most of them, some in tents carried on the back of a motorbike, some in our little motorhome, including Mull, Harris, Lewis, the Uists, Orkney, Shetland, Kintyre...

Worst - two weeks with the inlaws in Menorca. It wasn't really Menorca's fault (although my then very small DS did dig down on the beach and tap into a thick seam of sewage), but the hotel owner had died shortly before our holiday and his wife had decided she could carry on alone. The staff were grumpy and unhelpful, and the food was diabolical - I had garlic soup one lunchtime which is supposed to be poured boiling hot over a raw egg so that the egg is cooked. I didn't realise it hadn't been hot enough until I got to the bottom of the bowl and came up with a spoonful of snotty white and raw yolk. We were all thoroughly pissed off with each other by the end of the holiday.

MotherOfDragons90 · 26/01/2019 17:52

Worst - Rome, didn’t like it at all. It felt dusty and lots of the attractions were being refurbished and had scaffolding around them. Mental crowds too.

Best - New York is absolutely amazing. Also going to go against the grain because I had a brilliant holiday in Kalkan, Turkey which is absolutely stunning. Also love my family apartment in Spain which is touristy as ‘ell but fab for when you want a bit of cheap sun and cocktails Grin

Passthebubbly · 26/01/2019 17:53

Best Thailand worst Tunisia

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 26/01/2019 17:56

Prosaic, I was with a couple of women friends in Istanbul and we were all harassed to an astounding degree. It got so that I started to psyche myself up every time that I went outside, and play through strategies in my head to try and avoid being grabbed. I got flashed at a couple of times as well - I mean, proper dick out having a pull nonsense, and of course when you're in a strange country you feel that bit more of a target anyway. It really had a massive impact on the trip.

AuntieOxident · 26/01/2019 18:02

I love Hong Kong, it’s so vibrant, bustling and a real working city. Great food and shopping, amazing (sometimes smelly but the real deal) street markets.
You needn’t necessarily bother with The Peak (crowded and full of tat) but the views are spectacular and if you can cope with the touts in Kowloon (Copy handbag, madam? real Versace copy?) it has wonderful colour and life.
It might be a bit of a culture shock for some but amidst all the noise and bustle it still feels safe.
I love Tokyo too, utterly foreign but oddly familiar, wonderful and completely safe, clean and ordered. Incredible food but not cheap. Although it wasn’t as expensive as I thought it would be.
We had a slightly edgy holiday in Tunis, had the feeling we were ripped off a lot but the 5* hotel on the beach was wonderful. Wouldn’t go again though....
Florida was unmatched for family holidays when DC were young.
I have been going to Cornwall , a particular place on the coast, for many years and love it. I wouldn’t go in the school holidays and nor is it that great for older teenagers, who probably just want to go to Rock.....

PenguinPandas · 26/01/2019 18:02

Best - Australia - Great Barrier Reef, rainforest, stayed at place with lady who rescues injured tree kangaroos, possums and pademelon, and lots of other wildlife, cuddling a koala, Sydney Harbour Bridge and boat trip seeing lots of whales and dolphins and saw crocodiles on boat trip. Also loved Costa Rica, Lapland in summer and winter and Cape Town.

Worst - Trip to MILs timeshare in Nice where Easyjet lost my suitcase then got food poisoning and a presumably Le Pen supporter "congratulated" me on being English. Lake Como was quite dull but maybe as we flew there with Shearings and were 50 years too young Grin Interesting was Rio where you could hear a man on next table trying to buy prostitutes and we could hear someone being shot when sat outside then waiter said that's normal its Saturday though loved most of that trip. As a child a very boring trip to Normandy.

HenweeArcher · 26/01/2019 18:04

Best:
Malaysia - everyone was incredibly friendly, the beaches were stunning, so much to see and do!
Gran Canaria - the coast is an absolute hellhole, I can’t stress enough how terrible it is BUT I would go back and hike in the mountains again in a heartbeat.
Cozumel (Mexico) - just for the coral reef.

Worst:
The Philippines - I found the poverty next to luxury juxtaposition (think massive shopping malls next to kids with no shoes on in shanty towns) really stressful. It wasn’t actually a holiday as such and where I was staying was quite dull. Boracai was pretty.
The Gambia - amazing wildlife, loads to explore up river and the people were incredible but the political regime at the time was unpleasant to say the least and it was unnerving having to travel with bribes on hand. I’d consider going back now though.

