Best and worst place you have been on holiday to?!

My best was definitely Canada. Driving through the Rockies was an unforgettable experience and we got perfect weather and lots of lovely food and hotel stops along the way.

The worst has to be Dublin. I was really underwhelmed by it and found it crazy expensive.

Best - Vancouver, driving over the rockies, Niagra Falls, China
Worst - Ottawa (closed) and New York (dirty, scary)

RedPandaMama · 26/01/2019 16:12

Best - Lapland. Nearly 20 years ago and still remember it like it was yesterday. I was only 6 when I went and it was amazing!
Also Disneyland Florida and Prague are both phenomenal places.

Worst - Amsterdam. So busy, so many times I almost got ran over by a bike. Twice I was grabbed in different areas, once dragged into an alley, by African men who tried to sell me drugs 'cocaine ecstasy for the pretty lady' Confused. Hated the red light district. Being 19 I thought it would have been a funny and interesting experience. I found it scary and disgusting, and I'm the least prudish person in the world. Drunk old men leering at these poor women who looked desperately unhappy and bored in the windows. Guys getting beaten up
for taking photos. Had a space cake that was a dud and spent all my money in 24 hours because it was WAY more expensive than I thought.

The best was Greece, and have been many times.

The worst, hands down, was Tunisia. What a horrible place that was. We couldn't have felt more uneasy, unwelcome or looked down on when we left the hotel (the hotel and staff were fantastic though, really lovely). And it's not just xenophobia, I've been all over the world and this place was 'off'.

todayiwin · 26/01/2019 16:15

Gibraltar. Worst place in the entire world. Was there 24hrs for a connecting flight. Horrific.

UnreasonablyPissedOff · 26/01/2019 16:15

Pinky don't scratch Dublin off your list. I always read these threads where Dublin gets slated with surprise. I don't live in Dublin but visit oit several times a year as have family not too far from there and we LOVE it. It is a charming, historical place and I honestly don't know where posters are visiting in Dublin when they say they had nothing to do and couldn't find nice food Hmm

If you would like any recommendations at any stage I would me more than happy to help

Best is definitely camping in the north west of Australia, closely followed by camping in the south west of Australia.
Worst- despite the fact I’m a miserable shit in most aspects of life I can’t actually think of any holiday that I can call the ‘worst’, even holidays when I’ve ended up in shitty hotels have been great fun.
That said I wouldn’t rush back to Sydney but that’s because every time I go something shit happens to me rather than it not being a cool place to visit.

SirGawain · 26/01/2019 16:15

Gibraltar. I’d pay the Spanish to take it off our hands!

YoThePussy · 26/01/2019 16:15

I must be easily pleased as don’t have a worst although would say St Lucia of the Caribbean islands I have visited was not up to much.

Love, Antigua and Greneda of the Caribbean islands, Greece and the islands, Italy especially Venice, Canada and The Rockies. Nearer home The Burren in Ireland, Cornwall for all the childhood holidays there, Gower in South Wales.

Frosty66611 · 26/01/2019 16:18

@yothepussy what didn’t you like about St Lucia? I’ve never been but my DP an I were hoping to go at the end of the year. The other option is Antigua but the hotels don’t seem quite as nice. Thanks

Best - Japan
Worst - Mallorca, but weather wasn't as nice as it should have been, or it would have been fun I am sure!

winsinbin · 26/01/2019 16:19

Worst has got to be Dublin. We have a lot of family in the Dublin area and so we pass through often. I have had some good times in the city but on the whole it is the most boring and overpriced place I have ever been. And the Guinness Storehouse is the most boring and overpriced thing of all.

Best is harder to pick. Probably another Irish one, a holiday before DH and I got married maybe when we drove from Wexford to Donegal using a very circuitous route and stayed at many lovely places on the way.

Jaxhog · 26/01/2019 16:20

More:

Best - Venice outside the main tourist season, Vienna at Christmas, Barcelona in the day time (the Gaudi stuff is fab), Florida (mainly the beaches and Disney World).

Worst - Paris (rudest people I've ever met), Barcelona at night (we got mugged on our second to last night and the police didn't give a shit), Florida (Miami airport and key west - dirty and over priced)

MsTSwift · 26/01/2019 16:21

Egypt. Cairo is a hellhole we were two twenty somethings and the sexual harassment was constant. We ended up reading in our hotel room waiting for the flight home. Dharamasla in India was crap too. Rainy, dull, cold. Like a worse version of wales. Everywhere else I’ve been has been great.

Lovemusic33 · 26/01/2019 16:22

Feel kind of sad that people don’t like Cornwall and Dorset, both are my favourite places but last year we went to Cornwall during the school holidays and it was awful due to how busy it was, both places are great if you go during term time.

Worst place for me was Nort Wales, everything looked grey and dirty and it rained all week, the mountains were pretty.

Favourite is probably Barcelona though I went before I had kids so got to enjoy the night life.

Jaxhog · 26/01/2019 16:22

And I agree about Tunisia. Morocco isn't much better.

Frosty66611 · 26/01/2019 16:23

@Lovemusic I agree about Dorset. It’s my favourite part of the country for a U.K break. I especially love the harbour resort or West Bay there

Scilly Isles are pretty nice too. Like Cornwall only much, much better and less crowded. Pig of a place to get to though.

jenthelibrarian · 26/01/2019 16:24

Best: NYC, Chicago, Stockholm
Worst: Scotland. Either cold and wet or eaten alive by midges. Edinburgh is dull, grey and filthy, puke on the pavements, got told to fuck off by a disgusting drunk.

HazelBite · 26/01/2019 16:24

Best, New York in December, Italian Lakes, and the Highlands of Scotland.
Worst, North Devon and Corwall.

Frosty66611 · 26/01/2019 16:24

Have any of you been to Edinburgh? I grew up there and think it’s the best city ever. My friends (not from there) who have visited all hated it though which always surprises me so much

OP posts:
Clionba · 26/01/2019 16:24

I love Dorset and Cornwall!! Had fantastic, relaxing times off the beaten track.
Agree about Tunisia and Morocco - shudder.

Jaxhog · 26/01/2019 16:25

Kenya wasn't too great either. Lovely countryside and safaris, but the western hotels are in compounds (with armed guards) and the beach full of aggressive touts. Felt very unsafe.

nutellalove · 26/01/2019 16:26

Best - really hard to decide. New York is probably Up there and Thailand.

Worst - Hong Kong. Really wasn't what I was expecting. People were very rude, super expensive and tbh not that much to do

DonCorleoneTheThird · 26/01/2019 16:26

Let's face it the time of year, the quality of your accommodation and your expectations play a huge part on your opinion. I have had amazing holidays in some of the "worst" places listed above!

I would never book a camping holiday in this country, the chances of rain spoiling it would be too high - also I hate camping Grin

Imsosorryalan1 · 26/01/2019 16:27

Best - Canada, Goa, Lake Garda and Bruges

Worst - Barcelona, Gran Canaria, Tunisia
