Best and worst place you have been on holiday to?!

My best was definitely Canada. Driving through the Rockies was an unforgettable experience and we got perfect weather and lots of lovely food and hotel stops along the way.

The worst has to be Dublin. I was really underwhelmed by it and found it crazy expensive.

Best, too many but mostly every single visit to Japan, then Germany

Worst, Malta, Malta did I say Malta, hateful place (1986)

whiteroseredrose · 26/01/2019 15:30

Best - Northumberland coast, Mull, North Wales, Loire Valley. Lots to do in all. Oh and our one-off biggie, California

Worst - Didn't like Dubai or Vegas. Just sand and hotels. Yawn.

Badbadbunny · 26/01/2019 15:30

Worst - Kenya, never felt safe in the entire 2 weeks - seriously fearing for my life anywhere outside the hotel which had it's own armed guards on the beach and entrance. Awful food. I counted the days till the flight home.

Best - Malta, but it was my first foreign holiday so maybe rose coloured glasses! Friendly people, lovely towns, nice beaches, brand new hotel, really sad to leave.

Frosty66611 · 26/01/2019 15:30

Also another worst of mine was Benidorm. Totally not my kind of place at all and I got the worst food poisoning ever and almost died.

oh can I add another worst (but still not as bad as Malta)

Fuerteventura, why did I agree....

Madbengalmum · 26/01/2019 15:30

Looks Like I will continue to avoid Tunisia and Turkey!

whiteroseredrose · 26/01/2019 15:30

Yeah. Didn't like Dublin much either.

blue25 · 26/01/2019 15:32

UAE (Abu Dhabi) was also awful. Would rather stay at home.

Beerflavourednipples · 26/01/2019 15:32

I've never been on a 'shit' holiday.

However, I was quite 'meh' about Geneva (boring and unfriendly) and Fiji, and I also think Dublin is kind of overrated, Galway is miles better.

Well, to be fair to Malta, I was exhausted and all I really wanted from the week was a sunny place to sit outside, sleep, read books, and eat nice food. It is not Malta's fault that I lost my kindle on the way from the airport to the hotel. Or that the weather was terrible that week - not too cold, but grey, rainy and VERY windy. There was one sunny day all week.

It is Malta's fault that the places I tried to visit were often closed despite what it said on their website and that the food was mostly uninspiring at best (I had one really good meal all week). I also didn't like the Brits Abroad atmosphere in a lot of places. I know there is a strong historical link with Malta still, and it's fun seeing old British phone boxes and things. It just felt a bit more like the Costa del Sol than I was expecting.

I've much preferred the Italian and Greek Mediterranean islands that I've visited.

Best, Lombok in Indonesia
Worst, Rhodes. There was a heatwave and our apartment had no air conditioning, plus was infested by ants. There was a lovely butterfly valley but everything else was hot and dusty and rocky.
I do love Cornwall though. And I had a lovely holiday in Tunisia.

bridgetreilly · 26/01/2019 15:35

I only had a couple of days in Geneva but I really liked it. I mean, except for paying £10 for a cup of tea. If I could afford it, I'd definitely go back, but it is VERY expensive.

CarolDanvers · 26/01/2019 15:36

Best - the gulf coast in Florida. Just utterly stunning and mile upon mile of white empty sandy beaches with pelicans swooping around.

Worst - Thailand. Dirty and sordid in lots of places and the people seemed to actually hate us and just want to take the piss financially. I understand why but it didn't mean I had to enjoy it.

Clionba · 26/01/2019 15:36

Worst : Turkey. Horrible locals, the men were virtually constantly sexually harassing.
Best : Iceland. Interesting, great people.

DarlingNikita · 26/01/2019 15:37

Worst probably Oslo. Only went for a weekend, to go to a wedding. Wedding was on a tiny island and utterly charming, but we had an evening and a whole day to fill and it was DULL. Quite shit weather considering it was June; loads of shops and cafes were closed; terrible music festival going on replete with 80s-throwback metal bands and unironic mullets; and the place is OFFENSIVELY expensive.
Also Marrakesh. Too much hawking and hustling. Not very friendly people and riad staff were unhelpful and a bit sullen. The main square was underwhelming. Not much to enjoy about the place – no particularly nice bits to walk around or people-watch in. Very underwhelming. I love Essaouira though.

Best: hard to choose. South India was intoxicating. Madrid for the wonderful food, quirky bookshops, the Prado and Reine Sofia and friendly, sociable outdoor culture. Shetland and Venice for beauty. St Ives for the Barbara Hepworth garden. Lisbon is quite unbelievably picturesque with the tiled houses and all the lovely views. I could go on...

Ninoo25 · 26/01/2019 15:38

Best ever Cornwall, worst ever also Cornwall. Staying somewhere with lots of free kids activities really made the difference to us!

WeeBean · 26/01/2019 15:39

@Frosty66611 oh you won't regret it! Easily the most beautiful place I've ever seen! I would say a couple of days there is maybe enough though, we did a day trip from Ljubljana. Definitely recommend taking time to see around Slovenia a bit if you have time, Postojna caves were brilliant too and we found it so easy to get around the country by train.

KeptTheBeachesShipwreckFree · 26/01/2019 15:39

We went to St. Ives in Cornwall. Cornwall itself was lovely and we enjoyed visiting as many EH/NT places as we could as well as eating out and sight seeing. The place where we stayed though was awful - kind of like a poor man's version of Centre Parks but the chalets were old, dirty, damp and smelly with mould growing in the windows. We felt we had no choice but to visit as many places as possible in order to stay out of the cabin for as long as possible. We couldn't go elsewhere and we couldn't just go home - my mum paid for all of us to stay there and we live an 8 hours' drive away!

Aridane · 26/01/2019 15:40

Never had a bad holiday or a place I didn't enjoy!

Clionba · 26/01/2019 15:41

I recommend that you don't go to Poland if you are ethnic minority or travelling with someone non white. Seriously.

HildaZelda · 26/01/2019 15:42

I'll have to think about best, but can definitely say worst is Lanzarote. I absolutely hated it.
Not mad on Dublin either. I have family in Ireland so have been there quite a bit. There are much nicer places in Ireland. County Kerry is stunning. Beautiful scenery and very friendly people.

Unihorn · 26/01/2019 15:45

I love these threads because they end up sounding like awful TripAdvisor reviews: Paris is just museums, Ben Nevis is just a big hill, there's too many people in London etc. Grin

BestIsWest · 26/01/2019 15:46

The Rockies for me too. Adored it so much, I’m going back.

Also loved Hay on Wye, and Cascais on Portugal.

Did not like Barmouth or Croatia ( though it was stunning)

cptartapp · 26/01/2019 15:46

Best: Iceland and the Maldives, then Copenhagen, Mauritius, St Lucia.
Not keen on Dublin either!

BathshebaAndGabriel · 26/01/2019 15:46

Worst- Dublin. Bugger all to do, expensive and pretentious.

Best- Israel. Eilat cheesy fun. Jerusalem otherworldly.
