Best and worst place you have been on holiday to?!

My best was definitely Canada. Driving through the Rockies was an unforgettable experience and we got perfect weather and lots of lovely food and hotel stops along the way.

The worst has to be Dublin. I was really underwhelmed by it and found it crazy expensive.

One if our best holidays was North Devon. The weather was glorious and the kids just the right age to enjoy the pool and beach and skimming stones as well as sight seeing.

Frosty66611 · 30/01/2019 12:44

@drmadeleinemaxwell my partner grew up in north Devon and looks like he had the most idyllic childhood from the photos I’ve seen.

The best British holidays I’ve had have been in Dorset or Arran, and the worst have been in Blackpool

@MsTSwift I took my blonde 4 yo twins and 7 yo dd1 to Paris and people (middle class women and men) kept touching their heads/hair. I loved it with dh in 2002 but in 2014 I hated it. I felt unsafe and people seemed angry. I'm a city person so not usually anxious in places but I was glad to get my dc away from Paris (although I hid this from them).

OhTheRoses · 30/01/2019 23:33

Worst- Bempton. Miserable place; vile cottage. DH had to take his son to Yorkshire for his first holiday.

Best - Languedoc, foothills of the Pyrenees. So best we bought it and it's now our second home.

Second best has to be Fowey. Wonderful place where we had three wonderful summers. Cornwall in anything but boring.

MsTSwift · 31/01/2019 07:30

That said dh and I were mugged on the metro but fought off a group of gang member men who surrounded us and tried to take my bag. It’s actually one of our proudest moments

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 31/01/2019 07:41

For me the best have been Turkey, Istanbul, Cesme, Ordu, Kas, Urgup and Canakkale

Then Cape Town

Worst - Lloret in Spain, was vile

cricketmum84 · 31/01/2019 07:44

I love Benidorm (shhhhh 😂)

Perfect holiday destination in the old town if you fancy a cheap, hot, fairly close holiday. Kids love all the tribute acts on a night, the beach is gorgeous when it's not so packed and you are never stuck for somewhere to eat whether you fancy fish and chips or tapas!

user1479305498 · 31/01/2019 13:50

If I can mention I loveBenidorm too. My grandparents lived outside in Altea for 10 years. Thing is if you stay close to the old town (not up the ‘english End’ it’s a nice bReak with lots to do , great tapas bars, a sensationally good beach and superb for teens in my opinion. It has proper shops, nice marina and the train to more upmarket places like Altea 10 minutes away. Go in April, may, June or Sept, October. If I can recommend the Intimate Bar in the old town, great tiny old fashioned karaoke bar run by two Liverpudlian ‘queens’ . I took my son for his 18th , he thought he would hate it, thoroughly enjoyed it!! And I have been to tons of upmarket places too so it’s not as if I don’t have other places to compare it with. Sometimes a bit of brash fun and a fab beach and great weather can be just the ticket. It’s also very cheap !

Cesme

Happy dance! Cesme itself it beautiful, sadly the hotel we stayed was a dump. The bus journey from Izmir to Cesme was long, and hot. 44C. We were young and we certainly wouldn't have gone (DD was very young) had we realised. Remember a man stopping us outside the airport and literally throwing many bottles of water at us. So happy he did.

DD , and I, required medical attention whilst there which was amazing.

AFAIK, and not looked at going to Turkey in the subsequent years, Cesme isn't somewhere any of the UK package holiday companies service anymore either.

DP is hankering to go back to the country next year. So far I've been extremely against it.

Zoflorabore · 01/02/2019 05:47

Steve- I've been to Turkey for the last few years, first time ever was 2016 and only because it was a present for ds's 13th birthday. He is obsessed with water parks and had wanted to go to this particular hotel ( Aqua Fantasy hotel and spa ) and we were hooked on the place. Been back to same hotel each time ( fly into Izmir ) and hoping to go again this year. Amazing place :)

redyawn · 01/02/2019 05:59

Best..... Guatemala, Greek islands, Berlin, Lucerne in Switzerland

Worst.... Aviemore in Scotland (it rained nearly all day every day on a two-week holiday in August)

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 01/02/2019 06:03

Best: Bolzano in South Tyrol. Stunning scenery, great food and a fabulous hotel. Wonderful well maintained hiking paths. Been back twice.

Worst: a family holiday in Skye, staying in a caravan. Skye is beautiful but the caravan was dirty, damp and full of spiders, and it poured for two weeks.

SimplySteve · 01/02/2019 07:32

Thanks @Zoflorabore shall give DP the hotel name Smile

madeyemoodysmum · 01/02/2019 07:37

Ireland for worst. Expensive. Dog crap all over beaches Wasps everywhere
No child friendly eateries. Awful.

Prob Florida for best but I’ve been to lots of fab places
Maldives Slovenia Croatia I love the uk too.

madeyemoodysmum · 01/02/2019 07:39

Regina phelange. Why Malta? I’ve been and liked it so why put you off. Just curious

I love Slovenia too.

caperplips · 01/02/2019 14:05

Madeye where exactly were you in Ireland?

evaperonspoodle · 01/02/2019 16:50

Ireland is very expensive but all of the beaches I've been to (we've done most of the WAW and east coast) have been super clean.

madeyemoodysmum · 01/02/2019 22:57

Somewhere near cork

CandleWithHair · 01/02/2019 23:16

Loving the love for beautiful Cesme! But shhh, lets keep it a secret eh? Wink

User5436477 · 01/02/2019 23:55

I love Paris. Also love Hong Kong, Sardinia, Anglesey, most places I’ve been tbh.

Didn’t like Egypt, Miami or Dublin.

Lilyhatesjaz · 02/02/2019 00:30

I loved Amsterdam went to the museums, zoo and botanic gardens. Didn't go to the red light district or out at night.
I love Cornwall and North Devon woolacombe has a lovely beach.
I liked Malta when I went on honeymoon but that was 20 years ago so maybe it has changed. Rhodes and Corfu I also enjoyed in the 1980s.
I like the Lake District I have been lucky with the weather there.
Loved Scotland but hadn't realised how far things were from each other and had booked one place for the week, another time I would stay in different places.
Worst holidays
Torquay a bit grotty., Bognor Regis a lot grotty.
I stayed on Anglesey for a school field trip once and I never wanted to go back.

givemesteel · 02/02/2019 00:59

Best - New Zealand, especially south island. There's loads of other places I've loved too.

Worst - Egypt, I'd like to see the pyramids but its not worth going back to that dump for. And I'd never go with my DDs, I wouldn't expose them to that level of misogyny.

Tunisia comes a close second.

Mistigri · 02/02/2019 08:16

Best:

  • Seville (don't go in summer though!)
  • S Africa especially the Cape
  • West coast of Ireland (coast north of Galway), NI was great too
  • I love Japan though never been on holiday there (only work), am planning a trip with my DD

Worst - none really though I always find UK breaks disappointing (everything so expensive and busy)