80sMum · 26/01/2019 18:10

The worst was St Lucia.

It's difficult to choose a best one. I'm very fond of Madeira, Lanzarote, Andelucia and Crete. But if really pushed to pick one place I would say my best holiday was in the USA.

tiggerkid · 26/01/2019 18:19

I liked all my holidays except the following:

  • a weekend trip to Athens - was a disappointing waste of time
  • Cornwall - boring, overpriced and very much overrated
  • a day in Great Yarmouth - drove by on colleague's recommendation, spent a day there, which I will never get back - totally beats both of the above in terms of major disappointments
Amanduh · 26/01/2019 18:20

Best: NZ, Spain, Greece, Jamaica
Worst: LA, Thailand, Centre Parcs

LoniceraJaponica · 26/01/2019 18:24

I agree with the many posters about Tunisia. The hassle as soon as we left the hotel, the cockroaches, the leering men and the smell (We stayed in Sousse). It was also a crap hotel with terrible food.

Best holidays: Lake Garda, Sicily, Croatia, Lapland, Hong Kong and Indonesia, California, New England, Shropshire, Devon, North Norfolk, Lisbon, Bruges, Rome.

Hushnownobodycares · 26/01/2019 18:24

Best: Portugal, Menorca

Worst: Turkey,Tunisia

BejamNostalgia · 26/01/2019 18:28

Berlin and Vienna best cities
Jandia Fuerteventura best beach
New Forest best UK

L.A. worst city, boring, no culture. Full of people who pretend to be right on but are actually really racist and sexist
Worst beach - Sidari in Corfu. Dirty, a mess, full of awful people, some of whom almost caused a forest fire through arson at a beauty spot
Worst UK - Cornwall - tourist areas full of dreadful snobby second homers or transplanted Londoners and their braying hooray offspring while actually Cornish people are terribly deprived.

WhyTheLongFace · 26/01/2019 18:34

Best -
anywhere in Greece. Particularly smaller islands.
Worst. -
Yorkshire - sorry, it’s cold and it rained a lot.
And All Inclusive in Sharm with mini disco and animation team and shit food and noise all the time.

Jsmith99 · 26/01/2019 18:37

Best - South Africa, no contest. An extraordinary country with everything you could possibly want in a holiday destination and much more besides.

Worst - we haven’t had a really bad holiday, because we plan carefully and avoid obviously grotty places but a package holiday in a resort hotel in Paphos, Cyprus was disappointing. There was nothing particularly wrong with thenplace but it was just too ‘Brits abroad’ for us.

Housingcraze · 26/01/2019 18:39

Norway/ Barbados/ Sri Lanka / Colorado (tornados)

Worst St Lucia I was ill dry heat!

feellikeanalien · 26/01/2019 18:39

I can see why a couple of PPs have mentioned Gibraltar. I can imagine if you went there from the UK it would seem like a bit of a shit hole. However we used to live in Portugal and would go to Gibraltar for the weekend.

Sad I know but I used to love going to M&S and shopping in Safeway. I also used to like the multicultural feel. Ironically our favourite restaurant there was Spanish! There was also so much history.

Best holiday was a toss-up between visiting family in the US when I was 14 and a three week driving holiday in Spain. There were so many interesting places to see and the contrast between the different regions was amazing.

Worst had to be on the Spanish trip when we took a day trip to Morocco. The day we went was the one day the ferry didn't go to Tangier and we ended up in some dive in the middle of nowhere. It was smelly, we were constantly harassed and some of the poverty was really disturbing. We felt very uncomfortable and it put me off ever going to Morocco again.

exLtEveDallas · 26/01/2019 18:40

Best, Mexico. We went to Playa del Carmen Riviera Maya and had an amazing time. Hotel was fabulous, the town was amazing and the history, the monuments, the ceynotes, the Eco parks.... Oh I so wish we could afford to go back!

Worst, Majorca the year after. What a fucking mistake that was. Complete dive of a hotel, the weather was shite, the beach full of rubbish and the food worse than a school canteen.

Have had a couple of near misses since (Majorca again and Morocco) but thankfully even at places with questionable food or not so great accn there has always been something fab to compensate.

Crunchymum · 26/01/2019 18:41

Best were Cuba, Kefalonia and Las Vegas (I was surprised as I expected to hate it but we did loads of non Vegas-y stuff as well.... I did enjoy the Vegas stuff though!!)

Worst were Margarita, Kos and Majorca.
